Initial evaluation of photographic data of F- and H-Area seepage basin outcrops

Description: Photographic data for the Savannah River Plant (SRP) were reviewed for 1961 through 1987 to determine the value of this photography in estimating the timing and extent of the F- and H-Area seepage basin outcrops along the upper Four Mile Creek floodplain. In excess of 15,000 frames of photography of the SRP were reviewed. The quality of the photography varied widely and included panchromatic (black and white), natural color, and false color infrared. Altitudes of the photography ranged from 2,0… more

Standardization guide for construction and use of MORT-type analytic trees

Description: Since the introduction of MORT (Management Oversight and Risk Tree) technology as a tool for evaluating the success or failure of safety management systems, there has been a proliferation of analytic trees throughout US Department of Energy (DOE) and its contractor organizations. Standard fault tree'' symbols have generally been used in logic diagram or tree construction, but new or revised symbols have also been adopted by various analysts. Analysis of the role of an interfacility SNM accounting system

Description: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) undertook the task of analyzing the actual and potential value of an interfacility NRC material accounting system in deterring and detecting both material diversion and facility material accounting data falsification. The most important conclusion is that only relatively minor changes are needed to upgrade the current NRC interfacility reporting system. The emphasis of the task was on evaluating the usefulness of an NRC-monitored material accounting… more

Measured energy savings and economics of retrofitting existing single-family homes: An update of the BECA-B database

Description: The energy bill for US single-family households was over $77 billion in 1987 (excluding auto fuel purchases), accounting for approximately 20% of national energy expenditures. Large sums are spent on residential retrofits by individual homeowners, government agencies, and utilities. As of late 1987, over 21 million households indicated that they had added at least one energy-saving measure in the previous two years, while a recent Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) study estimated that ne… more

Feasibility study: fuel cell cogeneration in a water pollution control facility. Final report

Description: A conceptual design study was conducted to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of a cogeneration fuel cell power plant operating in a large water pollution control facility. In this particular application, the fuel cell power plant would use methane-rich digester gas from the water pollution control facility as a fuel feedstock to provide electrical and thermal energy. Several design configurations were evaluated. These configurations were comprised of combinations of options for… more

Development of mild gasification process

Description: Under a previous contract with Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC), Department of Energy (DOE) Contract No. DE-AC21-84MC21108, UCC Research Corporation (UCCRC) built and tested a 1500 lb/day Mild Gasification Process Development Unit (MGU). The MGU, as tested under the previous contract, is shown in Figure 1. Testing completed under the previous contract showed that good quality hydrocarbon liquids and good quality char can be produced in the MGU. However, the MGU is not optimized. The p… more

Multielement geochemistry of solid materials in geothermal systems and its applications. Part 1. Hot-water system at the Roosevelt Hot Springs KGRA, Utah

Description: Geochemical studies of the geothermal system at Roosevelt Hot Springs, Utah, have led to development of chemical criteria for recognition of major features of the system and to a three-dimensional model for chemical zoning in the system. Based on this improved level of understanding several new or modified geochemical exploration and assessment techniques have been defined and are probably broadly applicable to evaluation of hot-water geothermal systems. The main purpose of this work was the de… more

Seismic refraction survey of the ANS preferred site

Description: Between September 19, 1991 and October 8, 1991 personnel from Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc. (Energy Systems), Automated Sciences Group, Inc., and Marrich, Inc. performed a seismic refraction survey at the Advanced Neutron Source (ANS) preferred site. The purpose of this survey was to provide estimates of top-of-rock topography, based on seismic velocities, and to delineate variations in rock and soil velocities. Forty-four seismic refraction spreads were shot to determine top-of-rock dep… more

Investigation and evaluation of geopressured-geothermal wells. Package No. 1 of wells-of-opportunity candidates

Description: This group of wells-of-opportunity (WOO) consists of six candidates; one in Texas and five in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. Of the latter, two of three candidates are considered to be mutually exclusive in that each exhibits good potential for testing geopressured-geothermal aquifers which are indicated to be of sufficient volume for purposes of a 30-day test. A final selection of one location may be made from these three wells, assuming all pass screening criteria, based on estimated cost of the … more

Determining the optical quality of focusing collectors without laser ray tracing

Description: This paper describes a novel alternative to the laser ray trace technique for evaluating the optical quality of focusing solar collectors. The new method does not require any equipment beyond what is used for measuring collector efficiency; it could therefore become part of routine collector testing. The total optical errors resulting from imperfect specularity and from inaccuracies in reflector position or slope are characterized by an angular standard deviation sigma/sub optical/, the rms dev… more
