COMP: a BASIC language nonlinear least-squares curve fitting program

Description: COMP is an interactive nonlinear least squares routine written in BASIC language and used to obtain estimates of parameters in nonlinear functions and to approximate their associated statistical errors. The program uses the linearizing (or Taylor Series) expansion of partial derivatives outlined in Draper and Smith, (1966, pp. 267 to 270). Therefore, partial derivatives must be supplied (as well as the function) by the user for any new models not currently contained in the programs. When a line… more

Non-linear instability of DIII-D to error fields

Description: Otherwise stable DIII-D discharges can become nonlinearly unstable to locked modes and disrupt when subjected to resonant m = 2, n = 1 error field caused by irregular poloidal field coils, i.e. intrinsic field errors. Instability is observed in DIII-D when the magnitude of the radial component of the m = 2, n = 1 error field with respect to the toroidal field is B{sub r21}/B{sub T} of about 1.7 {times} 10{sup {minus}4}. The locked modes triggered by an external error field are aligned with the … more

Performance estimates for personnel access control systems

Description: Current performance estimates for personnel access control systems use estimates of Type I and Type II verification errors. A system performance equation which addresses normal operation, the insider, and outside adversary attack is developed. Examination of this equation reveals the inadequacy of classical Type I and II error evaluations which require detailed knowledge of the adversary threat scenario for each specific installation. Consequently, new performance measures which are consistent … more

Plutonium isotopic analysis of highly enriched mixed oxides

Description: We investigated the analysis method used by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to determine the plutonium isotopic composition of highly enriched mixed oxides (MOX). The IAEA currently uses the Cicero multichannel analyzer and the IAEAPU algorithm for its analysis. In our investigation the plutonium isotopic measurements were found to be good for PuO/sub 2/ powder or low-enriched MOX, but acceptable for highly enriched MOX in IAEA special nuclear material (SNM) accountability applica… more

Performance and development of dE/dx counters

Description: The performance of existing or nearly completed detectors for particle identification by using the relativistic rise of energy loss will be discussed. Detailed analysis of systematic errors leads finally to large detector systems approaching the ultimate resolution as measured in small test devices. New methods for extracting the information from the counter with the potential of better particles separation than standard dE/dx will be presented. It includes very fine sampling, delta-ray clippin… more

Measuring the mass and width of the Z sup 0 : The status of the energy spectrometers

Description: The Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) collides electrons and positrons produced in the linear accelerator pulse by pulse. The object is to produce collisions energetic enough to produce the heavy intermediate vector boson, the Z{sup 0}. An essential component of the SLC physics program is the precise knowledge of the center-of-mass energy of each interaction. We measure the energy of each collision by using two energy spectrometers. The spec… more

Error Analysis of Acceleration Control Loops of a Synchrotron

Description: For beam control during acceleration, it is conventional to derive the frequency from an external reference, be it a field marker or an external oscillator, to provide phase and radius feedback loops to ensure the phase stability, radial position and emittance integrity of the beam. The open and closed loop behaviors of both feedback control and their response under the possible frequency, phase and radius errors are derived from fundamental principles and equations. The stability of the loops … more

Optimal Linfinity estimates for some Galerkin methods for the Dirichlet problem

Description: Optimal L/sup infinity/ error estimates are established for a few different finite-element-type methods for the Dirichlet problem in a bounded domain. The methods are selected so as to avoid the necessity of imposing boundary conditions on the trial functions, usually difficult in practice. Three specific methods are treated. These are the method of interpolated boundary conditions and two methods of Nitsche. The trial spaces, S/sup h/, consist of continuous piecewise polynomials of degree less… more

Uncertainty in the power distribution for a fast reactor burnup cycle

Description: Demonstration that advanced reactor designs satisfy safety and performance goals requires the analysis of uncertainties in calculated reactor characteristics. Two of the important performance characteristics of advanced liquid metal reactors (LMR) are the burnup reactivity swing and the local power peaking factor. Previous work reported a study of the uncertainty in the burnup reactivity swing attributable to nuclear data uncertainties for a typical advanced LMR design. The results are reported… more

Theoretical analysis of iron-bore superconducting undulators

Description: The unavoidable undulator field errors due to machining tolerances of the yokes lead to a reduction of the gain in comparison with the case computed with an ideally perfect undulator. We describe a mathematical model of errors in iron-dominated micro-undulators introduced by manufacturing tolerances. Explicit expressions for the perturbation fields are derived. We use these fields to calculate the first, second and phase integrals describing the effects on the electron trajectory. We conclude t… more

Refinements to the Boolean approach to automatic data editing

Description: Automatic data editing consists of three components: identification of erroneous records, identification of most likely erroneous fields within an erroneous record (fields to impute), and assignment of acceptable values to failing records. Moreover the types of data considered naturally fall into three categories: coded (categorical) data, continuous data, and mixed data (both coded and continuous). For the case of coded data, a natural way to approach automatic data is commonly referred to as … more

Sensitivity and uncertainty analysis for functionals of the time-dependent nuclide density field. [ORIGEN-A]

Description: An approach to extend the present ORNL sensitivity program to include functionals of the time-dependent nuclide density field is developed. An adjoint equation for the nuclide field was derived previously by using generalized perturbation theory; the present derivation makes use of a variational principle and results in the same equation. The physical significance of this equation is discussed and compared to that of the time-dependent neutron adjoint equation. Computational requirements for de… more

Treatment of measurement uncertainties at the power burst facility

Description: The treatment of measurement uncertainty at the Power Burst Facility provides a means of improving data integrity as well as meeting standard practice reporting requirements. This is accomplished by performing the uncertainty analysis in two parts, test independent uncertainty analysis and test dependent uncertainty analysis. The test independent uncertainty analysis is performed on instrumentation used repeatedly from one test to the next, and does not have to be repeated for each test except … more

Locked modes and magnetic field errors in MST

Description: In the MST reversed field pinch magnetic oscillations become stationary (locked) in the lab frame as a result of a process involving interactions between the modes, sawteeth, and field errors. Several helical modes become phase locked to each other to form a rotating localized disturbance, the disturbance locks to an impulsive field error generated at a sawtooth crash, the error fields grow monotonically after locking (perhaps due to an unstable interaction between the modes and field error), a… more

Tested method to minimize plutonium assay discrepancies between laboratories

Description: Plutonium assay differences are frequently observed between laboratories exchanging plutonium dioxide powders. These differences are commonly the result of chemical changes and/or nonhomogeneities in sampled materials. The irregularities are often caused by moisture absorption during sampling, packaging, shipment, and storage of the materials. A method is proposed which eliminates the effects of chemical change in samples, particularly moisture absorption, and minimizes sampling error. A nondes… more
