Energy Program annual report

Description: The national economy is particularly dependent on efficient electrical generation and transportation. Electrical demand continues to grow and will increasingly rely on coal and nuclear fuels. The nuclear power industry still has not found a solution to the problem of disposing of the waste produced by nuclear reactors. Polysaccharides and bacterial plugging

Description: Before any successful application of Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery process can be realized, an understanding of the cells' transport and retentive mechanisms in porous media is needed. Cell transport differs from particle transport in their ability to produce polysaccharides, which are used by cells to adhere to surfaces. Cell injection experiments have been conducted using Leuconostoc cells to illustrate the importance of cellular polysaccharide production as a transport mechanism that hinde… more

Massive hydraulic fracturing well, Federal No. 498-4-1, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. Final report

Description: This project is an MHF of a previously untreated Mesaverde interval in a well in northwest Colorado. The rocks involved may have been deposited during a marine invasion of long-continued, swamp environments. If so, they would have possessed superior primary reservoir properties. The logging program, identical to those used in the nearby Rio Blanco Nuclear and MHF Project wells, supplied contradictory information. The frac could furnish better understanding of the log suite, better parameters fo… more

Random choice method for calculating fluid displacement in a porous medium

Description: Multiphase fluid displacement in a porous medium gives rise naturally to the occurrence of steep fronts, for example between different fluids or between regions of differing chemical concentrations. Such fronts pose substantial difficulty for most numerical methods. However, the recently developed random choice numerical method has been found capable of following effectively even perfectly sharp fronts. An application to the calculation of immiscible displacement in a petroleum reservoir is dis… more

Comparative evaluation of surface and downhole steam-generation techniques

Description: It has long been recognized that the application of heat to reservoirs containing high API gravity oils can substantially improve recovery. Although steam injection is currently the principal thermal recovery method, heat transmission losses associated with delivery of the steam from the surface generators to the oil-bearing formation has limited conventional steam injection to shallow reservoirs. The objective of the Department of Energy's Project DEEP STEAM is to develop the technology requir… more
