The Spinning Place

Description: "The Spinning Place" finds its impetus in the intersection of the spiritual and material, and while often dwelling in a domestic milieu, the poems move outward both figuratively and literally. For instance, one poem re-narrates the tale of Rumpelstiltskin, several poems are about divination by various means (frogs, animal behavior), and another performs an erasure of the last supper so that it instead tells a woman's experience in a delivery room. I borrow the title of the collection from a stanza of Dylan Thomas's poem "Fern Hill," and the excerpt (which will become an epigraph to the book) reads: "So it must have been after the birth of the simple light / In the first, spinning place, the spellbound horses walking warm / Out of the whinnying green stable / On to the fields of praise." Thomas refers to the newly created earth as the "spinning place," imagining the fleeting idyll and harmony of that scene. In a similar way, my new poems specifically explore moments of creation, birth, and discovery, drawing from a variety of inspirations, including recognizable narratives and myths, as well as personal experience.

Some Practical Applications of New Language Principles

Description: The purpose of this thesis is to encourage Texas language arts teachers to re-examine the contribution of twentieth century language scholars, not with the thought that any one grammar should be chosen to replace the traditional one now being used but with the notion that the different approaches to grammar are complementary rather than mutually exclusive, and to suggest some specific ways in which major linguistic principles may be reflected in the classroom practices of the high school English teacher.

The Politics of Grading: a Comparative Study of High School English Teachers' Personal Beliefs, Self-reported Systems, and Actual Practices

Description: The purpose of this study was to attain and analyze data regarding high school English teachers' beliefs about grading practices and their self-reported grading practices, to identify and understand disparities that exist between teachers' beliefs and self-reported practices, to identify discrepancies between the same self-reported practices and evidence of the practices actually utilized, and to consider teachers' perceptions as to the causes for these discrepancies. Instrumentation for this study included two surveys with both Likert and Likert-like items and an interview/portfolio analysis of teachers' grading systems. A combined total of 204 high school English-language arts teachers representing thirty-eight states and eighty-five schools comprised the sample. Corresponding pairs of Likert-type items were analyzed using studies of the mode, median, mean rank, and the Mann-Whitney U Test to study a comparison of the medians, and comparisons of true Likert scale item results were completed using studies of the means and an independent samples t-test. Interview/portfolio analysis data were analyzed both descriptively and inferentially including the calculation of 95% confidence intervals for generalizability. All open-ended items were considered qualitatively through a process of identifying and categorizing trends in language and over-arching themes. Results indicate that the sample finds grading practices recommended by experts in the field to be best grading practices, and respondents generally report the use of these same practices in their own grading systems. The data reveal, however, discrepancies between the majority of teachers' reported practices and their actual practices. Study participants are likely to place blame for these discrepancies on these sources: campus or district authorities, the limited time available, and the interferences caused by parents.

Inventions, Dreams, Imitations

Description: Eight short selections of fiction. "Inventions" consists of two invented creation myths. The three stories in "Dreams" are fantasy tales set in a common dream-world. The selections in "Imitations" are neither fantasy nor science fiction: "Time's Tapering Blade" is an experiment in form; "The Wake" concerns a group of friends dealing with a death; and "Janie, Hold the Light" is based on stories from the author's family about Christmas during the depression of the 1930's.

Divine and the Everyday Devil (Short Stories)

Description: Divine and the Everyday Devil contains a scholarly preface that discusses the experiences and literary works that influenced the author's writing with special attention in regards to spirituality and sexuality. The preface is followed by six original short stories. "Evil" is a work addressing a modern conception of evil. "Eschatology" concerns a man facing his own mortality. "The Gospel of Peter" tells the story of a husband grappling with his wife's religious beliefs. "The Mechanics of Projects" relates the experiences of a woman looking for love in Mexico. "The Rocky Normal Show" involves a husband growing apart from his wife and "Mutant: An Origin Story" is about a teenager trying to find his own unique identity.

A Perceptual Study of English Teachers and Language Arts Supervisors Concerning the Use of Vernacular Black English by Students and Teachers in the State of Texas

Description: The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the perceptions of English teachers and language arts supervisors in the State of Texas with respect to the use of vernacular black English in relation to selected demographic variables, (2) to determine whether their perceptions differed significantly from one another, and (3) to determine whether those who do not work with vernacular black English (VBE) speakers differed significantly in their perceptions from those who work with black-dialect speakers. The factors of subjects' ethnicity, present position of respondents, district size of those surveyed, and degree held by respondents were analyzed in relation to differences in opinion, perceptions of criteria for teaching students who speak VBE, knowledge of VBE, and attitudes of respondents toward VBE. Responses from subjects to an instrument provided the data for testing.

The Effects of Written Comment on Expository Composition

Description: This study was planned to investigate the effects of written comments on the expository compositions of eleventh-grade students using a cross section of ability groups. Data for combined groups and data for high-, middle-, and low-ability groups were used to determine whether one type of comment was more effective than another in improving the quantity and quality of student compositions and in improving student attitudes toward composition. Teachers may use the findings as a guide to what kinds of comments are most effective in reinforcing good writing skills and attitudes.

The Relative Effectiveness of Two Methodologies in High School Senior English in the Development of Composition Skills

Description: The problem with which this research is concerned is a comparison of two methodologies in the teaching of high school senior English with regard to their relative effectiveness in developing certain composition skills believed to be important in college academic success. The two methodologies compared in this study are (1) a traditional approach and (2) an experimental approach consistent with certain recommendations of the National Council of Teachers of English.
