NO/sub 2/ levels in diesel exhaust

Description: The safe operation of diesel-powered equipment in underground mines is predicated on there being sufficient ventilation to dilute the exhaust such that none of the toxicants in the dilute mixture exceed allowable levels. In order to determine the ventilation requirement for an engine, it is necessary to measure levels of the various toxicants in the exhaust. Measurements in the past typically either have excluded nitrogen dioxide or have not provided information on nitrogen dioxide specifically… more

Study on reduction of accessory-horsepower requirements. Third quarterly progress report

Description: The objective of this study program is to minimize automotive accessory horsepower consumption, and thereby maximize overall vehicle fuel economy, by utilizing continuously variable speed drives or auxiliary power units (APUs) in a standard passenger automobile. As an aid to definitizing accessory performance, load requirements and fuel economy, a baseline vehicle has beeen established. This vehicle is a conventional intermediate size 5- or 6-passenger automobile with a 4.1 to 5.7 liter (250 to… more

Durability testing at one atmosphere of advanced catalysts and catalyst supports for automotive gas turbine engine combustors. Part 1

Description: Studies were conducted to experimentally demonstrate the durability catalysts and catalyst supports in a combustion environment. A test of 1000 hours duration was completed with two catalysts, using No. 2 diesel fuel and operating at catalytically supported thermal combustion conditions. This atmospheric pressure durability test was conducted, using an air preheat temperature of about 640/sup 0/K and a reference velocity of about 14 meters/second. The adiabatic flame temperature of the fuel/air… more

Investigative study of engine limiting

Description: An experimental study was conducted to determine the effect of cylinder cut-out or ''engine limiting'' on fuel consumption and exhaust emissions for a current technology V-type 8-cylinder engine. Increases in energy conversion efficiency while operating with only 4 cylinders ranged from 10 to 40% compared to operation with 8 cylinders at the same power outputs. The speeds and loads chosen were representative of those required to operate a 4,500-lb vehicle at speeds up to 60 mph. Hydrocarbon emi… more

Energy study of railroad freight transportation. Volume 4. Efficiency improvements and industry future

Description: Railroad equipment and operating practices were largely developed in an era during which the price of fuel was a relatively minor part of the cost of railroad operations; however, fuel has now become a scarce and expensive resource. Although many opportunities exist for installing new equipment and operating practices that will result in fuel conservation, cost and market factors can promote or retard the rate at which changes are adopted, and only limited technology may be available for use in… more

Ceramic coatings on diesel engine components. Period covered: January 1979-August 1979

Description: Diesel engines with imporved thermal efficiency and fuel economy or flexibility will be required to meet automotive energy conservation goals. These goals can be met by minimizing engine heat loss to the coolant, i.e., by the use of a thermal insulating barrier on the interior surfaces of the combustion space. The development and testing of ceramic coatings for diesel engine components are discussed. These coatings include oxides of Al, Cr, Zr, Mg, Si, Ti, and Ca, and Mo and Ch carbides. Data o… more

Description: Work on several aspects of using pure methanol as an alternate fuel are reported. A stock (OEM) Pinto engine mounted on a dynamometer was used to compare methanol with Indolene in terms of power, efficiency, and emissions for a variety of speeds and loads. Although the engine was designed for use with gasoline, it was found that methanol was generally superior in power, thermal efficiency and reduced emissions with the exception of aldehydes. Three different fuel metering systems were tested fo… more
