Development and Thermo-Mechanical Testing of Low Hysteresis Shape Memory Alloy for Satellite Actuators

Description: Shape memory alloys (SMAs) have gained much attention as a powerful source of actuation due to their improved performance, reduced size, and reduced complexity between components as well as having a high work output density. Their primary mechanism of actuation relies on a non-diffusional cyclic phase transformation from martensite to austenite, where the amount of thermal energy needed per cycle is directly associated with the hysteresis width between the austenite final and martensite final t… more

Study of the Corrosion Resistance of 316L Stainless Steel Made by Directed Energy Deposition for Applications at an Elevated Temperature

Description: The corrosion resistance under elevated temperature of additively manufactured 316L stainless steel made by directed energy deposition was studied. Test samples were prepared in a hybrid additive manufacturing machine using standard deposition parameters recommended by the manufacturer. Control samples were cut from wrought material to compare the results. The test was performed under a corrosive atmosphere with a solution of water with 3.5 % in weight of salt (NaCl). The total duration of the … more

Synergistic Effects of Lattice Instability and Chemical Ordering on FCC Based Complex Concentrated Alloys

Description: The current work investigates how the interactions among constituent elements in high entropy alloys or complex concentrated alloys (HEA/CCAs) can lead to lattice instability and local chemical ordering which in turn affects the microstructure and properties of these alloys. Using binary enthalpies of mixing, the degree of ordering in concentrated multi-component solid solutions was successfully tailored by introducing Cr, Al and Ti in a CoFeNi HEA/CCA. CoFeNi was selected as the base alloy to … more

Considerations in Designing Alloys for Laser-Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing

Description: This work identifies alloy terminal freezing range, columnar growth, grain coarsening, liquid availability towards the terminal stage of solidification, and segregation towards boundaries as primary factors affecting the hot-cracking susceptibility of fusion-based additive manufacturing (F-BAM) processed alloys. Additionally, an integrated computational materials engineering (ICME)-based approach has been formulated to design novel Al alloys, and high entropy alloys for F-BAM processing. The IC… more

Processing-Structure-Property Correlation for Additively Manufactured Metastable High Entropy Alloy

Description: In the present study both fusion based - laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), and solid state - additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) additive manufacturing processes were employed for the manufacturing of a metastable high entropy alloy (HEA), Fe40Mn20Co20Cr15Si5 (CS-HEA). A processing window was developed for the LPBF and AFSD processings of CS-HEA. In case of LPBF, formation of solidification related defects such as lack of fusion pores (for energy density ≤ 31.24 J/mm3) and keyhole pores (for… more

Nano-Manufacturing of Catalytic Amorphous Alloys

Description: In this dissertation, nano-manufacturing of amorphous alloys for electro-catalytic applications is reported and the role of chemistry and active surface area on catalytic behavior is discussed. The catalytic activity of recently developed platinum and palladium-based metallic glasses was studied using cyclic voltammetry and localized electrochemical techniques. The synergistic effect between platinum and palladium was shown for amorphous alloys containing both these elements. The mechanism for … more

Alloy Development and High-Energy X-Ray Diffraction Studies of NiTiZr and NiTiHf High Temperature Shape Memory Alloys

Description: NiTi-based shape memory alloys (SMAs) offer a good combination of high-strength, ductility, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility that has served them well and attracted the attention of many researchers and industries. The alloys unique thermo-mechanical ability to recover their initial shape after relatively large deformations by heating or upon unloading due to a characteristic reversible phase transformation makes them useful as damping devices, solid state actuators, couplings, etc. H… more

Laser Additive Manufacturing of Magnetic Materials

Description: A matrix of variably processed Fe-30at%Ni was deposited with variations in laser travel speeds as well and laser powers. A complete shift in phase stability occurred as a function of varying laser travel speed. At slow travel speeds, the microstructure was dominated by a columnar fcc phase. Intermediate travel speeds yielded a mixed microstructure comprised of both the columnar fcc and a martensite-like bcc phase. At the fastest travel speed, the microstructure was dominated by the bcc phase. T… more

Experimental Investigations of Steel Scuffing and Coatings for Scuffing Prevention

Description: To improve the lifetime, enhance engine performance, decrease emissions, and inhibit tribological failures of fuel injection system components, the component materials need to resist scuffing under conditions of high temperatures, high pressures, and low viscosity fuel lubrication. The objectives of this dissertation are to improve the materials implemented in future fuel injection system designs by developing a laboratory-scale experimental method to induce scuffing on baseline steel materials… more

Thermodynamics, Kinetics and Mechanical Behavior of Model Metallic Glasses

Description: The thermophysical properties and deformation behavior of a systematic series of model metallic glasses was investigated. For Zr-based metallic glasses with all metallic constituents, the activation energy of glass transition was determined to be in the range of 74-173 kJ/mol while the activation energy of crystallization was in the range of 155-170 kJ/mol. The reduced glass transition temperature was roughly the same for all the alloys (~ 0.6) while the supercooled liquid region was in the ran… more
