Laboratory Development of an Electromagnetic Test for Uranium Quality

Description: An electromagnetic instrument similar to the Multitest was built and used to test 2200 uranium slugs. It was found that the equipment could be used to detect inclusions and cracks in the uranium, but that small cracks are not readily detectable on a production basis unless the material is absolutely uniform in inclusion content. The instrument can be used, however, to sort out hidden defects of a reasonable size and to reject grossly dirty uranium.

Long line coupling models.

Description: This report assembles models for the response of a wire interacting with a conducting ground to an electromagnetic pulse excitation. The cases of an infinite wire above the ground as well as resting on the ground and buried beneath the ground are treated. The focus is on the characteristics and propagation of the transmission line mode. Approximations are used to simplify the description and formulas are obtained for the current. The semi-infinite case, where the short circuit current can be ne… more

Electromagnetic coupling between transmitters and electro-explosive devices located within an enclosure.

Description: This report documents calculations conducted to determine if 42 low-power transmitters located within a metallic enclosure can initiate electro-explosive devices (EED) located within the same enclosure. This analysis was performed for a generic EED no-fire power level of 250 mW. The calculations show that if the transmitters are incoherent, the power available is 32 mW - approximately one-eighth of the assumed level even with several worst-case assumptions in place.

A Regulated Power Supply for a High Current Magnet

Description: Current regulation of a Bitter type electromagnet powered by a 10 kw. motor-generator set has been achieved by control of the generator exciting field. An error signal, obtained by comparing the voltage drop across a series resistor in the magnet circuit with a reference voltage, is fed back with appropriate amplification to the grids of series tubes in the generator field supply. Magnetic fields from 400 gauss to 10 kilogauss in a fixed gap (1.5 in. width and 3.5 in. diameter) are obtainable w… more
