The History and Development of Consumer's Surplus and Its Relevance as a Measure of Welfare Change

Description: The thesis analyzes the validity of consumer's surplus as a measure of welfare change. The analysis begins by examining the chronological development of the concept. Once an understanding of consumer's surplus is formulated, an evaluation of its use in modern ad hoc problems can be undertaken. Chapter II and III discuss the development of consumer's surplus from Classical economics to its modern reformulations, The concept's application to different problems is discussed in Chapter IV. Chapter V and VI deal with the intergration of consumer's surplus and the compensation principle. The primary conclusion is that the Laspeyres measure, in combination with the compensation test, provides a definitive measure of welfare change in a limited situation.

Elasticity of Money as a Reinforcer: Assessing Multiple Compositions of Unit Price

Description: Behavioral economics is the integration of concepts from micro-economics into behavior analysis. Most of the research in behavioral economics has been done with non-human subjects and with drugs as reinforcers. This study represents an extension of previous research to assess money as a reinforcer with humans as subjects. The participants in this study solved math problems to earn money at various unit prices. Results indicate that demand of money adhered to the law of demand in that consumption decreased as unit prices increased. An underlying assumption is that consumption should be equivalent at different compositions of unit price. Replications of either the same or different compositions of unit price indicated that there were some discrepancies in consumption in this study.

The Theory of Capitalistic Stagnation

Description: The problem to be dealt with in this paper is the theory of capitalistic stagnation. Why is it important to examine the theory of capitalistic stagnation? The continuity of the theory of stagnation is the only portion of economic doctrine that is held in common by the Classical, Marxian, Keynesian, and Institutional economists.

The development of a charge protocol to take advantage of off- and on-peak demand economics at facilities

Description: This document reports the work performed under Task 1.2.1.1: 'The development of a charge protocol to take advantage of off- and on-peak demand economics at facilities'. The work involved in this task included understanding the experimental results of the other tasks of SOW-5799 in order to take advantage of the economics of electricity pricing differences between on- and off-peak hours and the demonstrated charging and facility energy demand profiles. To undertake this task and to demonstrate the feasibility of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and electric vehicle (EV) bi-directional electricity exchange potential, BEA has subcontracted Electric Transportation Applications (now known as ECOtality North America and hereafter ECOtality NA) to use the data from the demand and energy study to focus on reducing the electrical power demand of the charging facility. The use of delayed charging as well as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-building (V2B) operations were to be considered.

Power system simulation and optimization models for planning nuclear refueling cycles

Description: From Operation Research Society of America; San Diego, California, USA (12 Nov 1973). The mid-range system being modeled may include a mix of fossil, nuclear, hydro, pumped-storage, and peaking units. For any predetermined nuclear refueling schedule, the program (ORSIM) determines an approximately optical plan of operation for the system. This includes the determination of a maintenance schedule for the non-nuclear units and a schedule of energy delivery for each plant in the system. The criterion of optimality is the minimization of the total discounted operating cost of the system over the specified study period. Over this period, the model computes the expected station load factors, the loss of load probability and unserved energy for the system, and the production costs of operating so as to meet the forecasted loads on the system. The code takes account of variations and growth in demand over the planning horizon, occurrence of unit forced outages, planned shutdowns for nuclear refuelings, maintenance scheduling, allocations of fixed hydro and nuclear energies, and interactions between nuclear unit reloadings and fuel costs. 13 references. An Analysis of Economic Understanding and Values of High School Seniors in a Large Metropolitan School District

Description: The problem of this study was to analyze the economic understanding and values of high school seniors in a large metropolitan school district. To attack the problem, three purposes were formulated. The first purpose was to determine if students enrolled in a one-semester, elective course in economics differed significantly in terms of economic understanding from students enrolled in a comparable non-economic social studies course. Another purpose was to determine if an already existing value orientation had some effect on a change in economic understanding. The final purpose was to see if a change in a particular value orientation was related to a change in economic understanding.

On the need and use of models to explore the role of economic confidence:a survey.

Description: Empirical studies suggest that consumption is more sensitive to current income than suggested under the permanent income hypothesis, which raises questions regarding expectations for future income, risk aversion, and the role of economic confidence measures. This report surveys a body of fundamental economic literature as well as burgeoning computational modeling methods to support efforts to better anticipate cascading economic responses to terrorist threats and attacks. This is a three part survey to support the incorporation of models of economic confidence into agent-based microeconomic simulations. We first review broad underlying economic principles related to this topic. We then review the economic principle of confidence and related empirical studies. Finally, we provide a brief survey of efforts and publications related to agent-based economic simulation.
