Lost circulation technology development status

Description: Lost circulation is the loss of drilling fluid from the wellbore to fractures or pores in the rock formation. In geothermal drilling, lost circulation is often a serious problem that contributes greatly to the cost of the average geothermal well. The Lost Circulation Technology Development Program is sponsored at Sandia National Laboratories by the US Department of Energy. The goal of the program is to reduce lost circulation costs by 30--50% through the development of mitigation and characteri… more

Design of a diesel exhaust-gas purification system for inert-gas drilling

Description: To combat the serious oxygen corrosion of drill pipe when a low density drilling fluid (air or mist) is used in geothermal drilling, a system has been designed that produces an inert gas (essentially nitrogen) to be substituted for air. The system fits on three flatbed trailers, is roadable and produces 2000 scfm of gas. The projected cost for gas is slightly less than $2.00 per thousand standard cubic feet.

Geothermal drilling problems and their impact on cost

Description: Historical data are presented that demonstrate the significance of unexpected problems. In extreme cases, trouble costs are the largest component of well costs or severe troubles can lead to abandonment of a hole. Drilling experiences from US geothermal areas are used to analyze the frequency and severity of various problems. In addition, average trouble costs are estimated based on this analysis and the relationship between trouble and depth is discussed. The most frequent drilling and complet… more

Advanced materials for geothermal energy processes

Description: The primary goal of the geothermal materials program is to ensure that the private sector development of geothermal energy resources is not constrained by the availability of technologically and economically viable materials of construction. This requires the performance of long-term high risk GHTD-sponsored materials R and D. Ongoing programs described include high temperature elastomers for dynamic sealing applications, advanced materials for lost circulation control, waste utilization and di… more

Drilling fluid/formation interaction at simulated in situ geothermal conditions. Final report

Description: Interaction of drilling fluids with a geothermal reservoir formation can result in significant permeability impairment and therefore reduced well productivity. This interaction is studied under simulated in situ geothermal conditions of overburden stress, pore fluid pressure, temperature, and pore fluid chemistry. Permeability impairment of an East Mesa KGRA reservoir material is evaluated as a function of stagnation time, drilling fluid, and temperature. Results indicate that all of these para… more

Development and evaluation of a meter for measuring return line fluid flow rates during drilling

Description: The most costly problem routinely encountered in geothermal drilling is lost circulation, which occurs when drilling fluid is lost to the formation rather than circulating back to the surface. The successful and economical treatment of lost circulation requires the accurate measurement of drilling fluid flow rate both into and out of the well. This report documents the development of a meter for measuring drilling fluid outflow rates in the return line of a drilling rig. The meter employs a rol… more

Considerations in the use of water jets to enlarge deep submerged cavities

Description: In order to facilitate use of reinjection wells, and to lower their cost, it has been proposed that a single well be reamed from 22-1/2 cm to 2 m diameter over an increment of 70 m at a depth of 2000 m. In this manner a single well would be capable of coping with flow rates which currently necessitate a dozen wells being emplaced. The problems encountered in using high pressure water jets for this reaming operation are described. Limiting parameters on the use of high pressure water jets and th… more

Investigating the impact of drilling mud and its major components on bivalve species of Georges bank. Progress report No. 2, February 28, 1979-November 1, 1979

Description: Results described in progress report No. 1 indicate that 0.3-1.0 grams of drilling mud/liter of seawater can stress bivalve molluscs and that metallic components of drilling muds are assimilated by these organisms. The results posed questions about the short- and long-term effects of stress on energy stores, reproduction, and metal assimilation; accordingly, this year's research program has focused on these three areas and on a continued chemical characterization of the drilling muds used.

Frictional heating and convective cooling of polycrystalline diamond drag tools during rock cutting

Description: A numerical-analytical model is developed to predict temperatures in stud-mounted polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) drag tools during rock cutting. Experimental measurements of the convective heat transfer coefficient for PDC cutters are used in the model to predict temperatures under typical drilling conditions with fluid flow. The analysis compares favorably with measurements of frictional temperatures in controlled cutting tests on Tennessee marble. It is shown that mean cutter wearflat … more

Thermal conductivity of aqueous foam

Description: Thermal conductivity plays an important part in the response of aqueous foams used as geothermal drilling fluids. The thermal conductivity of these foams was measured at ambient conditions using the thermal conductivity probe technique. Foam densities studied were from 0.03 to 0.2 g/cm/sup 3/, corresponding to liquid volume fractions of the same magnitude. Microscopy of the foams indicated bubble sizes in the range 50 to 300 ..mu..m for nitrogen foams, and 30 to 150 ..mu..m for helium foams. Bu… more

Full-scale laboratory drilling tests on sandstone and dolomite. Final report

Description: Full-scale laboratory drilling experiments were performed under simulated downhole conditions to determine what effect changing various drilling parameters has on penetration rate. The two rock types, typical of deep oil and gas reservoirs, used for the tests were Colton Sandstone and Bonne Terre Dolomite. Drilling was performed with standard 7/sup 7///sub 8/ inch rotary insert bits and water base mud. The results showed the penetration rate to be strongly dependent on bit weight, rotary speed,… more

Aqueous foam surfactants for geothermal drilling fluids: 1. Screening

Description: Aqueous foam is a promising drilling fluid for geothermal wells because it will minimize damage to the producing formation and would eliminate the erosion problems of air drilling. Successful use of aqueous foam will require a high foaming surfactant which will: (1) be chemically stable in the harsh thermal and chemical environment, and (2) form stable foams at high temperatures and pressures. The procedures developed to generate and test aqueous foams and the effects of a 260/sup 0/C temperatu… more
