Report on efforts to model and replicate the paths of the CarbonExplorers deployed April 2001 (NOAA GC04-304 (James Bishop, PI)

Description: This report is intended to document the efforts I made tomodel the North Pacific in order to understand the path of the CarbonExplorers, deployed April 10, 2001. Interestingly, these floats movedwestward and northward in the first two months after deployment at OceanStation PAPA (hereafter, OSP), rather than eastward as expected. Myintent was to force the model with the observed winds and temperatures inorder to replicate the path of the floats during this time period. I thenwanted to compare these paths with the conditions in 2003, when thefloats took a more accelerated path and saw different biomass signatures.Unfortunately, I was never able to replicate the path of the 2001 floats:the model floats always went eastward. So, this report is a documentationof what I tried, some thoughts about why I was not successful, and afinal section explaining where the files are located at NERSC, in casesomeone else wants to expand on the current work.

Forty-Fourth Annual Report of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics Administrative Report Including Technical Reports Nos. 1342 to 1392

Description: In accordance with act of Congress, approved March 3, 1915, as amended (U.S.C., title 50, .sw 151), which established the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the Committee submits its Forty-fourth Annual Report for the fiscal year 1958. This is the Committee's final report to the Congress. The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 (Public Law 85-568) provides in section 301 that the NACA "shall cease to exist" and "all functions, powers, duties, and obligations, and all real and personal property, personnel (other than members of the Committee), funds, and records of the NACA shall be transferred to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The aforesaid act provides that "this section shall take effect 90 days after the date of the enactment of this act, or on any earlier date on which the Administrator shall determining and announce by proclamation published in the Federal Register, that the Administration has been organized and is prepared to discharge the duties and exercise the power conferred upon it by this act." The Administrator, Hon. T. Keith Glennan has advised the Committee of his intention to issue such proclamation, effective October 1,1958.

Description: In accordance with the act of Congress, approved March 3,1915 (U.S. C. title 50, sec. 151), which established the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics the Committee submits its thirty-seventh annual report for the fiscal year 1951. The United States is engaged in expanding military aviation to levels never before reached except in the midst of a major war. In Korea, our military aircraft are engaged in combat with airplanes of an unfriendly nation evidently able to build military aircraft of increasing capabilities. In this environment, the NACA is responsible for conducting an adequate program of scientific research to open the way for the design of aircraft and missile of superior performance. Since World War II the pace of technical development has increased. Until then, improvement in aircraft performance as a result of the application of scientific research proceeded at what. now seems to be a relatively slow and orderly rate. Modest increases in speed, climb, range, or altitude were set as reasonable goals. Compressibility effects at high speeds were just beginning to be encountered and indicated a formidable barrier near the velocity of sound. This barrier has been found by research and experiment to be lees formidable than supposed, and we now see the possibility of radical gains in airplane performance that are of great military significance. Such gains are ak attainable by a potential enemy. The increased complexity of modern high performance.

Thirty-Ninth Annual Report of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics: Administrative Report Including Technical Reports Nos. 1111 to 1157

Description: This is the fiftieth year since Wilbur and Orville Wright at Kitty Hawk N. C., made their powered flight. That airplane was a fragile and unsteady machine of no immediate utility. It flew for only a minute but it disclosed the solution of the age-old problem of human flight. The Wrights were the first in the history of man to fly. There was no one to teach them. They had to discover principles and to learn the art by cautious and methodical experimenting. From their own research they obtained the practical information needed to design their successful flying machine. The Wrights received no effective aid from the theoretical studies of flight made by the mathematicians of the nineteenth century. The science of aerodynamics was developed in response to the practical demands of aeronautics in the years to follow. In 1908, the Wrights demonstrated at Fort Myer, Va., a vastly improved flyer, the first military airplane. It carried a passenger and flew for more than an hour. Following this public demonstration, the development of the airplane was taken up vigorously. At first France and Germany took the lead, then Great Britain, but the United States lagged behind in the furthering of this greatest American development of the century. With war clouds in view in 1915, the Congress established the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics to undertake the scientific study of the problems of fight with a view to their practical solution. President Wilson appointed the members of the first Committee, consisting of the heads of the military and civil agencies of the Government concerned with aeronautics and experts from private life.

DOCUMENTATION FOR PROGRAM OGRE

Description: This is a brief description of a computer program which was written by Oleh Weres to generate discrete grids for IFD* type computer programs. The output of the program includes data which can be used directly for input to the program SHAFT78. The program is specifically intended for large-scale two or three-dimensional reservoir simulation. The program requires, as input, the x, y, z coordinates of the discrete element locations being used to specify a particular reservoir's geological system. From the list of element locations, the program finds the midpoints of lines joining adjacent elements. At each midpoint the program constructs a perpendicular plane. The intersections of the planes in the three-space defines an irregular (in general) n-sided polyhedron around each element center. In two-dimensions the program produces a unique 'tiling' which has polygons with all faces perpendicular to the lines joining adjacent elements. The areas between adjoining elements and the volume of each element are calculated. The end result, in general, is a three-dimensional grid of n-sided polyhedra for which the element locations, the connecting (flow) areas, and the element volumes are all known. Since the grids are finite the program must have information about the boundary of the grid. This is supplied as a set of 'dummy' elements which are used only to limit the extent of the grid and are not intended for use in the reservoir simulation.

Auditors’ Information Search and Documentation: Does Knowledge of the Client Preference Or PCAOB Accountability Pressure Matter?

Description: Auditors regularly make judgments regarding whether a client’s chosen accounting policy is appropriate and in accordance with generally accepted accounting Principles (GAAP). However, to form this judgment, auditors must either possess adequate topic-specific knowledge or must gain such knowledge through information search. This search is subject to numerous biases, including a bias toward confirmation of a client’s preference. It is important to further our understanding of bias in auditors’ information search to identify its causes and effects. Furthering our understanding is necessary to provide a basis for recommending and evaluating a potential debiaser, such as accountability. the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) annually inspects the audit files of selected engagements, which introduces a new form of accountability within the auditing profession. This new form of accountability has come at great cost, however, there is little empirical evidence regarding its effects on auditors’ processes. As such, it is important to understand whether the presence of accountability from the PCAOB is effective in modifying auditors’ search behaviors to diminish confirmation bias. Using an online experiment, I manipulate client preference (unknown vs. known) and PCAOB accountability pressure (low vs. high) and measure search type (information –focus or decision-focus), search depth (shallow or deep) and documentation quality. I investigate whether auditors’ information search behaviors differ based on knowledge of client’s preference and in the presence of accountability from an expected PCAOB inspection. I also investigate whether differences in auditors’ information search behaviors influence documentation quality, which is the outcome of greatest concern to the PCAOB. I hypothesize and find a client preference effect on information search type such that auditors with knowledge of the client preference consider guidance associated with the client’s preference longer than those without knowledge of the client’s preference. Encouraging PV Adoption in New Market-Rate ResidentialConstruction: A Critical Review of Program Experiences to Date

Description: In this paper, we review experiences with programs to support the deployment of photovoltaics (PV) in new, market-rate homes, drawing upon interviews with program managers around the country, project data, and publicly-available documentation on program design, impacts, and experiences. We focus on state clean energy funds, which have been established in 14 U.S. states to build markets for clean energy resources, as well as a select number of other state or local organizations whose activities are particularly noteworthy. We describe the types of programs implemented and their impacts to date, and discuss key issues and lessons learned for initiatives aimed at growing the new home market for PV.

Creation of a GUI for Zori, a Quantum Monte Carlo program, usingRappture

Description: In their research laboratories, academic institutions produce some of the most advanced software for scientific applications. However, this software is usually developed only for local application in the research laboratory or for method development. In spite of having the latest advances in the particular field of science, such software often lacks adequate documentation and therefore is difficult to use by anyone other than the code developers. As such codes become more complex, so typically do the input files and command statements necessary to operate them. Many programs offer the flexibility of performing calculations based on different methods that have their own set of variables and options to be specified. Moreover, situations can arise in which certain options are incompatible with each other. For this reason, users outside the development group can be unaware of how the program runs in detail. The opportunity can be lost to make the software readily available outside of the laboratory of origin. This is a long-standing problem in scientific programming. Rappture, Rapid Application Infrastructure [1], is a new GUI development kit that enables a developer to build an I/O interface for a specific application. This capability enables users to work only with the generated GUI and avoids the problem of the user needing to learn details of the code. Further, it reduces input errors by explicitly specifying the variables required. Zori, a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) program, developed by the Lester group at the University of California, Berkeley [2], is one of the few free tools available for this field. Like many scientific computer packages, Zori suffers from the problems described above. Potential users outside the research group have acquired it, but some have found the code difficult to use.
