/sup 16/O + /sup 40/Ca inelastic scattering and the elastic scattering wave function

Description: The /sup 16/O + /sup 40/Ca inelastic scattering has been measured at 60-MeV incident energy, and evidence has been found in support of an explicit coupling between direct and elastic channels. The measurements were extended over a large angular range and in particular to very forward angles. The ratio of cross sections between extreme forward and backward angles proved very useful in studying the underlying reaction mechanism.

Neutron environment in d + Li facilities

Description: A microscopic d + Li neutron yield model has been developed based upon classical models and experimental data. Using equations suggested by the Serber and evaporation models, a generalized least squares adjustment procedure generated angular yields for E/sub d/ to 40 MeV using the available experimental data. The HEDL-UCD experiment at E/sub d/ = 35 was used to adjust parameters describing the neutron spectra. The model is used to predict yields, spectra, and damage responses in the FMIT Test C… more

In-Vitro and in-Vivo Characterization of Ruthenium-Bleomycin Compared to Cobalt- and Copper-Bleomycin

Description: Bleomycin (BLM) has undergone extensive investigation both as a cancer chemotherapeutic agent, and as a carrier for radionuclides for tumor imaging. The available methods or the radionuclides used, however, have had limited effectiveness. Although labeling of BLM with /sup 103/Ru has been reported earlier, we carried out a study to develop a more reproducible method of labeling particularly for use with Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer produced /sup 97/Ru. Ruthenium-97 has favorable physical p… more

Sensitivity of primary knock-on atom spectra and displacement per atom cross sections to different secondary neutron energy and angular distributions and ''in-group'' weighting schemes

Description: The sensitivity of primary knock-on atom (PKA) spectra and displacement per atom (DPA) cross sections to different secondary neutron energy and angular distributions and ''in-group'' weighting schemes is investigated. It is shown that the sensitivity of the PKA spectra and DPA cross sections for the (n,n' unresolved) and (n,2n) reactions in Fe to different angular distributions and the same secondary neutron spectrum is reasonably large (approximately 15%), whereas the … more

Transient Temperature Distributions in a Thermally Orthotropic Plate With Non-Uniform Surface Heating

Description: ent temperature variation in a thermally orthotropic plate which is subjected to an arbitrary heating rate distribution along one face with all other surfaces being insulated. Dimensionless temperature histories and distributions determined from this solution are presented for the special, but representative, case of a linearly varying heating rate distribution on plates with varying degrees of thermal orthotropy. These results establish quantitatively the value of a material with high planar a… more

Statistical relationship between median visibility and conditions of worst-case manmade impact on visibility

Description: A study was conducted of the statistical relationships between median visibility and the levels of visibility associated with worst-case manmade impacts. The data base for the study consisted of midday visibility recordings for the years 1974-1976 at 28 suburban/nonurban airports throughout the United States. The visibility recordings were converted to estimates of extinction coefficients with the use of the Koschmeider formula. The data were sorted according to meteorology in order to eliminat… more

Early events in irradiated water. [5-keV electrons]

Description: We propose a model to continue following events from the initial energy deposition (<10/sup -15/ s) through later times at which liquid water can begin to respond chemically to the passage of radiation. We use a Monte Carlo code to calculate the spatial distributions of the chemical species present at times of about 10/sup -11/ s. This information provides the necessary input for diffusion-kinetic calculations to predict the subsequent chemical evolution of the system and measurable transient a… more

Northern Arizona Basin Study (NABS), 1989

Description: An experiment was conducted to better understand a frequent layer of northwest winds found in the Northern Arizona region. This layer has been observed most often in winter near the surface at Page, Arizona, and often opposes larger scale upper level west winds. The results of this experiment improved both the temporal and the down-valley spatial resolution of the flow structure in this region during winter. 11 refs., 9 figs.

Structure of NH/sub 3/ on Ni(111)

Description: In a recent study of the adsorption of NH/sub 3/ on NI(111) at T approx. 190 K using angle resolved UPS, it was concluded that NH/sub 3/ is molecularly adsorbed, and is bonded to the surface via the N atom with the H atoms oriented away from the surface. To study the bonding configuration using a direct and independent technique, we have examined NH/sub 3/ on Ni(111) using the electron stimulated desorption ion angular distribution (ESDIAD) method, coupled with temperature programmed desorption… more

Radiological survey of the radioactive sands and residues at Lowman, Idaho

Description: No uranium ore milling was performed at the Lowman site, which is located approximately 0.8 km northeast of the town of Lowman, Idaho. Nevertheless, approximately 80,000 metric tons of radioactive sands and residues from upgrading of heavy minerals by physical processing methods remain on the site grounds. Measurements of external gamma radiation 1 m above the surface showed exposure rates up to 2.4 mR/hr on site, but the exposure rate off site quickly dropped to the background level in all dir… more

SOILD: A computer model for calculating the effective dose equivalent from external exposure to distributed gamma sources in soil

Description: The SOLID computer model was developed for calculating the effective dose equivalent from external exposure to distributed gamma sources in soil. It is designed to assess external doses under various exposure scenarios that may be encountered in environmental restoration programs. The models four major functional features address (1) dose versus source depth in soil, (2) shielding of clean cover soil, (3) area of contamination, and (4) nonuniform distribution of sources. The model is also capab… more

Photoemission from solids: the transition from solid-state to atomic physics

Description: As the photon energy is increased, photoemission from solids undergoes a slow transition from solid-state to atomic behavior. However, throughout the energy range h..nu.. = 10 to 1000 eV or higher both types of phenomena are present. Thus angle-resolved photoemission can only be understood quantitatively if each experimenter recognizes the presence of band-structure, photoelectron diffraction, and photoelectron asymmetry effects. The quest for this understanding will build some interesting brid… more
