FURTHER ASPECTS OF THE THEORY OF THE MASER. Special Technical Report on RESEARCH INVESTIGATION DIRECTED TOWARD EXTENDING THE USEFUL RANGE OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM

Description: The theory of the molecular transitions which are induced by the microwave field in a maser and the effects of various design parameters are examined in detail. It is shown that the theoretical minimum detectable beam intensity when the maser is used as a spectrometer for the 3-3 line of ammonia is about 10{sup 9} molecules/sec under typical experimental conditions. Various systematic frequency shifts and random fequency fluctuations of the maser oscillator are discussed and evaluated. The most… more

Electrostatic Effects in the Deposition of Aerosols on Cylindrical Shapes. Technical Report No. 15

Description: A basic study of the mechanism of deposition of small particles on cylindrical collectors in the presence of electrostatic forces has been made. Theoretical equations predicting the efficiency of collection have been derived and solved with a digital computer. The solution of these equations is shown. The deposition of liquid aerosol particles on cylindrical collectors was measured experimentally for a range of electrostatic conditions. The experimental results agree with the theory. An experim… more

Some Nuclear Properties of Bi206, Tl200, Tl201, Tl202, In109, In110m, and In111 : the Nuclear Spins of Bi206, Tl200, Tl201, and Tl202 ; the Nuclear Spins, Magnetic Dipole, and Electric Quadrapole Interaction Constants of In209, In110m, and In111

Description: The atomic-beam magnetic-resonance flop-in technique using radioactive detection was employed to measure the nuclear spins doff B/sup 206/ , Ti/sup 200/ , Tl/sup 201/ Tl/sup 202, In/sup 09. ln/sup 110m/ and In/sup 111/. In addition the magnetic-dipole and constatns of In/sup 109/, In/sup 110m/, ined. the signs of the In/sup 110m/ con-, stants were not determined. Results, theory, procedure, and data reduction are given. (auth)

ELECTRON-POPULATION ANALYSIS AND THE DIPOLE MOMENT OF THE LiH$sup 1$$Sigma$$sup +$ EXCITED STATE

Description: Detailed consideration is given to some properties of the first excited electronic state. Following the analysis proposed by Mulliken, SCF LCAO-MO coefficients are used to obtain qualitative information about the electron distribution. Comparison is made with earlier work with respect to the description of the excited state in terms of the interacting configurations. In addition to the excited-state dipole moment, the effective electric moment between the ground and excited states is also calcu… more

Nuclear Spin and Hyperfine-Structure Measurements on the Radioactive-Iodine and Astatine Isotopes

Description: Atomic-beam magnetic resonance techniques were used to measure the nuclear spins of I/sup 123/, I/sup 124/, I/sup 126/, I/sup 130/, I/sup 132/, I/ sup 133/, I/sup 135/, and At/sup 211/. Also, measurements of the magnetic-dipole interaction constant, and the electroquadrupole interaction constant, and the electroquadrupole interaction constant for I/sup 131/ and I/sup 132/ are reported. The design of the atomic-beam apparatus is described. Experimental methods and sample preparation are discusse… more

Dissociation of Molecular Ions by Electric Fields [Part 2]

Description: The reactions pi /sup -/ + p yields p + p + n and pi /sup -/ + p yields p + d were investigated. The calculations are based on thirdorder perturbation theory with pseudoscalar coupling between nucleons and pions and with a phenomenological treatment of the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the final state. The final-state interactions of the antinucleon are neglected. Cross sections are given in graphical form for the reactions and for trsnsitions between eigenstates of isotopic spin. The final-st… more

Oscillating Vertical Magnetic Dipole Above a Conducting Half-Space

Description: The electromagnetic field produced by a vertical oscillating magnetic dipole above a plane conducting earth is obtained in integral form. An exact solution in closed form is obtained for the case in which the dipole and the point of observation are both located on the surface of the earth. (auth)

Mutual Charge Neutralization of Gaseous Ions

Description: The problem of the bimolecular rate constant, alpha , for the mutual charge neutralization reaction (ion-ion recombination) for ions formed by the vacuum ultraviolet photolysis of nitric oxide is considered. The pressure dependence of alpha over a pressure range of 10 to 600 torr for mixtures of a few hundred microns of NO with He, Ar, Kr, Xe, H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and N/sub 2/ was measured. From the low-pressure limit of alpha , the rate constant for charge neutralization in the absence of a thi… more

Physical Limitations on the Measurement of Transient Fields in Air and in Dissipative Media Using Electric and Magnetic Probes

Description: The properties of electric and magnetic probes for the measurement of transient electromagnetic fields in air and in dissipative media are discussed briefly, It is shown that the effective height of an electrically small loop is independent of the ambient medium. This is also virtually true for a thin electrically short dipole (or monopole). If the open-circuit voltage of a magnetic probe can be measured accurately, it is possible (in principle) to reconstruct the time history of the incident m… more
