Thermoelectric Properties of the Plasma Diode

Description: It is well known that thermionic emission into vacuum is accompanied by a Peltier cooling of the vacuum metal interface. The interface may be thought of as a junction between two conductors: the metal, and an electron gas whose distribution is determined primarily by space charge. The addition of a small amount of easily ionized gas to the vacuum region does not affect the Peltier cooling of the interface, but is does squeeze the space charge region to about one micron and replaces most of the … more

Emission Characteristics of Tantalum, Tungsten, Rhenium, and Iridium in Plasma Diodes

Description: Experimental determinations of the ionic and electronic emission characteristics of Ta, W, Re, and lr cathodes in vapor thermionic converters are compared. It is shown that Ta provides superior thermal ionization qualities at high pressure compared with W, Re, and Lr. High electronic current densities may be obtained from Cs on Re and Cs on Ir at much lower Cs vapor pressures than from Ta or W. An over-all efficiency of 19% was achieved with a Re cathode at 2440 deg K. (auth)

OPTIMIZATION OF EFFICIENCY OF A CESIUM DIODE CONVERTER

Description: The efficiency of the converter is computed with the least possible assumptions. The current density in the diode is assumed to be given by the Richardson-Dushman equation.
