A Checkout of the Beam-Line's Beam Position Measurement Systems

Description: This pbar note is to describe a recent checkout of the AP3, AP2, AP1 and P2 (F11 to F17) Beam Position Measurement (BPM) systems. The integrity of all BPMs (plates, cables, connectors and RF module) were performed. For each beam-line, the BPM positions polarity were checked: all of the horizontal (vertical) BPMs of a beam-line are to be consistent in defining left/right (up/down) by the sign of the position. The plates impedances have been measured. The position offsets at the output of the RF … more

Signal processing for longitudinal parameters of the Tevatron beam

Description: We describe the system known as the Tevatron SBD [1] which is used to provide information on the longitudinal parameters of coalesced beam bunches in the Tevatron. The system has been upgraded over the past year with a new digitizer and improved software. The quantities provided for each proton and antiproton bunch include the intensity, the longitudinal bunch profile, the timing of the bunch with respect to the low-level RF, the momentum spread and the longitudinal emittance. The system is cap… more

Characterization and Compensation of High Speed Digitizers

Description: Increasingly, ADC technology is being pressed into service for single single-shot instrumentation applications that were formerly served by vacuum-tube based oscilloscopes and streak cameras. ADC technology, while convenient, suffers significant performance impairments. Thus, in these demanding applications, a quantitative and accurate representation of these impairments is critical to an understanding of measurement accuracy. We have developed a phase-plane behavioral model, implemented it in … more

Multivideo image processing for beam profile monitoring system

Description: Some experiments at Jefferson Lab demand tight beam size ({approx} 100 {mu}m) and very low energy spread (< 5 x 10{sup {minus}5}). These experiments also require simultaneous and continuous monitoring of these quantities. This paper focuses on the development of the image processing aspects of the beam profile monitoring system. A pipelined image processor, Datacube's MaxVideo MV200, calculates beam sizes and positions from two beam profile monitors simultaneously at 10 Hz rate. Multiplexing… more

Modified Noise Power Ratio testing of high resolution digitizers

Description: A broadband, full signal range, side-by-side (tandem) test method for estimating the internal noise performance of high resolution digitizers is described and illustrated. The technique involves a re-definition of the traditional Noise Power Ratio (NPR) test, a change that not only makes this test applicable to higher resolution systems than was previously practical, but also enhances its value and flexibility. Since coherence analysis is the basis of this new definition, and since the applicat… more

Velocimetry Using Heterodyne Techniques

Description: At LLNL, we have been using heterodyne techniques for the past year and a half to measure velocities up to several kilometers-per-second on different types of experiments. We assembled this diagnostic, which we call the Heterodyne Velocimeter (HetV), using commercially available products developed for the communications industry. We use a 1550 nm fiber laser and single mode fibers to deliver light to and from the target. The return Doppler-shifted light is mixed with the original laser light to… more

UXO Engineering Design. Technical Specification and ConceptualDesign

Description: The design and fabrication of the UXO detector has numerous challenges and is an important component to the success of this study. This section describes the overall engineering approach, as well as some of the technical details that brought us to the present design. In general, an array of sensor coils is measuring the signal generated by the UXO object in response to a stimulation provided by the driver coil. The information related to the location, shape and properties of the object is deriv… more

A Novel System for High-Speed Velocimetry Using Heterodyne Techniques

Description: We have built a high-speed velocimeter that has proven to be compact, simple to operate, and fairly inexpensive. We assembled our velocimeter using off-the-shelf components developed for the telecommunications industry. The main components are fiber lasers, high-bandwidth high-sample-rate digitizers, and fiber optic circulators. The laser is a 2-watt CW fiber laser operating at 1550 nm. The digitizers have 8-GHz bandwidth and can digitize four channels simultaneously at 20 GS/s. The maximum vel… more

Description: This report presents findings of analyses of recorded current and voltage data associated with 72 electrical joints operating at high current and high mechanical stress. The analysis goal was to characterize the mechanical behavior of each joint and thus evaluate its mechanical supports. The joints are part of the toroidal field (TF) magnet system of the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) pulsed plasma device operating at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL). Since there is no… more

Method and Apparatus for Reading Meters From a Video Image

Description: A method and system enable acquisition of data about an environment from one or more meters using video images. One or more meters are imaged by a video camera and the video signal is digitized. Then, each region of the digital image which corresponds to the indicator of the meter is calibrated and the video signal is analyzed to determine the value indicated by each meter indicator. Finally, from the value indicated by each meter indicator in the calibrated region, a meter reading is generated… more

This system is assembled from commercially available components that were developed for the telecommunications industry. There are several advantages of this system over the traditional VISAR method that has made it increasingly popular. This system is compact, portable, and relatively inexpensive. The maximum velocity of this system is determined by the electrical bandwidth of the electronics and the digit… more

Color orthophotography: To scan or not

Description: A picture is worth a thousand words, which explains why digital orthophotographs have become such a popular item. Today, most procurement of orthophotographs result in a digital product. However, if one already has hard copy orthophotography, should one scan them, or have them produced as true digital orthophotographs? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each methodology? This paper examines the procedure the Facility for Information Management, Analysis, and Display (FIMAD) at Los Ala… more

Oscilloscope trace photograph digitizing system (TRACE). [FAWTEK code]

Description: The digitizing system allows digitization of photographs or sketches of waveforms and then the computer is used to reduce and analyze the data. The software allows for alignment, calibration, removal of baselines, removal of unwanted points and addition of new points which makes for a fairly versatile system as far as data reduction and manipulation are concerned. System considerations are introduced first to orient the potential user to the process of digitizing information. The start up and a… more

ADC and TDC implemented using FPGA

Description: Several tests of FPGA devices programmed as analog waveform digitizers are discussed. The ADC uses the ramping-comparing scheme. A multi-channel ADC can be implemented with only a few resistors and capacitors as external components. A periodic logic levels are shaped by passive RC network to generate exponential ramps. The FPGA differential input buffers are used as comparators to compare the ramps with the input signals. The times at which these ramps cross the input signals are digitized by t… more

Active Filter Hardware Design & Performance for the DIII-D Plasma Control System

Description: OAK-B135 The digital plasma control system (PCS), currently in operation on the DIII-D tokamak, requires inputs from a large number of sensors. Due to the nature of the digitizers and the relative noisy environment from which these signals are derived, each of the 32 signals must be conditioned via an active filter. Two different types of filters, Chebyshev and Bessel with fixed frequencies: 100 Hz Bessel was used for filtering the motional Stark effect diagnostic data. 800 Hz Bessel was design… more
