Single particle behavior in plasmas

Description: The paper follows the history of a neutral atom or molecule into a plasma--ionization, dissociation, radiation,--until it becomes a set of charged particles moving in the electromagnetic fields of the plasma system. The various useful forms of the method of averaging are displayed and applied to calculation of constants of motion. The breakdown of these constants is discussed along with some of the implications for fusion systems.

TCT hybrid preconceptual blanket design studies

Description: The conceptual design of a tokamak fusion-fission (hybrid) reactor, which produces electric power and fissile material, has been performed in a cooperative effort between Princeton's Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) and Battelle's Pacific Northwest Laboratories (PNL). PPPL, who had overall project lead responsibility, designed the fusion driver system. Its core consists of a tokamak plasma maintained in the two-component torus (TCT) mode by both D and T beams and having a single null poloidal d… more

Investigation of impurity radiation from a well diganosed, laser heated plasma sample. Final report

Description: The results are described of an experimental and theoretical program designed to measure the relative intensities of line radiation from various ionization stages of carbon and helium impurities added to a deuterium plasma, and to relate the observed line intensity ratios to the plasma temperature. A deuterium sample plasma is produced and heated to a temperature of 2 to 7 eV at an electron density of 5 x 10/sup 16/ cm/sup -3/. The plasma parameters are monitored at various discrete times durin… more

Hydrology and geochemistry of thermal ground water in southwestern Idaho and north-central Nevada

Description: The study area occupies about 14,500 square miles in southwestern Idaho and north-central Nevada. Thermal ground water occurs under artesian conditions, in discontinuous or compartmented zones, in igneous or sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age. Ground-water movement is generally northward. Temperatures of the ground water range from about 30/sup 0/ to more than 80/sup 0/C. Chemical analyses of water from 12 wells and 9 springs indicate that nonthermal waters are a calcium bicarbonate type; therma… more

Design of a continuous duty cryopump

Description: A continuous duty cryopump system was designed and developed that comprises a self-contained cryopump for installation into a vacuum chamber, and a microprocessor controller for automatic operation. This deuterium pump has two units in a single housing, arranged so that one is pumping while the other is being regenerated. Liquid helium-cooled, finned sections in each unit pump deuterium by condensation, and a third pump integral within the cryopump housing collects the regenerated gas. A microp… more

High beta studies on ISX-B with neutral beam injection

Description: Injection of H/sup 0/ into D/sup +/ plasmas with beam power P/sub b/ of up to 1.7 MW has produced rms betas of approx. 4%, volume-averaged betas of approx. 3%, and central betas of approx. 10% in the ISX-B tokamak. Although theoretical calculations indicate that the observed equilibria may be unstable to ballooning modes, no catastrophic loss of confinement has been observed, and beta continues to increase with injection power. In these beam-dominated high-beta discharges the electron and ion e… more

Radially resolved measurements of ''q'' on the ATC tokamak

Description: This paper describes a new technique for directly measuring the safety factor, or q, profile in a tokamak. A tightly collimated neutral beam capable of injecting approximately 100 mA of 30 keV deuterium atoms was mounted on the ATC tokamak. By proper tangential aiming of the beam a strong concentration of circulating fast ions was created at a chosen plasma minor radius. By examining the orbits of these ions with a multi-sight-line charge exchange detector, it was possible to measure the shifts… more

Photodisintegration of /sup 3/H and /sup 3/He. [Threshold to 25 MeV]

Description: The photoneutron cross sections for /sup 3/H and /sup 3/He have been measured from threshold to approx. 25 MeV with monoenergetic photons from the annihilation in flight of fast positrons at the LLL Electron-Positron Linear Accelerator facility. These reactions include the two-body breakup of /sup 3/H and the three-body breakup of both /sup 3/H and /sup 3/He; these measurements for /sup 3/H are the first to span the energy region across the peaks of the cross sections. An efficient BF/sub 3/-tu… more

Some effects on the kinetics of muon-catalyzed fusion

Description: Two important stages in the kinetics of muon-catalyzed d-t fusion are discussed: (1) atomic thermalization and hyperfine-state relaxation preceding molecular formation and (2) muon stripping and x-ray production if sticking occurs after nuclear fusion. Thermalization is accurately treated by Monte Carlo simulation. It is shown that thermalization and triplet quenching of the ..cap alpha mu.. atom may not finish before dt..mu.. formation in low-tritium targets, but that epithermal transients are… more

Health physics aspects of nuclear radiations from deuterium beam injectors

Description: Estimations are made for X-ray generation from the accelerator column of various neutral beam injectors. For the case of deuterium beam operation where 2.5-MeV D-D neutrons pose a serious health physics concern, neutron and tritium production rates from beam targets are calculated for different beam energies. Biological doses from these radiations and shielding requirements are discussed.

Kinetics of the radiation-induced exchange reactions of H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/: a review

Description: Mixtures of H/sub 2/--T/sub 2/ or D/sub 2/--T/sub 2/ will exchange to produce HT or DT due to catalysis by the tritium ..beta.. particle. The kinetics of the reaction D/sub 2/ + T/sub 2/ = 2DT may play an important role in designing liquid or solid targets of D/sub 2/--DT--T/sub 2/ for implosion fusion, and distillation schemes for tritium cleanup systems in fusion reactors. Accordingly, we have critically reviewed the literature for information on the kinetics and mechanism of radiation-induce… more

Explosion potential of neutral-beam source cryopumps for TFTR

Description: The explosion potential of the test cryopump became a paramount issue in the safety analysis required for the reactor experiment. The administrative limit for loading of the cryopump with normal hydrogen or deuterium is that amount of gas which will produce a partial pressure of 13 torr at a total pressure of 1 atmosphere, i.e., a 1.7% mixture by volume. At atmospheric pressure, combustion can occur for mixtures in the range 4.0 to 75%. It is important to know whether, in a leak-up-to-air accid… more

Nuclear spin polarization of solid deuterium-tritium

Description: It appears that parallel alignment of deuteron and triton magnetic moments increases the cross section of the nuclear reaction T(d,n) He/sup 4/ by 50%, thereby promising a laser driver of perhaps half the original energy. Both ''brute-force'' and dynamic nuclear polarization are considered, and the many potential problems of the latter are considered. High nuclear polarization by the dynamic technique requires a small nucleus-to-unpaired electron ratio, a long longitudinal nuclear relaxation ti… more

Low-background measurements of neutron emission from Ti metal in pressurized deuterium gas

Description: A wide variety of neutron detector systems have been used at various research facilities to search for anomalous neutron emission from deuterated metals. Some of these detector systems are summarized here together with possible sources of spurious signals from electronic noise. During the past two years, we have performed experiments to measure neutron emission from pressurized D{sub 2} gas mixed with various forms of titanium metal chips and sponge. Details concerning the neutron detectors, ex… more

Quadrupole mass-filter sensitivities of H/sub 2/, HD, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/, and the kinetics of. beta. -particle induced exchange between H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/ at 25. 4/sup 0/C

Description: We have constructed a quadrupole-mass filter system to measure the equilibrium constants and rates of reaction of the ..beta..-particle-induced exchanges between H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/ at cryogenic temperatures. Even with careful calibration experiments at 25.4/sup 0/C, we could not completely remove the mass discrimination inherent in our method. We estimate the accuracy of our mixture analyses to be +-2.2% in the D/sub 2/-DT-T/sub 2/ system, and +-9% in the H/sub 2/-HT-T/sub 2/ syst… more

Phase Transformations in Alumina. Technical Report, May to December 1961

Description: e transformation studies showed that synthetic aluminas produced in the laboratory were not transformed to alpha alumina at 400 to 700' deg n the presence of nitric acid and water vapor. Amorphous aluminn produced in the pilot plant was transformed to alpha alumina. This indicated that the amorphous alumina produced in the pilot plant is structurally predisposed to form alpha alumina. Most additives did not appear to have any special effects. Lithium formed zeta alumina, LiAl/sub 5/O/sub 8/. Ph… more

SANS (small angle neutron scattering) measurement of deuterium-dislocation correlation in palladium

Description: Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements have been made on deformed polycrystal palladium samples with and without deuterium dissolved in the solution phase ({alpha}) at room temperature. Concentrations were held constant during SANS experiments by an equilibrium gas pressure cell. The difference scattering cross section for the same sample with and without deuterium loading has a 1/Q behavior (Q=4{pi}/{lambda} sin{theta}/2) at intermediate values of Q. At very low values of Q the dep… more

Plasma-Induced Conversion of Surface-Adsorbed Hydrocarbons

Description: Experimental results are reported for an electrical device for direct conversion of methane into higher hydrocarbons. A microchannel plate is excited with electrons from a photoemissive source, and electron impact ionization of methane on the inner surfaces of the microchannels creates an ion feedback process. The resulting low-density plasma creates higher hydrocarbons when charged particles impact the surfaces at grazing incidence. The production Of C{sub 2} to C{sub 8}-containing gases was n… more

Radiation Shielding Design Considerations for Doublet III

Description: Calculations and measurements were made of the bremsstrahlung (x-ray) doses resulting from runaway electron shots at Doublet III. The analysis considered direct, wall-scattered, and skyshine contributions. Reasonably good agreement was obtained between calculations and measurements. The x-ray dose in the control room was about 1 mR per runaway shot, while that at the north boundary was undetectable, with a calculated value of 0.05 mR per shot. These low doses attest to the adequacy of the 2 ft … more

Muon-catalyzed fusion theory: Introduction and review

Description: Muon-catalyzed fusion ({mu}CF) has proved to be a fruitful subject for basic physics research as well as a source of cold nuclear fusion. Experiments have demonstrated that over 100 fusions per muon can be catalyzed by formation of the dt{mu} molecule in mixtures of deuterium and tritium. After a brief review of the subject's history, the dt{mu} catalysis cycle and the principal relations used in its analysis are described. Some of the important processes in the {mu}CF cycle are then discussed.… more

Studies in Hot Atom and Radiation Chemistry Progress Report: September 1977

Description: The reactive scattering of the reaction of the first excited state of C/sup +/ (/sup 4/P) with molecular hydrogen was studied over an energy range of 0.5 to 9.0 eV. The measurements indicate that the reaction proceeded by a direct mechanism and the final product was in the a/sup 3/pi state. The reaction of ground-state C/sup +/(/sup 2/P) with D/sub 2/ and H/sub 2/ was examined over the energy range of 2.5 eV to 28 eV. Over this energy range unambiguous identification of CD/sup +/ in the X/sup 1… more
