Single particle behavior in plasmas

Description: The paper follows the history of a neutral atom or molecule into a plasma--ionization, dissociation, radiation,--until it becomes a set of charged particles moving in the electromagnetic fields of the plasma system. The various useful forms of the method of averaging are displayed and applied to calculation of constants of motion. The breakdown of these constants is discussed along with some of the implications for fusion systems.

High beta studies on ISX-B with neutral beam injection

Description: Injection of H/sup 0/ into D/sup +/ plasmas with beam power P/sub b/ of up to 1.7 MW has produced rms betas of approx. 4%, volume-averaged betas of approx. 3%, and central betas of approx. 10% in the ISX-B tokamak. Radially resolved measurements of ''q'' on the ATC tokamak

Description: This paper describes a new technique for directly measuring the safety factor, or q, profile in a tokamak. A tightly collimated neutral beam capable of injecting approximately 100 mA of 30 keV deuterium atoms was mounted on the ATC tokamak. By proper tangential aiming of the beam a strong concentration of circulating fast ions was created at a chosen plasma minor radius. Some effects on the kinetics of muon-catalyzed fusion

Description: Two important stages in the kinetics of muon-catalyzed d-t fusion are discussed: (1) atomic thermalization and hyperfine-state relaxation preceding molecular formation and (2) muon stripping and x-ray production if sticking occurs after nuclear fusion. Health physics aspects of nuclear radiations from deuterium beam injectors

Description: Estimations are made for X-ray generation from the accelerator column of various neutral beam injectors. For the case of deuterium beam operation where 2.5-MeV D-D neutrons pose a serious health physics concern, neutron and tritium production rates from beam targets are calculated for different beam energies. Biological doses from these radiations and shielding requirements are discussed.

Nuclear spin polarization of solid deuterium-tritium

Low-background measurements of neutron emission from Ti metal in pressurized deuterium gas

Description: We have constructed a quadrupole-mass filter system to measure the equilibrium constants and rates of reaction of the ..beta..-particle-induced exchanges between H/sub 2/, D/sub 2/, and T/sub 2/ at cryogenic temperatures. Even with careful calibration experiments at 25.4/sup 0/C, we could not completely remove the mass discrimination inherent in our method. Phase Transformations in Alumina. Technical Report, May to December 1961

Description: e transformation studies showed that synthetic aluminas produced in the laboratory were not transformed to alpha alumina at 400 to 700' deg n the presence of nitric acid and water vapor. Amorphous aluminn produced in the pilot plant was transformed to alpha alumina. This indicated that the amorphous alumina produced in the pilot plant is structurally predisposed to form alpha alumina. Most additives did not appear to have any special effects. SANS (small angle neutron scattering) measurement of deuterium-dislocation correlation in palladium

Description: Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements have been made on deformed polycrystal palladium samples with and without deuterium dissolved in the solution phase ({alpha}) at room temperature. Concentrations were held constant during SANS experiments by an equilibrium gas pressure cell. Plasma-Induced Conversion of Surface-Adsorbed Hydrocarbons

Description: Experimental results are reported for an electrical device for direct conversion of methane into higher hydrocarbons. A microchannel plate is excited with electrons from a photoemissive source, and electron impact ionization of methane on the inner surfaces of the microchannels creates an ion feedback process. Radiation Shielding Design Considerations for Doublet III

Description: Calculations and measurements were made of the bremsstrahlung (x-ray) doses resulting from runaway electron shots at Doublet III. The analysis considered direct, wall-scattered, and skyshine contributions. Reasonably good agreement was obtained between calculations and measurements. The x-ray dose in the control room was about 1 mR per runaway shot, while that at the north boundary was undetectable, with a calculated value of 0.05 mR per shot. Muon-catalyzed fusion theory: Introduction and review

Description: Muon-catalyzed fusion ({mu}CF) has proved to be a fruitful subject for basic physics research as well as a source of cold nuclear fusion. Experiments have demonstrated that over 100 fusions per muon can be catalyzed by formation of the dt{mu} molecule in mixtures of deuterium and tritium. Studies in Hot Atom and Radiation Chemistry Progress Report: September 1977

Description: The reactive scattering of the reaction of the first excited state of C/sup +/ (/sup 4/P) with molecular hydrogen was studied over an energy range of 0.5 to 9.0 eV. The measurements indicate that the reaction proceeded by a direct mechanism and the final product was in the a/sup 3/pi state. Operation of the repeating pneumatic injector on TFTR and design of an 8-shot deuterium pellet injector

Development of an ion source for long-pulse (30-s) neutral beam injection

Description: This paper describes the development of a long-pulse positive ion source that has been designed to provide high brightness deuterium beams (divergence approx. = 0.25/sup 0/ rms, current density approx. = 0.15 A cm/sup -2/) of 40 to 45 A, at a beam energy of 80 keV, for pulse lengths up to 30 s. Description: The direct energy conversion efficiencies calculated for Cat-D and D-/sup 3/He fueled Tokamak reactors are summarized over a range of reactor designs, collector configurations, assumed T/sub e//T/sub i/ ratios, and power densities.
