Dependence of Thermal Utilization and Resonance Escape Probability Upon Fuel Element Density in D₂O Cooled and Moderated Systems

Description: Abstract: "The effect of variation in fuel element density upon f, p in a D2O cooled and moderated lattice of cylindrical fuel elements is investigated. The CP-3 lattice is chosen as a reference. The effect of a source term in the fuel element is considered. f, p are calculated as functions of "a", the ratio of the modified fuel element density to the original (fuel only) density. Curves showing f(a), p(a) are included. It is concluded that a 1 per cent decrease in the product, f(d), p(a) is no… more

Distribution Coefficient of D₂O Between Triethylamine and Water

Description: Summary: "Water containing 1.8% D2O was distributed between the two liquid phases formed with triethylamine at 20 and 35 C. The triethylamine was removed from each phase by aseotropic distillation with benzene before analyzing the water by determining its density with a quartz float. The ratios of the concentrations of the D2O in the water layer to that in the amino layer were 1.007 and 1.004 at 20 and 35, respectfully. The differences from unity are about the same as the errors of analysis."

Buckling Measurements : Heavy Natural Uranium Tubular Fuel Assemblies

Description: One-region buckling measurements that were made on a series of D/sub 2/O- moderated lattices of heavy uranium metal tubes in the Process Development Pile at Savannah River Laboratory are presented. The purposes of these measurements are to provide normalization points for lattice bucklings and to extend the study of natural uranium- D/sub 2/O systems. The dependence of buckiing on the moderator-to-fuel ratio is studied for two types of lattices.

Isotopic Purification of Tritium by Electrolysis

Description: From abstract: "An electrolytic refining process was developed to produce tritium of high isotopic purity with negligible loss. The operation is semicontinuous, with multiple stages in cascade. All tritium oxide is handled within the confines of a hermetically sealed enclosure. The mechanical operability of the process was demonstrated in a five-stage prototype line designed to process 15 gram-mols of feed per day. An average separation factor per stage of 5.3 was obtained with a feed of tracer… more

High Temperature Water as an Etch and Clean for SiO2 and Si3N4

Description: An environmentally friendly, and contamination free process for etching and cleaning semiconductors is critical to future of the IC industry. Under the right conditions, water has the ability to meet these requirements. Water becomes more reactive as a function of temperature in part because the number of hydronium and hydroxyl ions increase. As water approaches its boiling point, the concentration of these species increases over seven times their concentrations at room temperature. At 150 °C, … more

Measurements of Bucklings and Diffusion Coefficient Changes in D2O Moderated Lattices of Tubular UO2 Assemblies

Description: Diffusion coefficients and bucklings are measured for UO/sub 2/ fuel tube assemblies in D/sub 2/O moderated lattices. The effects of H/sub 2/O fogs and air in the coolant channels in place of D/sub 2/O are studied.

Photoneutrons in the ISHR

Description: While the effect of photoneutrons from the gamma - n reactions in D2O will probably be small in the ISHR, it may be greater than the effect in the HRE because of the greater amount of deuterium present. Since the fuel of the ISHR is a D2O solution of uranyl sulfate, it is desirable to have an estimate of the possible effect of these photoneutrons so that proper allowances can be made in in the design calculations.
