Determination of Submicron Particle Sized by an Activation Analysis - Centrifugation Method

Description: The feasibility of determining particle sizes in the submicron range by employing an activation analysis - centrifugation method has been demonstrated. It is believed that this method is now applicable to the analysis of thorium oxide for submicron particles. The same techniques are, in most instance, usable in determining particle sized in other sample materials.

Politics in Uniforms: Military Influence in Politics and Conflictual State Behavior

Description: This dissertation examines how the state-building process relates to civil-military relations and how political influence of the military affects state's conflict behavior. By doing so, this study aims to introduce a nuanced consideration of the well-known civil-military problematique, which might be summarized as the threat the military can constitute to the polity that it is created to protect. I treat this paradox by addressing the following research questions: Why do some militaries have a … more

What Type of Follower Will I Be? Leader Behavior and the Motivational Processes Underlying Follower Role Orientation

Description: In a society fixated on leaders, where does that leave followers? Followership highlights the follower in the leadership process, examines who are followers, and explores how and why people follow. Much of the existing literature on followership has focused on classifying followers into follower types. However, less is known about why an employee might enact a particular follower role. The purpose of this dissertation is to understand how leaders influence the likelihood that followers to en… more

Survive or Thrive? 10th Graders' Parental Involvement and Its Influences on Early Adult Life

Description: To find out how adolescents' individual and environmental factors impact adulthood education and employment outcomes, this longitudinal study examined 10th graders' individual (such as math scores, intrinsic motivation, and school engagement) and environmental (i.e. parental involvement) factors through their education and employment outcomes in emerging adulthood. The current study examined the differentiated effect of parental involvement being autonomy-supportive or control on adolescents' … more

Analytical Chemistry Division Semiannual Progress Report For Period Ending October 20, 1955

Description: The development of ionic methods for the determination of corrosive products in the highly radioactive Homogeneous Reactor (HR) fuels has been of major interest in the work of the Ionic Analyses Laboratory. Methods for the spectrophotometric determination of aluminum and for the polarographic determination of iron in HR fuels have been developed. The polarographic determination of molybdenum in uranyl sulfate solutions was studied. A polarographic method for the determination of zinc was develo… more

Equitable Educational Planning: Embracing Open Educational Resources for the Post-Pandemic Era

Description: This article explores the post-pandemic landscape and how increasing Open Educational Resources (OER), Open Access (OA), and removing access barriers could increase equity by establishing the ability for teaching/learning to continue for all, regardless of the ability to attend a brick-and-mortar building and regardless of socio-economic status. The authors examine the consequences of current iniquities through the lens of self-determination theory (SDT).

Determination of Particle Size Distribution by X-Ray Absorption

Description: "As it is frequently necessary to know the distribution of particle sizes in various products used in industrial applications, a number of means have been devised for these determinations. Some of them include direct microscopic measurement, screening of product, extraction of samples from a settling slurry as with the Andreasen pipette, air and liquid elutriation, adsorption of gases and liquids, and light absorption."

Ethnic Groups and Institutions: Can Autonomy and Party Bans Reduce Ethnic Conflict?

Description: Can institutions successfully reduce ethnic conflict? Institutions such as autonomy and federalism are often advocated as a means to prevent ethnic conflict, however empirical evidence is largely mixed with regards to their effectiveness. In a similar manner, political parties have begun to receive more scholarly attention in determining their relationship with ethnic conflict, but their evidence is also mixed. In this research I examine autonomy, federalism, and the banning of political partie… more

Student Experiences, Struggles, and Supports in an Alternative School Setting

Description: Experiences of shame, such as feelings of failure, scorn, ridicule, and embarrassment, all impact a student's successful mastery of academic skills. To identify and understand the shame experiences that impact a student's success, as told from the student's perspective, and determine which factors contribute most to student success, the lenses of the shame resiliency theory and self-determination theory were utilized. This phenomenological qualitative research study explored the struggles ass… more

Assessing Self-Determination Inventory: Validity for Students with Disabilities and Typically Developing Students

Description: Students' self-determination (SD) can positively influence their ability to make choices in planning for their future. The current study is a preliminary validity study on the most recent 21-item version of Shogren and Wehmeyer's Self-Determination Inventory: Student Report (SDI-SR). The SDI-SR was administered to 316 students (ages 13-22) and results were examined with exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results of the EFA on a 7-factor solution (TLI = 0.9… more

Self-Efficacy and Competence: A Physical Activity Experimental Comparison

Description: Sedentary behavior has been shown to lead to overweight and obesity, which are risk factors for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular heart diseases (CHD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Two constructs have been used to attempt to enhance motivation in order to promote long-term physical activity behavior change: self-efficacy (from Self-Efficacy Theory) and competence (from Self-Determination Theory). Though these constructs are from two different theories and purportedly measure two different… more
