Electrochemistry of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans reactions with pyrite

Description: The objective of this project is to provide the fundamental information on the mechanisms of bacterial leaching of pyrite. The knowledge of how bacterial leaching of pyrite functions is essential for design and development of a technology for coal cleaning with bacteria. The features of major electrochemical techniques will be examined to find out if any of them can provide a diagnostic information on the mechanisms of related reactions.

Hot gas desulfurization with oxides of zinc, iron, and vanadium

Description: The objective of this study is to develop an improved sorbent which can reduce H{sub 2}S levels up to 1 ppmv or less, which can stabilize zinc, and produce economically recoverable amounts of elemental sulfur during regeneration. For this purpose, the desulfurization performance of sorbents prepared by the addition of various amounts of V{sub 2}O{sub 5} to the zinc ferrite sorbent is investigated.

LIFAC Sorbent Injection Desulfurization Demonstration Project

Development of the chemical and electrochemical coal cleaning process

Description: Studies concerning the use of flotation as an alternative method of separating liberated mineral matter from chemical/electrochemical coal cleaning (CECC) treated coal were continued using Elkhorn No. 3 coal. The results obtained using different methods of recovering the clean product after CECC treatment showed trends similar to those observed previously with Pittsburgh No. 8 coal. Description: The sulfation rate of reagent-grade monocalcium silicate is of the same order of magnitude as that of limestone and higher than that of reagent-grade calcium oxide. It has been confirmed that the sulfated monocalcium silicate is more regenerable than the sulfated lime, i.e., the regeneration rate is higher with the silicate. Description: Bench-scale and pilot-scale experiments have been conducted to measure the mass transfer and kinetic rates at simulated duct injection conditions.
