Tapered fluidized-bed bioreactor: an improved device for continuous cultivation

Description: The bioreactor concept utilizing a tapered fluidized bed has shown considerable promise for use in bioprocesses where the biological agents can be immobilized on a fluidizable solid phase, but the operating characteristics of such a reactor are not yet fully understood. A novel carbon-based process for flue gas cleanup

Description: The objective of this project is to demonstrate the preliminary technical and economic feasibility of a novel carbon-based process for removal of at least 95% SO{sub 2} and at least 75% NO{sub x} coal combustion flue gas. Thermodynamics of the hydrodenitrogenation of carbazole

Description: A thermodynamic analysis, based on accurate experimental Gibbs energies of formation, was completed for the key hydrogen-consuming steps in the HDN reaction network for carbazole. The results were compared with literature reaction studies. The concept of crossover temperature'' is shown to be a valuable tool in the interpretation of literature reaction-study results. Ancillary effects of selected acid deposition control policies

Description: NAPAP is examining a number of potential ways to reduce the precursors (sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides) to acid deposition. However, the policies to reduce acid deposition will have other physical, biological and economic effects unrelated to acid deposition. Biological processes for environmental control of effluent streams in the nuclear fuel cycle. [Denitrification; removal of heavy metals]

Description: Nitrates and radioactive heavy metals need to be removed from aqueous effluent streams in the fuel cycle. Biological methods are being developed for reducing nitrate or nitrite to N/sub 2/ gas and for decreasing dissolved metal concentration to less than 1 g/m/sup 3/. Development program on pressurized fluidized-bed combustion. Annual report, July 1, 1974--June 30, 1975

Description: The feasibility of using fluidized-bed combustors in power and steam plants is being evaluated. The concept involves burning fuels such as coal in a fluidized bed of either a naturally occurring, calcium-containing limestone or dolomite or in a synthetically prepared calcium-containing stone.
