Superconductor procurement and R and D for SSC

Description: We describe the results of superconductor procurements for SSC dipole model magnets. Most results will pertain to LBL procurements for the LBL-BNL collaboration; however, where appropriate to complete the SSC data base, reference will be made to material purchased by FNAL and TAC. Also, most of the results to be presented will relate to the conventional SSC conductors, i.e., with filament sizes in the range of 15 to 25 ..mu..m. Some information on fine filament NbTi material, such as quantities… more

Magnetically scanned ion beams for radiation therapy

Description: The advantageous physical characteristics of slowing-down and stopping charged particle ion beams have been demonstrated to be highly desirable for application to radiation therapy. Specifically, the prospect of concentrating the dose delivered into a sharp-defined treatment volume while keeping to a minimum the total dose to tissues outside this volume is most appealing, offering very significant improvements over what is possible with established radiation therapy techniques. Key to achieving… more

State of Rhode Island No. 2 heating oil data collection program. Final report, August 27, 1979-May 22, 1980

Description: A one-time survey of the approximately 250 No. 2 fuel oil retail dealers in the state of Rhode Island was conducted by the Governor's Energy Office during July and August of 1979. The information that was sought included name of supplier(s), storage capacity, number of customers, historic deliveries and historic inventories. The total number of dealers who responded to each question ranged between 39 and 190. While the participation was somewhat limited, the survey nevertheless provided the Ene… more

Gas-field deliverability forecasting: A coupled reservoir simulator and surface facilities model

Description: To determine if a gas contract can be satisified now and in the future, it is necessary to forecast the performance of the gas reservoir, the gas inflow into the sandface, the multiphase pressure losses in the wellbore and gathering system and the field facilities. Surface production models which rigorously model from the sandface to the plant gate are available. However, these surface packages model reservoirs simply, in most cases as tank-type reservoirs. Comprehensive 3 dimensional reservoir… more

Design of Accumulator and Compressor Rings for the Project-X Based Proton Driver

Description: A Muon Collider (MC) and a Neutrino Factory (NF) - which may be considered as a step towards a MC - both require a high-power ({approx}4 MW) proton driver providing short (<1 m r.m.s. length) bunches for muon production. However, the driver repetition rates required for these two machines are different: {approx}15 Hz for MC and {approx}60 Hz for NF. This difference suggests employing two separate rings: one for accumulation of the proton beam from the Project-X linac in a few (e.g. 4) long b… more

Seaborne Delivery Interdiction of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Description: Over the next 10-20 years, the probability of a terrorist attack using a weapon of mass destruction (WMD) on the United States is projected to increase. At some point over the next few decades, it may be inevitable that a terrorist group will have access to a WMD. The economic and social impact of an attack using a WMD anywhere in the world would be catastrophic. For weapons developed overseas, the routes of entry are air and sea with the maritime vector as the most porous. Providing a system t… more

Review: engineering particles using the aerosol-through-plasma method

Description: For decades, plasma processing of materials on the nanoscale has been an underlying enabling technology for many 'planar' technologies, particularly virtually every aspect of modern electronics from integrated-circuit fabrication with nanoscale elements to the newest generation of photovoltaics. However, it is only recent developments that suggest that plasma processing can be used to make 'particulate' structures of value in fields, including catalysis, drug delivery, imaging, higher energy de… more

CERTS Microgrid Laboratory Test Bed

Description: The objective of the CERTS Microgrid Test Bed project was to enhance the ease of integrating energy sources into a microgrid. The project accomplished this objective by developing and demonstrating three advanced techniques, collectively referred to as the CERTS Microgrid concept, that significantly reduce the level of custom field engineering needed to operate microgrids consisting of generating sources less than 100kW. The techniques comprising the CERTS Microgrid concept are: 1 a method for … more

Energy Savings Potential of Flexible and Adaptive HVAC Distribution Systems for Office Buildings

Description: It has been understood by architects and engineers that office buildings with easily re-configurable space and flexible mechanical and electrical systems are able to provide comfort that increases worker productivity while using less energy. Raised floors are an example of how fresh air, thermal conditioning, lighting needs, and network access can be delivered in a flexible manner that is not ''embedded'' within the structure. What are not yet documented is how well these systems perform and ho… more
