Defining and testing a granular continuum element

Description: Continuum mechanics relies on the fundamental notion of amesoscopic volume "element" in which properties averaged over discreteparticles obey deterministic relationships. Recent work on granularmaterials suggests a continuum law may be inapplicable, revealinginhomogeneities at the particle level, such as force chains and slow cagebreaking. Here, we analyze large-scale Discrete-Element Method (DEM)simulations of different granular flows and show that a "granularelement" can indeed be defined at … more

Proposal for irradiating a test fuel element with fluted outer surface: GEH 10-67 and GEH 10-68

Description: The fuel element for the test described in this report has been designed to extend the total exposure capability of metallic uranium fuel by altering the type of cladding deformations produced by uranium swelling. In a tabular fuel element of cylindrical geometry, irradiation-induced uranium swelling can cause splitting of the outer clad or buckling of the inner clad. With a fluted outer surface on a cylindrical element, a large amount of swelling may be accommodated by bending of the exterior … more

Post-irradiation examination of bumper elements with high in-reactor weight losses (RM-418)

Description: This report discusses three natural uranium, X-8001 aluminum clad, I&E Hanford production fuel elements, which were irradiated in 3363-D as part of PT-IP-262-A, were selected for detailed examination in the Radiometallurgy Laboratory. The three pieces were from the same tube and each had lost about 15 grams of cladding during irradiation. Examination was requested to determine the extent of the corrosion and whether the attack was uniform or localized. Also, measurement of the uranium fuel was … more

Interim report on the creepdown of Zircaloy fuel cladding

Description: This report describes the creepdown phenomenon in Zircaloy fuel cladding and the methods by which it will be measured and analyzed. Instrumentation for monitoring radial deformation in the cladding is described in detail--in terms of theory, design, and stability. The programs that control the microcomputer are listed, both to document the level of sophistication of the instrumentation and to indicate the flexibility of the test equipment.

PASSIVE DETECTION OF VEHICLE LOADING

Description: The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Laboratory (DIRS) at the Rochester Institute of Technology, along with the Savannah River National Laboratory is investigating passive methods to quantify vehicle loading. The research described in this paper investigates multiple vehicle indicators including brake temperature, tire temperature, engine temperature, acceleration and deceleration rates, engine acoustics, suspension response, tire deformation and vibrational response. Our investigation into t… more

Fast Laser Excitation and Ultrahigh Strain-Rate Deformation

Description: Phase evolution induced by single or repeated excitation with energetic femtosecond laser pulses is examined. Of primary interest is the solidification behavior of pure metals at deep undercoolings and self-organization in simple eutectic alloys. Time resolved measurements using third harmonic generation (THG) of light and ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) are employed to elucidate several issues related to fast laser excitation, including heat transport by ballistic and diffusional electron… more

Land subsidence in the Cerro Prieto Geothermal Field, 1 Baja California, Mexico, from 1994 to 2005. An integrated analysis of DInSAR, levelingand geological data.

Description: Cerro Prieto is the oldest and largest Mexican geothermal field in operation and has been producing electricity since 1973. The large amount of geothermal fluids extracted to supply steam to the power plants has resulted in considerable deformation in and around the field. The deformation includes land subsidence and related ground fissuring and faulting. These phenomena have produced severe damages to infrastructure such as roads, irrigation canals and other facilities. In this paper, the tech… more

Nonlinear frequency analysis of porous Bi directional functionally graded beams utilizing reddy shear deformation theory

Description: Article describes how the nonlinear frequency response of bi-directional functionally graded porous beams experienced range of various end conditions is investigated in this work. The findings are presented to aid in future research into the effects of various gradient indices, vibration amplitude ratios, porosity coefficients, shear and elastic substrate parameters, boundary conditions, and vibration frequencies on the bi-directional functionally graded beams.

Modeling of frequency doubling and tripling with converter refractive index spatial non-uniformities due to gravitational sag

Description: Accurate predictions of the performance of frequency conversion requires knowledge of the spatial variation of departures from the phase-matching condition in the converter crystals. This variation is caused by processes such as crystal growth and crystal surface finishing. Gravitational sag and mounting configurations also lead to deformation and stresses which cause spatially varying departures from the phase-matching condition. We have modeled the effect of gravitational forces on conversion… more

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation on the Low Temperature Properties of the NbCr{sub 2} Laves Phase

Description: This is the final report of a three-year, Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The goal of the project was to develop methodologies in which to define and improve the properties of NbCr{sub 2} so that the high temperature structural applications of alloys based upon this would not be limited by the low-temperature brittle behavior of the intermetallic. We accomplished this task by (1) understanding the defect structure and deforma… more

Final Report: Hardening and Strain Localization in Single and Polycrystalline Materials Under Cyclic and Monotonic Deformation, January 11, 1985 - July 31, 1997

Description: The subject program on substructure evolution initially focused on strain localization produced by fatigue cycling and especially how such localization affects the cyclic response of polycrystalline pure metal. The latter stages have dealt with strain localization in the heavy monotonic deformation of alloys, which eventually produces forms of localized deformation that include coarse slip bands (CSB's), which are aligned to slip planes and macroscopic shear bands (MSB's), which are not aligned… more

Analysis of compression behavior of a [011] Ta single crystal with orientation imaging microscopy and crystal plasticity

Description: High-purity tantalum single crystal cylinders oriented with [011] parallel to the cylinder axis were deformed 10, 20, and 30 percent in compression. The engineering stress-strain curve exhibited an up-turn at strains greater than {approximately}20% while the samples took on an ellipsoidal shape during testing, elongated along the [100] direction with almost no dimensional change along [0{bar 1}1]. Two orthogonal planes were selected for characterization using Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM… more

Experimental investigations of material models for Ti-6A1-4V and 2024-T3

Description: This report describes studies of the deformation and failure behavior of Ti-6Al-4V and 2024-T3 aluminum. Data was obtained at high strain rates and large strains using the split Hopkinson pressure bar technique. This information, plus additional data from the literature, was used to critically evaluate the ability of the Johnson Cook material model to represent the deformation and failure response of Ti-6AMV and 2024-T3 under conditions relevant to simulations of engine containment and the infl… more
