Optimal Blending Quality

Description: This paper discusses a functional program developed for product blending. The program is installed at a Savannah River Plant production site on their VAX computer. A wide range of blending choices is available. The program can be easily changed or expanded. The technology can be applied at other areas where mixing or blending is done.

Choosing a document-formatting system

Description: The TeX system is chosen for formatting large computer code manuals to be initially implemented on VAX 11/780 and 8600 computers. The ''What You See Is What You Get'' word processor is recommended for producing small (5 to 10 page) reports and manuals and WordMARC is the preferred formatter in those situations. (DWL)

Computer networking at FERMILAB

Description: Management aspects of data communications facilities at Fermilab are described. Local area networks include Ferminet, a broadband CATV system which serves as a backbone-type carrier for high-speed data traffic between major network nodes; micom network, four Micom Micro-600/2A port selectors via private twisted pair cables, dedicated telephone circuits, or Micom 800/2 statistical multiplexors; and Decnet/Ethernet, several small local area networks which provide host-to-host communications for about 35 VAX computers systems. Wide area (off site) computer networking includes an off site Micom network which provides access to all of Fermilab's computer systems for 10 universities via leased lines or modem; Tymnet, used by many European and Japanese collaborations: Physnet, used for shared data processing task communications by large collaborations of universities; Bitnet, used for file transfer, electronic mail, and communications with CERN; and Mfenet, for access to supercomputers. NESD CAE facility minimal implementation plan (June 1982)

Description: In conjunction with other divisions in the EE Department, the Nuclear Energy Systems Division is developing a Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) capability. Some of our needs in areas such as drafting, PC design, and IC design can be satisfied with existing turnkey systems. Many of our other needs, including modeling, analysis, document management and communication, software development, project management, and project communication will require the gradual development of an expanded computing environment. The purpose of this document is to describe our initial plans to implement a CAE facility.

Interactive benchmark comparison between a VAX 11/780 and a VAX 11/782

Description: In this paper, we present the results of a benchmark comparison between a single processor VAX 11/780 and a dual processor VAX 11/782. Using the VMS Monitor utility and available accounting data, we first parameterized the workload on the VAX 11/782. We developed synthetic scripts that matched both the current workload parameters and also generated four forecasted workloads. Using a remote terminal emulator (RTE), we submitted interactive user commands from the scripts to the single and dual processor VAXs. Response times were then measured as a function of script category and VAX model.

VAXMATH: a mathematical software library for the VAX

Description: VAXMATH is a large collection of mathematical software for the VAX, based in large part upon the SLATEC Library. Routines in the library represent the state-of-the-art in numerical mathematics and have been thourghly tested. The library is characterized by the inclusion of many easy-to-use routines, the use of a standard error handler, and machine readable documentation. Specific information on how to obtain the software is available.

Computer workstation speeds

Description: This report compares the performance of several computers. Some of the machines are discontinued, and some are anticipated, but most are currently installed at Sandia Laboratories. All the computers are personal workstations or departmental servers, except for comparison, one is a Cray C90 mainframe supercomputer (not owned by the Laboratories). A few of the computers have multiple processors, but parallelism is not tested. The time to run three programs is reported for every computer. Unlike many benchmarks, these are complete application programs. They were written and are used at Sandia Laboratories. Also SPECmarks are reported for many computers. These are industry standard performance ratings. They are in general agreement with the speeds of running the Sandia programs. This report concludes with some background material and notes about specific manufacturers.

Neutral particle beam distributed data acquisition system

Description: A distributed data acquisition system has been designed to support experiments at the Argonne Neutral Particle Beam Accelerator. The system uses a host VAXstation II/GPX computer acting as an experimenter's station linked via Ethernet with multiple MicroVAX IIs and rtVAXs dedicated to acquiring data and controlling hardware at remote sites. This paper describes the hardware design of the system, the applications support software on the host and target computers, and the real-time performance.

Software for device-independent graphical input

Description: A three-level model and a graphics software structure based on the model that was developed with the goal of making graphical applications independent of the input devices are described. The software structure makes graphical applications independent of the input devices in a manner similar to the way the SIGGRAPH CORE proposal makes them independent of the output devices. A second goal was to provide a convenient means for application programmers to specify the user-input language for their applications. The software consists of an input handler and a table-driven parser. The input handler manages a CORE-like event queue, changing input events into terminal symbols and making their terminal symbols available to the parser in a uniform manner. It also removes most device dependencies. The parser is table driven from a Backus-Naur form (BNF) grammer that specifies the user-input language. The lower level grammar rules remove the remaining device dependencies from the input, and the higher level grammar rules specify legal sentences in the user-input language. Implementation of this software is on a table-top minicomputer. Experience with retrofitting existing applications indicates that one can find a grammar that removes essentially all the device dependencies from the application proper.

Cray/VAX interactive graphics system

Description: A new graphics system has been brought into production at Los Alamos National Laboratory that interfaces under codes running on the Cray-1 computers with an Evans and Sutherland Multi Picture System high-speed, high-resolution graphics workstation. The system is described from three points of view: hardware, software, and software functions. Special emphasis is placed on the use of detached processes, global sections, and event flag communication.

Database transfers between several systems. [FRAMIS and DATATRIEVE]

Description: The ability to transfer databases between systems allows the user to exploit the best features of either system. This paper addresses beginning Datatrieve users and deals with the issues involved in a transfer of a database from a central computing area to a PDP-11 at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. FRAMIS was used to clean the original database; DATATRIEVE was used to establish the new database. The new database residing on the PDP-11 was subject to structural change at any time.

LSI-11/Motorola microcomputer-development system

Description: A microcomputer development system was built using an RT-11 operating system and a cross assembler in developing a Motorola MC6801-L1 microcomputer-based stepping-motor controller to work with an LSI-11 host computer. The advantage of this technique is that we can use the familiar LSI-11 hardware and the powerful RT-11 operating system software for other microcomputer development. This paper describes how the technique works and its use in developing the stepping-motor controller.

Remote procedure execution software for distributed systems

Description: Remote Procedure Execution facilitates the construction of distributed software systems, spanning computers of various types. Programmers who use the RPX package specify subroutine calls which are to be executed on a remote computer. RPX is used to generate code for dummy routines which transmit input parameters and receive output parameters, as well as a main program which receives procedure call requests, calls the requested procedure, and returns the result. The package automatically performs datatype conversions and uses an appropriate connection oriented protocol. Supported operating systems/processors are VMS(VAX), UNIX(MIPS R2000, R3000) and Software Components Group's pSOS (680x0). Connection oriented protocols are supported over Ethernet (TCP/IP) and RS232 (a package of our own design). 2 refs., 2 figs.

RATFOR: user's guide. [Preprocessor allowing structured control statements and free form input]

Description: RATFOR is a preprocessor for Fortran that allows the programmer to use structured control statements and free form input. This manual describes a version of RATFOR developed at Sandia National Laboratories that has a number of enhancements over the original version developed at Bell Laboratories.

A multiple node software development environment

Description: Experimenters on over 30 DECnet nodes at Fermilab use software developed, distributed, and maintained by the Data Acquisition Software Group. A general methodology and set of tools have been developed to distribute, use and manage the software on different sites. The methodology and tools are of interest to any group developing and using software on multiple nodes.

Portable database driven control system for SPEAR

Description: The new computer control system software for SPEAR is presented as a transfer from the PEP system. Features of the target ring (SPEAR) such as symmetries, magnet groupings, etc., are all contained in a design file which is read by both people and computer. People use it as documentation; a program reads it to generate the database structure, which becomes the center of communication for all the software. Geometric information, such as element positions and lengths, and CAMAC I/O routing information is entered into the database as it is developed. Since application processes refer only to the database and since they do so only in generic terms, almost all of this software (representing more then fifteen man years) is transferred with few changes. Operator console menus (touchpanels) are also transferred with only superficial changes for the same reasons. The system is modular: the CAMAC I/O software is all in one process; the menu control software is a process; the ring optics model and the orbit model are separate processes, each of which runs concurrently with about 15 others in the multiprogramming environment of the VAX/VMS operating system. 10 refs., 1 fig.

Implementation and optimization of portable standard LISP for the CRAY

Description: Portable Standard LISP (PSL), a dialect of LISP developed at the University of Utah, has been implemented on the CRAY-1s and CRAY X-MPs at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and at the National Magnetic Fusion Energy Computer Center at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This implementation was developed using a highly portable model and then tuned for the Cray architecture. The speed of the resulting system is quite impressive, and the environment is very good for symbolic processing. 5 refs.

ETHERNET data-acquisition and control system

ICAMS: a new system for automated emulsion data acquisition and analysis

Description: ICAMS (Interactive Computer Assisted Measurement System) is designed to permit the acquisition and analysis of emulsion scan and measurement data at a rate much faster than any existing manual techniques. It accomplishes this by taking the burden of stage motion control and data recording away from the scanner and putting it onto the computer. It is a modern distributed network system, where a central PDP-11 computer running under RSX-11M V4 communicates with two-ported UNIBUS memory; each two-ported memory resides on the local intelligence of each independent ODS (Optical Data Station). The intelligence of each ODS is a 6512 microcomputer running under FORTH and enhanced with a floating point processor card. Each ODS is supported on ICAMS using the virtual memory features of FORTH, permitting full access to the disk storage facilities of the PDP system. To the scanner, each ODS is conversational and menu driven. To the physicist, utilities have been written that permit FORTRAN-77 programs to easily acquire and thus analyze the data base on the PDP-11.

SAMPLE: software for VAX FORTRAN execution timing

Description: SAMPLE is a set of subroutines in use at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for collecting CPU timings of various FORTRAN program sections - usually individual subroutines. These measurements have been useful in making programs run faster. The presentation includes a description of the software and examples of its use. The software is available on the directory (SAMPLE) of the VAX SIG tape.

Design, implementation, and operation of a class based batch queue scheduler for VAX/VMS

Description: Fermilab found that the standard VMS batch configuration options were inadequate for the job mix that exists on the Fermilab central computer facility VAX cluster. Accordingly, Fermilab designed and implemented a class based batch queue scheduler. This scheduler makes use of the standard VMS job controller and batch system. Users interact with the scheduler at job submission time by specification of CPU time limits and batch job characteristics. This scheduler allows Fermilab to make efficient use of our large heterogeneous VAX cluster which contains machines ranging from a VAX 780 to a VAX 8800. The scheduler was implemented using the VMS system services $GETQUI and $SNDJBC, without changes to the existing VMS job scheduler. As a result, the scheduler should remain compatible with future VMS versions. This session will discuss the design goals, implementation, and operational experience with Fermilab's class based batch queue scheduler.

Praxis input/output interface

Description: This document is intended as an introduction to the use of RMS facilities via Praxis (this interface hereafter called Praxis-RMS). It is presumed that the reader is familiar with Praxis conventions as well as with RMS use (at the MACRO level). Since Praxis-RMS was designed to be functionally equivalent to MACRO-RMS, the explanations follow the pattern of the DEC MACRO-RMS documentation (particularly the programmer's reference manual). A complete list of the procedures that make up Praxis-RMS appears at the end of this document (with parameters), along with the constants (grouped by type) that can be used as actual parameters.
