An analysis of the normal accelerations and airspeeds of a four-engine airplane type in postwar commercial transport operations on trans-Pacific and Caribbean-South American routes

Description: Report presenting an analysis of normal-acceleration and airspeed data on several transport airplanes of a four-engine type during postwar commerical operations on trans-Pacific and Caribbean-South American routes of the same airlines. The results indicate that the acceleration increment corresponding to the limit-gust-load-factor increment may be exceed about twice in all of the flight miles for each route. Results regarding accelerations, flight loads, gust encounters, and speeds are provided.

Water Data Report: An Annotated Bibliography

Description: This report and its accompanying Microsoft Excel workbooksummarize water data we found to support efforts of the EnvironmentalProtection Agency s WaterSense program. WaterSense aims to extend theoperating life of water and wastewater treatment facilities and prolongthe availability of water resourcesby reducing residential andcommercial water consumption through the voluntary replacement ofinefficient water-using products with more efficient ones. WaterSense hasan immediate need for water consumption data categorized by sector and,for the residential sector, per capita data available by region. Thisinformation will assist policy makers, water and wastewater utilityplanners, and others in defining and refining program possibilities.Future data needs concern water supply, wastewater flow volumes, waterquality, and watersheds. This report focuses primarily on the immediateneed for data regarding water consumption and product end-use. We found avariety of data on water consumption at the national, state, andmunicipal levels. We also found several databases related towater-consuming products. Most of the data are available in electronicform on the Web pages of the data-collecting organizations. In addition,we found national, state, and local data on water supply, wastewater, water quality, and watersheds.

An analysis of acceleration, airspeed, and gust-velocity data from a four-engine transport airplane in operations on an eastern United States route

Description: Report presenting time-history data obtained by the NACA VGH recorder from a model of a four-engine civil transport airplane during operations on an eastern United States route in order to determine magnitude and frequency of occurrence of gusts, gust accelerations, and associated airspeeds. The results are compared with results from two similar operations. The gust-load history for the operation was more severe than that for the other two operations.

The Target Data Breach: Frequently Asked Questions

Description: This report answers some frequently asked questions about the Target (store) data breach, including what is known to have happened in the breach, and what costs may result. It also examines some of the broader issues common to data breaches, including how the payment system works, how cybersecurity costs are shared and allocated within the payment system, who bears the losses in such breaches more generally, what emerging cybersecurity technologies may help prevent them, and what role the government could play in encouraging their adoption, as well as some of the legislation that the 113th Congress has introduced to deal with these issues.

Methods for Data-based Delineation of Spatial Regions

Description: In data analysis, it is often useful to delineate or segregate areas of interest from the general population of data in order to concentrate further analysis efforts on smaller areas. Three methods are presented here for automatically generating polygons around spatial data of interest. Each method addresses a distinct data type. These methods were developed for and implemented in the sample planning tool called Visual Sample Plan (VSP). Method A is used to delineate areas of elevated values in a rectangular grid of data (raster). The data used for this method are spatially related. Although VSP uses data from a kriging process for this method, it will work for any type of data that is spatially coherent and appears on a regular grid. Method B is used to surround areas of interest characterized by individual data points that are congregated within a certain distance of each other. Areas where data are “clumped” together spatially will be delineated. Method C is used to recreate the original boundary in a raster of data that separated data values from non-values. This is useful when a rectangular raster of data contains non-values (missing data) that indicate they were outside of some original boundary. If the original boundary is not delivered with the raster, this method will approximate the original boundary.

Planning for Quality Data

Description: The assurance of data quality can be a complex process requiring careful planning. The planning process described in this paper uses Data Quality Objectives as the foundation. The described process considers three steps: project requirement identification, definition of the information necessary to answer the questions, and data collection and management. Since sufficient levels of documentation are required at all levels, uncertainty analysis, traceability and custody, data maintenance, and data evaluation and review are also discussed.
