Wireless Mine-Wide Telecommunications Technology, Quarterly Report: October - December 2002

Description: We added data transmission to the through-the-earth communications system using quadrature synchronous detection. The results are adequate for computer-to-computer communication as well as for sensor data transmission. We added a feature to the in-mine communications system that allows a person to call an individual, rather than broadcasting, by dialing an identification number before speaking.

Analysis of operations and cyber security policies for a system of cooperating Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) devices.

Description: Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices are installed on electric power transmission lines to stabilize and regulate power flow. Power lines protected by FACTS devices can increase power flow and better respond to contingencies. The University of Missouri Rolla (UMR) is currently working on a multi-year project to examine the potential use of multiple FACTS devices distributed over a large power system region in a cooperative arrangement in which the FACTS devices work together to optimize and stabilize the regional power system. The report describes operational and security challenges that need to be addressed to employ FACTS devices in this way and recommends references, processes, technologies, and policies to address these challenges.

The RHIC real time data link system

Description: The RHIC Real Time Data Link (RTDL) System distributes to all locations around the RHIC ring machine parameters of general interest to accelerator systems and users. The system, along with supporting host interface, is centrally located. The RTDL System is comprised of two module types: the Encoder Module (V105) and the Input Module (V106). There is only one V105 module, but many (up to 128) Input Modules. Multiple buffered outputs are provided for use locally or for retransmission to other RHIC equipment locations. Machine parameters are generated from the V115 Waveform Generator Module (WFG) or from machine hardware and coupled directly through a fiber optic serial link to one of the V106 input channels.

Surety of the nation`s critical infrastructures: The challenge restructuring poses to the telecommunications sector

Description: The telecommunications sector plays a pivotal role in the system of increasingly connected and interdependent networks that make up national infrastructure. An assessment of the probable structure and function of the bit-moving industry in the twenty-first century must include issues associated with the surety of telecommunications. The term surety, as used here, means confidence in the acceptable behavior of a system in both intended and unintended circumstances. This paper outlines various engineering approaches to surety in systems, generally, and in the telecommunications infrastructure, specifically. It uses the experience and expectations of the telecommunications system of the US as an example of the global challenges. The paper examines the principal factors underlying the change to more distributed systems in this sector, assesses surety issues associated with these changes, and suggests several possible strategies for mitigation. It also studies the ramifications of what could happen if this sector became a target for those seeking to compromise a nation`s security and economic well being. Experts in this area generally agree that the U. S. telecommunications sector will eventually respond in a way that meets market demands for surety. Questions remain open, however, about confidence in the telecommunications sector and the nation`s infrastructure during unintended circumstances--such as those posed by information warfare or by cascading software failures. Resolution of these questions is complicated by the lack of clear accountability of the private and the public sectors for the surety of telecommunications.

The ASCI Network for SC '98: Dense Wave Division Multiplexing for Distributed and Distance Computing

Description: This document highlights the DISCOM's Distance computing and communication team activities at the 1998 Supercomputing conference in Orlando, Florida. This conference is sponsored by the IEEE and ACM. Sandia National Laboratories, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Los Alamos National Laboratory have participated in this conference for ten years. For the last three years, the three laboratories have a joint booth at the conference under the DOE's ASCI, Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiatives. The DISCOM communication team uses the forum to demonstrate and focus communications and networking developments. At SC '98, DISCOM demonstrated the capabilities of Dense Wave Division Multiplexing. We exhibited an OC48 ATM encryptor. We also coordinated the other networking activities within the booth. This paper documents those accomplishments, discusses the details of their implementation, and describes how these demonstrations support overall strategies in ATM networking.

QUARTERLY TECHNICAL REPORT FOR IN-MINE (IM) SYSTEM

Description: A circuit that had been earlier lab-tested to eliminate multi-antenna interference in the In-mine (IM) system was fabricated, implemented and tested successfully in a system setting. An adaptive, tracking comb-filter for the through-the-earth (TTE) communications system was designed and implemented. This resulted in noticeable noise reduction. Studies for multi-channel transmission have begun.

Final report for the virtual channel encryptor laboratory directed research and development project

Description: A workstation with a single physical connection to a data communications network may have a requirement for simultaneous `virtual` communication channels to more than one destination. This report describes the development of techniques based on the Data Encryption Standard (DES) which encrypt these virtual channels to secure the data being transmitted against unauthorized access. A software module has been developed for the UNIX operating system using these techniques for encryption, and some development has also been done on a hardware device to be included between the workstation and network which can also provide these functions. The material presented in this report will be useful to those with a need to protect information in data communications systems from unauthorized access.
