Biotelemetry study of spring and summer habitat selection by striped bass in Cherokee Reservoir, Tennessee, 1978. [Morone saxatilis]

Description: Habitat selection of 31 adult striped bass was monitored by temperature sensing ultrasonic and radio transmitters in Cherokee Reservoir, Tennessee, from March through October 1978. This study sought to corroborate summer data obtained by Waddle (1979) in 1977 and to examine mechanisms of habitat selection by observing establishment of the summer distribution. During the spring and early summer months the striped bass ranged throughout the study area in the downstream half of the reservoir. Fish… more

An overview of acoustic telemetry

Description: Acoustic telemetry has been a dream of the drilling industry for the past 50 years. It offers the promise of data rates which are one-hundred times greater than existing technology. Such a system would open the door to true logging-while-drilling technology and bring enormous profits to its developers. The basic idea is to produce an encoded sound wave at the bottom of the well, let it propagate up the steel drillpipe, and extract the data from the signal at the surface. Unfortunately, substant… more

Data telecommunications at the CSCF

Description: At Brookhaven National Laboratory data telecommunication for remote job entry, interactive time sharing, networking, graphics, and special purpose links became increasingly important--they now rival the more traditional over-the-counter traffic. The BNL Central Scientific Computing Facility (CSCF) responded to this need with a number of developments. The latest and most comprehensive of these is a ''front-end'' communications system built around MODCOMP II computers. To put this project into it… more

Pulse code modulation data compression for automated test equipment

Description: Development of automated test equipment for an advanced telemetry system requires continuous monitoring of PCM data while exercising telemetry inputs. This requirements leads to a large amount of data that needs to be stored and later analyzed. For example, a data stream of 4 Mbits/s and a test time of thirty minutes would yield 900 Mbytes of raw data. With this raw data, information needs to be stored to correlate the raw data to the test stimulus. This leads to a total of 1.8 Gb of data to be… more

Geothermal down-well instrumentation. Final report

Description: Work to develop a telemetry link between a Sperry downwell geothermal turbo-pump and the well-head, without the requirement for cables within the pipe-string, is described. Two methods were studied, built, and tested in a well at Heber, California, during the first field tests on the pump. These were: (a) an acoustic scheme which transmitted a modulated 4 kHz acoustic carrier on the pipe-string and (b) an electromagnetic scheme which used the exhaust steam pipe annulus as a coaxial transmission… more

Database transfers between several systems. [FRAMIS and DATATRIEVE]

Description: The ability to transfer databases between systems allows the user to exploit the best features of either system. This paper addresses beginning Datatrieve users and deals with the issues involved in a transfer of a database from a central computing area to a PDP-11 at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. FRAMIS was used to clean the original database; DATATRIEVE was used to establish the new database. The new database residing on the PDP-11 was subject to structural change at any time.

Experiences with distributing graphic software between processors

Description: Software to aid the distribution and coordination of tasks between different processors was developed to distribute applications written in Fortran. This development led to the discovery of problems unique to Fortran and to interesting practical solutions. Two graphical applications were distributed to a variety of machines and machine pairs: CDC 7600-LSI/11, Cray-LSI/11, VAX 11/780, and Apollo. These distributions pointed out several parameters such as the use of Fortran Common, communication … more

Buried telemetry system for in-situ energy extraction

Description: During an in-situ energy extraction process, a continuous knowledge of the temperature profile through the combustion area is desirable for analysis and control. To provide this data, a telemetry system has been developed that will monitor the thermocouples from beneath the process bed, digitize the data into 12 bit words and store them into memory. Every six hours, the stored data is transmitted laterally through the earth to a receiver outside of the high temperature zone and then sent to the… more

Reviews of computing technology: Fiber distributed data interface

Description: Fiber Distributed Data Interface, more commonly known as FDDI, is the name of the standard that describes a new local area network (LAN) technology for the 90's. This technology is based on fiber optics communications and, at a data transmission rate of 100 million bits per second (mbps), provides a full order of magnitude improvement over previous LAN standards such as Ethernet and Token Ring. FDDI as a standard has been accepted by all major computer manufacturers and is a national standard a… more

An MS-DOS-based program for analyzing plutonium gamma-ray spectra

Description: A plutonium gamma-ray analysis system that operates on MS-DOS-based computers has been developed for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to perform in-field analysis of plutonium gamma-ray spectra for plutonium isotopics. The program titled IAEAPU consists of three separate applications: a data-transfer application for transferring spectral data from a CICERO multichannel analyzer to a binary data file, a data-analysis application to analyze plutonium gamma-ray spectra, for plutonium … more
