Midwest Floods of 2008: Potential Impact on Agriculture

An Investigation of Fretting Corrosion Under Several Conditions of Oxidation

Description: Note presenting a study to gain information as to the fundamental mechanism of fretting corrosion. The specific questions to be answered were whether chemical action played an important role in fretting of metal surfaces and whether any such action would improve the corrosion resistance of the metal investigated. The results indicated that the chemical action is of primary importance in fretting-corrosion effects and oxide formation does not give any protection to the metals but rather increases the rate of wear.

A Fundamental Investigation of Fretting Corrosion

Cumulative Fatigue Damage of Axially Loaded Alclad 75S-T6 and Alclad 24S-T3 Aluminum-Alloy Sheet

Description: Note presenting the results of cumulative-fatigue-damage tests made on 607 specimens machined from alclad 75S-T6 aluminum-alloy sheet 0.064 inch thick and 198 specimens of alclad 24S-T3 and alclad 75S-T6 aluminum-alloy sheet 0.032 inch thick. The cumulative-damage ratio was calculated as the sum of the ratios of the numbers of cycles applied at the different stress levels to the number of cycles at the same stress level that would cause failure.

Method for Determining the Need to Rework or Replace Compressor Rotor Blades Damaged by Foreign Objects

Description: Note presenting a method for deciding whether jet-engine compressor blades that have been nicked in service are safe from fatigue failure with continued engine operation. The method involves determining the vibratory stress distribution of the blades with damage inflicted in the laboratory. The method is judged to be a realistic criterion on inspecting damaged blades.

Cognitive and Perceptual-Motor Indicators of Lateralized vs. Diffuse Brain Damage in Adults.

Description: Among the goals of the neuropsychological assessment are to detect the presence of brain damage, localize which areas of the brain may be dysfunctional and describe subsequent functional impairments. The sensitivity of neuropsychological instruments in carrying out these functions is a question of some debate. The purpose of this study is to determine the utility of lateralizing indicators from the WAIS-III, McCarron Assessment of Neuromuscular Development (MAND) and Haptic Visual Discrimination Test (HVDT), from the McCarron-Dial System Neuropsychological Assessment Battery (MDS), in ascertaining the presence or absence of brain damage as well as location of lesion. The classification accuracies of using performance level indicators from these tests and lateralizing indicators, alone and together, were compared.

Development of practical damage-mapping and inspection systems

Description: We have developed and are continuing to refine semi-automated technology for the detection and inspection of surface and bulk defects and damage in large laser optics Different manifestations of the DAMOCLES system (Damage and Artifact Mapping Of Coherent-Laser-Exposed Substrates) provide an effective and economical means of being able to detect, map and characterize surface and bulk defects which may become precursors of massive damage in optics when subjected to high-fluence laser irradiation Subsequent morphology and evolution of damage due to laser irradiation can be tracked efficiently The strength of the Damocles system is that it allows for immediate visual observation of defects in an entire optic, which can range up to l-meter dimensions, while also being able to provide digital map and magnified images of the defects with resolutions better than 5 ┬Ám.

Detection and Location of Damage on Pipelines

Description: The INEEL has developed and successfully tested a real-time pipeline damage detection and location system. This system uses porous metal resistive traces applied to the pipe to detect and locate damage. The porous metal resistive traces are sprayed along the length of a pipeline. The unique nature and arrangement of the traces allows locating the damage in real time along miles of pipe. This system allows pipeline operators to detect damage when and where it is occurring, and the decision to shut down a transmission pipeline can be made with actual real-time data, instead of conservative estimates from visual inspection above the area.

Visual examinations of K west fuel elements

Description: Over 250 fuel assemblies stored in sealed canisters in the K West Basin were extracted and visually examined for damage. Substantial damage was expected based on high cesium levels previously measured in water samples taken from these canisters. About 11% of the inner elements and 45% of the outer elements were found to be failed in these examinations. Canisters that had cesium levels of I curie or more generally had multiple instances of major fuel damage.

Application of Damage Detection Techniques Using Wind Turbine Modal Data

Description: As any structure ages, its structural characteristics will also change. The goal of this work was to determine if modal response data fkom a wind turbine could be used in the detection of damage. The input stimuli to the wind turbine were from traditional modal hammer input and natural wind excitation. The structural response data was acquired using accelerometers mounted on the rotor of a parked and undamaged horizontal-axis wind turbine. The bolts at the root of one of the three blades were then loosened to simulate a damaged blade. The structural response data of the rotor was again recorded. The undamaged and damage-simulated datasets were compared using existing darnage detection algorithms. Also, a novel algorithm for combining the results of different damage detection algorithms was utilized in the assessment of the data. This paper summarizes the code development and discusses some preliminary damage detection results.

Visual examinations of K east fuel elements

Description: Selected fuel elements stored in both ``good fuel`` and ``bad fuel`` canisters in K East Basin were extracted and visually examined full length for damage. Lower end damage in the ``bad fuel`` canisters was found to be more severe than expected based on top end appearances. Lower end damage for the ``good fuel`` canisters, however, was less than expected based on top end observations. Since about half of the fuel in K East Basin is contained in ``good fuel`` canisters based on top end assessments, the fraction of fuel projected to be intact with respect to IPS processing considerations remains at 50% based on these examination results.

Micromechanics of spall and damage in tantalum

Description: The authors conducted a series of plate impact experiments using an 80-mm launcher to study dynamic void initiation, linkup, and spall in tantalum. The tests ranged in peak shock pressures so that the effect of peak pressure on the transition from void initiation, incipient spall, and full spall could be studied. Wave profiles were measured using a velocity interferometry system (VISAR), and targets were recovered using {open_quotes}soft{close_quotes} recovery techniques. The authors utilized scanning electron microscopy, metallographic cross-sections, and plateau etching techniques to obtain quantitative information concerning damage evolution in tantalum under spall conditions. The data (wave profiles and micrographs) are analyzed in terms of a new theory and model of dynamic damage cluster growth.
