Observation of Mesons Produced by the 184-inch Cyclotron

Description: The following report presents the study of meson tracks produced by a cyclotron of 184-inches, and prompting the question of whether the light mesons all come from decays of heavy mesons, or whether they are produced in a primary process at the target.

Cyclotron Component Design Technical Reports

Description: From introduction: The study of cyclotron-magnet design presented here is directed toward attaining a large ratio of energy in the ion beam with respect to cost. Alternatively, the goal may be regarded as a smaller, more convenient apparatus. These two objectives are not completely incompatible; a design that is more economical than the usual is also smaller. The best design of a cyclotron can be obtained only by considering the problem as a whole. The conditions necessary to maintain an ion beam, the conditions required for the operation of the oscillator, and a host of other problems influence the design of the magnet. It is assumed in this paper that the "other problems" can be satisfactorily solved, if the gap has a suitable geometry and the field a suitable space dependence.

A Proposal for the Mc2 Isochronous Cyclotron: A General Purpose High-Intensity 810-MeV Proton Accelerator

Description: Abstract: "The Oak Ridge National Laboratory proposes to build an isochronous eight-sector proton cyclotron to provide an extracted beam in excess of 100 A at 810 MeV. The primary proton beam and the secondary meson and neutron beams will be used to investigate nuclear structure, and the interactions between elementary particles. Biomedical and Space-oriented research programs are also planned. Shielded research areas and an extensive beam transport and analysis system are provided. Theoretical and experimental studies have shown that the Mc2 Cyclotron is a practical concept; high extraction efficiencies can be obtained, and the residual radiation problems are manageable. The project would require less than seven years to complete, and would cost about $43,000,000."

Development of Auxiliary Cyclotron Equipment for Using Tritium as Bombarding Particles in a Cyclotron

Description: "A circulating system for radioactive tritium was constructed, assembled, and tested. The results showed that the pumping speed of the system was too low for use. Therefore, bombardments in the cyclotron with tritium particles would not be made during the course of this project" (p. 1).

Description: The uses of radioactive isotopes in medical research can be conveniently divided into three principal categories; namely, the applications as tracers for the study of metabolic phenomena, as diagnostic aids in clinical medicine, and finally their role in therapy. Frequently radioisotopes available from the chain-reacting pile do not have a sufficient degree of specific activity for satisfactory use. A number of radioisotopes which can be produced with high specific activity in the pile possess half-lives too short to be of any practical value. Then, there are a few cases in which the desired radioisotope may be made in the pile with high specific activity, but concomitantly there is formed another radioisotope of the same element whose half-life is of such duration as to render its use hazardous in man. Finally, there are several elements of biological and medical interest whose radioactive isotopes can be produced only by the cyclotron.

Neutron Beams from Deuteron Breakup at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Description: Accelerator-based neutron sources offer many advantages, in particular tunability of the neutron beam in energy and width to match the needs of the application. Using a recently constructed neutron beam line at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at LBNL, tunable high-intensity sources of quasi-monoenergetic and broad spectrum neutrons from deuteron breakup are under development for a variety of applications.

Description: The electrostatically deflected beam of the 184-inch cyclotron has been used with the stacked foil and absorber technique to determine the excitation functions for the following reactions: Th{sup 232}(p,6n)Pa{sup 227}, Th{sup 232}(p,3n)Pa{sup 230}, Th{sup 232}(d,7n)Pa{sup 227}, Th{sup 232}({alpha},p8n)Pa{sup 227}, Th{sup 232}({alpha},p5n)Pa{sup 230}, and U{sup 238}(p,{alpha}8n)Pa{sup 227}. The data are presented graphically and discussed individually for each of the reactions. Some rough excitation function data have also been determined for the reactions Th{sup 232}(d,4n)Pa{sup 230}, U{sup 238}(p,{alpha}5n)Pa{sup 230}, Th{sup 232}({alpha},7n)U{sup 229}, and Th{sup 232}({alpha},6n)U{sup 230}. The results are discussed in terms of compound nucleus formation, transparency effects, and other factors in order to arrive at a qualitative picture for the mechanism of high energy nuclear reactions with heavy nuclei.

Description: Formulas are derived for the equilibrium orbit, isochronous condition, vertical and horizontal betatron frequencies, and for the effects of the 3/3 radial resonance in a three-fold geometry. The magnetic field is represented by a Fourier series in azimuth with amplitudes expanded in a Taylor series about the reference radius. The form is such that the various parameters may be deduced from an arbitrary set of field measurements in the median plane and the results obtained by direct substitution in algebraic formulas.

Accelerator break-out group summary

Description: Interesting developments in accelerators have shown that they can be used as {open_quote}factory{close_quote}-type systems with the choice of technology dependent on the specific requirements of the application. The status and future possibilities for cyclotrons and linear accelerators are compared briefly, based on discussions at a break-out session on accelerators. Only high power systems with beam powers in excess of a MW average power were considered.

Energetic Ion Loss Diagnostic for the Wendelstein 7-AS Stellarator

Description: A diagnostic to measure the loss of energetic ions from the Wendelstein 7-AS (W7-AS) stellarator has been built. It is capable of measuring losses of both neutral beam ions and energetic ions arising from ion cyclotron resonant heating. The probe can measure losses of both clockwise and counterclockwise-going energetic ions simultaneously, and accepts a wide range of pitch angles in both directions. Initial measurements by the diagnostic are reported.
