The Mass-8 Experiment -- Measuring the [Beta]-[Alpha] Angular Correlations

Description: The objective of the Mass-8 experiment is to perform a precision test of the conservation of the vector current hypothesis and a search for second class currents. The authors present preliminary data on the correlation coefficients of the {beta}-{alpha} angular correlations of the {beta}-delayed {alpha}-decays of {sup 8}Li and {sup 8}B.

Reaction $nu$d $Yields$ $mu$$sup -$pp/sub s/

Description: After making the usual model assumptions, the shape of the dsigma/dQ$sup 2$ distribution and the energy dependence and magnitude of the cross section were fit in order to determine the shape of the form factors for the reaction $nu$d $Yields$ $mu$$sup -$pp. It is noted that one can also test the CVC hypothesis. The cross section is shown as a function of neutrino energy for the $nu$n $Yields$ $mu$$sup -$p reaction. Also shown is the Q$sup 2$ dependence of the $nu$n $Yields$ $mu$$sup -$p events.… more

Weak interaction: past answers, present questions

Description: A historical sketch of the weak interaction is presented. From beta ray to pion decay, the V-A theory of Marshak and Sudarshan, CVC principle of equivalence, universality as an algebraic condition, PCAC, renormalized weak Hamiltonian in the rehabilitation of field theory, and some current issues are considered in this review. 47 references. Theoretical implications on ISABELLE physics

Description: A brief historical review of the development of understanding of the weak interaction and its final unification with electromagnetic theory is given first. Then the production cross sections of W/sup + -/ and Z/sup 0/ in hadronic scatterings are estimated; CVC, scaling, Drell-Yan model, structure functions and perturbative QCD, sigma/sub w/, sigma/sub z/, and production rate are aspects considered. Next, the detection of the Z/sup 0/ and W/sup + -/ in leptonic decay and hadronic decay is discus… more

The beta decay asymmetry parameter of /sup 35/Ar

Description: The beta decay asymmetry parameter for /sup 35/Ar = /sup 35/Cl + e/sup +/ + nu/sub e/ has been remeasured in order to resolve a long standing puzzle. Previous asymmetry measurements, when combined with the comparative half-life, yield a value for the vector coupling constant, G/sub v/, that is in serious disagreement with the accepted value. We produced polarized /sup 35/Ar by a (p,n) reaction on /sup 35/Cl using the polarized proton beam provided by Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's 88-Inch Cyclo… more

Neutrino--deuterium reactions in the 7-foot bubble chamber. [Strangeness, CVC theory, V-A theory]

Description: Recent results are reported from the analysis of 569,000 ..nu.. pictures taken in the BNL 7-ft bubble chamber filled with D/sub 2/ (and an additional 204,000 pictures in H/sub 2/). The statistics of current analysis include 648 quasielastic ..nu../sub ..mu../ d ..-->.. ..mu../sup -/pp/sub s/ events and 25 events with visible strangeness present. Using the quasielastic events in the framework of the conventional V-A theory, the values M/sub V/ = 0.87 +- 0.09 GeV and M/sub A/ = 1.03 +- 0.19 Ge… more
