Antiproton Interaction Cross Sections

Description: Using the 1.19-Bev/c antiproton beam recently discovered at the Berkeley Bevatron of the University of California, we have measured the attenuation cross section in beryllium and copper. These cross sections are compared to attenuation measurements made with the same geometry using positive protons of the same incident energy (497 MeV).

Sodium Graphite Reactor Quarterly Progress Report for October-December 1955. Section A. Section B

Description: An analysis was made of the nuclear parameters for sodium graphite reactor lattices. These parameters include thermal utilization, macroscopic cross sections, thermal diffusion length, and neutron absorption. Results of all calculations are given in graphical form. Test fuel slugs for the SRE were cycled up to 500 times between 100 and 500 deg C at the rate of 2 cycles/hr. Results are tabulated. The centrifugal casting of U alloy fuel slugs is briefly evaluated. Results of the microscopic exami… more

COMPARISON OF BORON AND HAFNIUM IN APPR CONTROL RODS

Description: A comparison of B and Hf for use in APPR control rods shows that it is possible to substitute Hf plate. Increased wall thickness of Hf will result in a smaller water volume, but reduction of the moderating center will not decrease the effectiveness of Hf rods. Burnup of Hf results in only small change of the initial blackness. Since neutron absorption in most of the Hf isotopes are (n, gamma ) reactions there is no heat generation in Hf rod. (W.L.H.)

AN ORACLE CODE FOR CALCULATION OF FERMI AGES BY NUMERICAL INTEGRATION

Description: An oracle code was prepared for the calculation of Fermi ages by numerical integration. The code is designed to compute values of The effects of and fast and slow diffusion constants for two-group calculations from cross section data. The values of The effects of and the diffusion constants may be obtained for mixtures of any or all of sixteen elements. While the present tapes do not contain cross sections for sixteen different elements, cross sections may be changed in a simple and rapid manne… more

The Catalysis of Nuclear Reactions by mu Mesons

Description: In the course of a recent experiment involving the stopping of negative K mesons in a 10-inch liquid hydrogen bubble chamber, an interesting new reaction was observed to take place. The chamber is traversed by many more negative {mu} mesons than K mesons, so that in the last 75,000 photographs, approximately 2500 {mu}{sup -} decays at rest have been observed. In the same pictures, several hundred {pi}{sup -} mesons have been observed to disappear at rest, presumably by one of the ''Panofsky rea… more

Spallation-Fission Competition in Heaviest Elements; Helium IonInduced Reactions in Plutonium Isotopes

Description: Excitation functions have been determined for the spallation and fission reactions induced in plutonium isotopes by 20 to 50 Mev helium ions. The method employed consisted of cyclotron bombardments of plutonium oxide followed by the chemical isolation and alpha or beta counting of radioactive reaction products. Formation cross sections are given where possible for the curium and americium spallation products corresponding to ({alpha},n), ({alpha},2n), ({alpha},3n), ({alpha},4n), ({alpha}5n), ({… more

Experimental Determination of the Scattering Cross-section of Ogives and Prolate Spheroids at Microwave Frequencies

Description: Because of the great difficulty of obtaining exact numerical values of cross-section, and because of the inherent uncertainties in interpreting and evaluating the approximate methods, accurate experimental cross-section data would be extremely useful to the radar engineer. It was with this purpose in mind that the present long-range research program in microwave scattering was undertaken. Of immediate interest were the scattering properties of the prolate spheroid, the ogive (formed by rotating… more
