MEETING XVII -- BEVATRON RESEARCH CONFERENCE -- BEVATRON OPERATION

Description: Bevatron operation has been stopped temporarily due to a generator fault. While repairs are being instituted the tank will be down to air for repairs and target installation. Operation on one generator is scheduled for May 3. It has been previously proposed that one could investigate the {pi}{sub 0} lifetime by measuring the converted electron yield from {pi}{sub 0} decay photons as a function of the thickness of a thin target in which both the {pi}{sub 0} production and photon conversion occur… more

On the Reaction p + d [right arrow] [mu]⁺ + t

Description: Abstract: "The cross section for this reaction is calculated for three Hulthen deuteron wave functions. A hard core in the deuteron at one-half meson Compton wavelength reduces the total cross section and flattens the angular distribution in the backwards direction in agreement with experiment."

STUDIES IN THE NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY OF PLUTONIUM, AMERICIUM, AND CURIUM AND MASSES OF THE HEAVIEST ELEMENTS

Description: Ion exchange column elution methods for the separation of americium and curium using tartrate and lactate solutions have been developed which are superior to citrate elutions. Tartrate elutions are suitable for slow separations and lactate elutions are satisfactory for general use where rapid separations are required. Fission and spallation products were isolated from Pu{sup 239} targets which had been bombarded with alpha particles of 21 to 37 Mev energy. Fission yield curves as well as fissio… more

On the Application of Multigroup Diffusion Theory to Fast Critical Assemblies

Description: Multigroup diffusion theory predicts too high a critical mass for small, highly enriched, critical assemblies. An attempt to improve the accuracy of diffusion theory predictions for fast reactors is described. Transport cross sections were adjusted on the basis of multigroup comparison of the Lady Godiva Reactor by diffusion theory and by the asymptotic solution to the Boltzmann equation. In general, the predictions made by the adjusted cross sections were in very good agreement with experiment… more

The Fission Cross Section f Factor of Pu²³⁹

Description: A presentation of the values for the Pu²³⁹ fission cross section f factor extended into a higher energy range than previously reported in BNL-250. The values were obtained by integrating the standard expression defining the f factor on the Hanford IBM-CPC equipment. The un-fit experimental data of Leonard, as corrected for resolution and doppler effect, was used above 0.03 ev being attached to an analytic fit applicable below this point. Results are shown on the accompanying graph.
