ETRANS: an energy transport system optimization code for distributed networks of solar collectors

Description: The optimization code ETRANS was developed at the Pacific Northwest Laboratory to design and estimate the costs associated with energy transport systems for distributed fields of solar collectors. The code uses frequently cited layouts for dish and trough collectors and optimizes them on a section-by-section basis. Decommissioning of commercial shallow-land burial sites

Description: Estimated costs and safety considerations for decommissioning LLW burial grounds have been evaluated. Calculations are based on a generic burial ground assumed to be located at a western and an eastern site. Decommissioning modes include: (1) site stabilization followed by long-term care of the site; and (2) waste relocation. Site stabilization is estimated to cost from $0.4 million to $7.5 million, depending on the site and the stabilization option chosen. Long-term care is estimated to cost a… more

Impact of common problems in geothermal drilling and completion

Description: Problems that arise in geothermal drilling and completion account for a significant portion of geothermal well costs. In order to evaluate new technologies for combatting these problems, the relative frequencies and severities of different problems have been estimated. The estimates were based on both subjective judgements and analysis of available drilling records. The most common problems include lost circulation, stuck pipe and cementing, and their impact is to increase well cost by an avera… more

Description: Cost and production data from five commercial-scale geothermal direct-heat application projects are reviewed. Unit costs of geothermal energy under a variety of assumptions about production levels, costs, tax treatment, financial structure, and cost of capital are calculated and compared to prices of conventional fuels which would be displaced over the life of a geothermal project. Geothermal energy is found to be less costly than distillate fuel oil for all cases examined and cheaper than natu… more

Description: Historical data are presented that demonstrate the significance of unexpected problems. In extreme cases, trouble costs are the largest component of well costs or severe troubles can lead to abandonment of a hole. Drilling experiences from US geothermal areas are used to analyze the frequency and severity of various problems. In addition, average trouble costs are estimated based on this analysis and the relationship between trouble and depth is discussed. The most frequent drilling and complet… more
