Pacific Northwest Laboratory Report on Fusion Energy Research, April 1977 - June 1977

Description: The development of economic data for fusion power plants continued in a study estimating the potential impact of a shortage of materials important in fusion plant construction. In studies developing heat transfer and fluid flow design tools for fusion reactor blankets, preconceptual design studies were initiated to identify the potential design limits of water cooling in the first wall of Tokamak Next Step (TNS) concepts. In surface effects research clean gold samples were irradiated in the Uni… more

TFTR coil case design

Description: The TFTR (TOKAMAK Fusion Test Reactor) TF (Toroidal Field) coil cases are highly loaded structures designed within severe constraints. Foremost among these are basic machine geometry, material characteristics of both the case and the copper/epoxy matrix it supports, and overall cost. Scoping and parametric studies have been performed continuously since conceptual design. The progression of design decisions including coil shape, support locations and their stiffnesses, material selection, and el… more

The rate dependence of the saturation flow stress of Cu and 1100 Al

Description: The strain-rate dependence of the saturation flow stress of OFHC Cu and 1100 Al from 10{sup {minus}3}s{sup {minus}1} to nearly to 10{sup 12}s{sup {minus}1} is examined. The flow stress above 10{sup 9}s{sup {minus}1} is estimated using Wallace's theory of overdriven shocks in metals. A transition to the power-law behavior {Psi} {approximately} {tau}{sub s}{sup 5} occurs at a strain rate of order 10{sup 5}s{sup {minus}1}. 10 refs., 2 figs.

Solder fatigue reduction in point focus photovoltaic concentrator modules

Description: Solder fatigue tests have been conducted on point focus photovoltaic concentration cell assemblies to identify a baseline fatigue life and to quantify the fatigue life improvements that result using a copper-molybdenum-copper low-expansion insert between the solar cell and copper heat spreader. Solder microstructural changes and fatigue crack growth were identified using cross sections and ultrasonic scans of the fatigue solder joints. The Coffin-Manson and Total Strain fatigue models for low-c… more

Atomic structure of clusters through chemical reactions

Description: Techniques for the probing of isolated metal cluster structure through adsorbate binding patterns will be described. The saturation of clusters with reagents such as ammonia and nitrogen provides information on the number of preferred binding sites for these reagents. The dependence of this number on cluster size can suggest particular structural themes. The equilibrium reaction with water can be used to identify cluster sizes having especially enhanced binding for the water molecule. Again, th… more

Cadmium sulfide/copper ternary heterojunction cell research. Final report, January 8, 1979-June 7, 1980

Description: Dual source, Se and CuInSe/sub 2/, coevaporation and flash evaporation of stoichiometric CuInSe/sub 2/ powder were investigated to develop a process of fabricating large area CdS/CuInSe/sub 2/ heterojunction solar cells. CuInSe/sub 2/ was seen to decompose upon evaporation, producing layered films in the dual source system. Annealing of these films and alternative dual sources have been considered. Single phase p type films have been produced but no devices have been made from such films. Flash… more

Anomalous rf magnetoresistance in copper at 4/degree/K

Description: We have measured the effect of a magnetic field on the surface resistance of polycrystalline Cu at f = 1.2 GHz and at 4.4/degree/K; under these conditions the surface resistance is well into the anomalous skin effect regime but has not reached its limiting value. We find that the transverse and longitudinal magnetoresistance are an order of magnitude smaller than the DC magnetoresistance and depend quadratically on the field. At low fields we observe a decrease in surface resistance with increa… more

Effect of liquid waste discharges from steam generating facilities

Description: This report contains a summary of the effects of liquid waste discharges from steam electric generating facilities on the environment. Also included is a simplified model for use in approximately determining the effects of these discharges. Four basic fuels are used in steam electric power plants: three fossil fuels--coal, natural gas, and oil; and uranium--presently the basic fuel of nuclear power. Coal and uranium are expected to be the major fuels in future years. The following power plant e… more

Resonance ionization mass spectrometry at Los Alamos National Laboratory

Description: Two approaches to RIMS will be discussed here. The first is the use of continuous-wave (cw) dye lasers as the ionization source. Continuous excitation effectively matches the ionization to the evaporation of sample from a resistively heated filament, providing for efficient use of the sample. In addition, cw ionization permits pulse counting detection, necessary for the measurement of large isotope ratios on small samples. In the cases of lutetium and technetium discussed below, average ionizat… more

Waste acid detoxification and reclamation: Phase 1, Project planning and concept development

Description: The objectives of this project are to develop processes for reducing the volume, quantity, and toxicity of metal-bearing waste acids. The primary incentives for implemeting these types of waste minimization processes are regulatory and economic in that they meet requirements in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and reduce the cost for treatment, storage, and disposal. Two precipitation processes and a distillation process are being developed to minimize waste from fuel fabrication oper… more

Stability and compatibility studies with the inorganic explosive 2-(5-cyanotetrazolato)pentaamminecobalt(III) perchlorate (CP)

Description: 2-(5-Cyanotetrazolato)pentaamminecobalt(III) perchlorate (CP) is an inorganic secondary explosive that has been developed for applications involving deflagration-to-detonation transition. Previously the primary explosives lead azide and lead styphnate had been used. Stability and compatibility studies with CP have been conducted for periods up to three years. By using the rate of formation of cobalt(II) as the prime stability measurement for CP no reaction above baseline has been observed at te… more

Correlation of mechanical and metallurgical parameters with the acoustic emission during tensile deformation of several metals and alloys

Description: Acoustic emission was monitored during plastic deformation under dead-weight tensile loading of polycrystalline aluminum, brass, copper, and steel. The acoustic emission data, both threshold-type and frequency-analysis type, were correlated with yield strength, stored elastic energy, strain hardening parameters, loading histories, diffusion processes, slip band motion and mosaic cell size. Major results are presented under the headings discontinuous yielding (Portevin--Le Chatelier Effect), par… more

Development of low cost contacts to silicon solar cells. Final report, 15 October 1978-30 April 1980

Description: A summary of work done on the development of a copper based contact system for silicon solar cells is presented. The work has proceeded in three phases: (1) Development of a copper based contact system using plated Pd-Cr-Cu. Good cells were made but cells degraded under low temperature (300/sup 0/C) heat treatments. (2) The degradation in Phase I was identified as copper migration into the cells junction region. A paper study was conducted to find a proper barrier to the copper migration proble… more

Temperature dependence of the fraction of re-emitted positrons, the positron work function, and the positronium fraction for Cu(III)+S

Description: A beam of 1 keV positrons incident on a Cu(111)+S surface has been used to study the dependence on temperature of the positron work function (phi/sub +/), the yield of re-emitted positrons (Y) and of the positronium (Ps) fraction. A positive dependence of the slow-positron yield on temperature is found which is attributed in part to a reduction in the magnitude of phi/sub +/ (approx. 25%) at 50 K relative to its value at 300 K. A similar, though weaker, positive dependence on temperature was se… more

Probe molecule studies: Active species in alcohol synthesis

Description: The goal of this research is to develop a better understanding of the mechanisms of formation of alcohols and other oxygenates from syngas over supported catalysts. Probe molecules will be added in situ during the reaction to help delineate reaction pathways and identify reaction intermediate species. The key of our study is to investigate how the species generated by these probe molecules interact with surface species present during oxygenate formation.
