Thermal convection at low Rayleigh number from concentrated sources in porous media

Description: A simple mathematical theory is proposed for the analysis of natural convective motion, at low Rayleigh number, from a concentrated source of heat in a fluid-saturated porous medium. The theory consists of retaining only the leading terms of series expansions of the dependent variables in terms of the Rayleigh number, is thus linear, and is valid only in the limit of small Rayleigh number. Based on fundamental results for a variety of isolated sources, superposition is used to provide solutions… more

TPC magnet cryogenic system

Description: The Time Projection Chamber (TPC) magnet at LBL and its compensation solenoids are adiabatically stable superconducting solenoid magnets. The cryogenic system developed for the TPC magnet is discussed. This system uses forced two-phase tubular cooling with the two cryogens in the system. The liquid helium and liquid nitrogen are delivered through the cooled load by forced tubular flow. The only reservoirs of liquid cryogen exist in the control dewar (for liquid helium) and the conditioner dewar… more

Natural convection phenomena in a nuclear power plant during a postulated TMLB' accident

Description: After the TMI (Three Mile Island) accident, there has been significant interest in analyzing and understanding the phenomena that may occur in a PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor) accident which may lead to partial or total core meltdown and degradation. Natural convection is one of the important phenomena. In the present paper the results of two numerical simulations of (1) four-loop PWR and (2) three-loop PWR are presented. The simulations were performed with the COMMIX(2) computer code. Our ana… more

Convective heat transport in geothermal systems

Description: Most geothermal systems under exploitation for direct use or electrical power production are of the hydrothermal type, where heat is transferred essentially by convection in the reservoir, conduction being secondary. In geothermal systems, buoyancy effects are generally important, but often the fluid and heat flow patterns are largely controlled by geologic features (e.g., faults, fractures, continuity of layers) and location of recharge and discharge zones. During exploitation, these flow patt… more

Results of two-phase natural circulation in hot-leg U-bend simulation experiments

Description: In order to study the two-phase natural circulation and flow termination during a small break loss of coolant accident in LWR, simulation experiments have been performed using two different thermal-hydraulic loops. The main focus of the experiment was the two-phase flow behavior in the hot-leg U-bend typical of BandW LWR systems. The first group of experiments was carried out in the nitrogen gas-water adiabatic simulation loop and the second in the Freon 113 boiling and condensation loop. Both … more

Inherent design features of the GCFR

Description: This paper discusses several inherent design features of the GCFR that enhance its safety and presents analyses to demonstrate the degree of protection they provide. These features are a subset of a larger group of potential inherent features that form the third line of protection (LOP-3) for the GCFR. The function of LOP-3 is to demonstrate that the inherent response of the reactor system will limit core damage even if active cooling and shutdown systems in LOP-1 and LOP-2 fail. By providing t… more

Natural convection heat transfer analysis of ATR fuel elements

Description: Natural convection air cooling of the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) fuel assemblies is analyzed to determine the level of decay heat that can be removed without exceeding the melting temperature of the fuel. The study was conducted to assist in the level 2 PRA analysis of a hypothetical ATR water canal draining accident. The heat transfer process is characterized by a very low Rayleigh number (Ra {approx} 10{sup {minus}5}) and a high temperature ratio. Since neither data nor analytical models wer… more

Natural convective behavior of EBR-II following a loss of flow from decay heat levels

Description: Eight loss-of-flow transients were conducted at initial decay heat levels of 0.75 to 1.6% of the rated EBR-II power. The data indicate that the natural convective flow was adequate to remove the decay heat without overheating the reactor core. Good agreement with NATDEMO and HOTCHAN predictions was obtained. (DLC)

Computational and experimental methods for enclosed natural convection

Description: Two computational procedures and one optical experimental procedure for studying enclosed natural convection are described. The finite-difference and finite-element numerical methods are developed and several sample problems are solved. Results obtained from the two computational approaches are compared. A temperature-visualization scheme using laser holographic interferometry is described, and results from this experimental procedure are compared with results from both numerical methods.

Cosmions and stars

Description: Hypothetical particles such as the heavy neutrino, the photino, or the sneutrino/emdash/generically called cosmions/emdash/may solve the so called missing mass problem. If they exist, the cosmions may close the Universe. In addition to their gravitational effect on cosmological scales, the cosmions may also be captured by stars and concentrate in their cores. Since cosmions are able to transport heat outside stellar cores much more efficiently than photons, they may seriously affect the thermod… more

Self-potential modeling from primary flows

Description: A new method for the calculation of self potentials (SP) based on induced current sources is presented. The induced current sources are due to divergences of the convective current which is driven, in turn, by a primary flow, either heat or fluid. Numerical modeling utilizing this method has been implemented using a two-dimensional transmission surface algorithm. When the primary flow is driven by the gradient of a potential, joint modeling of the primary flow and the resultant SP is possible w… more

Multicomponent mass transport model: a model for simulating migration of radionuclides in ground water

Description: This report presents the results of the development of a one-dimensional radionuclide transport code, MMT2D (Multicomponent Mass Transport), for the AEGIS Program. Multicomponent Mass Transport is a numerical solution technique that uses the discrete-parcel-random-wald (DPRW) method to directly simulate the migration of radionuclides. MMT1D accounts for: convection;dispersion; sorption-desorption; first-order radioactive decay; and n-membered radioactive decay chains. Comparisons between MMT1D … more

Experimental study of the steady natural convection in a horizontal annulus with irregular boundaries

Description: The natural convective heat transfer across an annulus with irregular boundaries was studied using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The annulus was formed by an inner hexagonal cylinder and an outer concentric circular cylinder. This configuration models, in two dimensions, a liquid metal fast breeder reactor spent fuel subassembly inside a shipping container. During the test, the annulus was filled with a single gas, either neon, air, argon, krypton, or xenon, at a pressure of about 0.5 MPa. Fro… more

Heat transfer through coals and other naturally occurring carbonaceous rocks

Description: The understanding of heat transfer through solid fossil fuels is essential to the phenomenology of pyrolysis, gasification and combustion of these fuels. While coals have thermal conductivities of 0.1 to 0.5 W/mK at 300/sup 0/K, heat transfer measurements are complicated by the changes found in these fuels caused by the heating processes. Such complications are clearly shown when one looks at thermal conductivity differences between virgin and heat-treated materials. Coals, upon heating, underg… more

Self-potential effects due to hydrothermal convection-velocity crosscoupling

Description: The modeling of self-potential effects by the use of electric and convection currents is readily adaptable to the problem of crosscoupled flows due to hydrothermal convection. In this modeling of the electrokinetic effects, all that is required is a velocity model and models of the crosscoupling parameters and the electric conductivity. A simple model of a two-dimensional, divergence-free velocity field is used to represent the essential features of a hydrothermal convection system. With this v… more
