Control Chart Method Applied to Errors in Radioactive Counting

Description: Abstract: The Control Chart statistical methods, developed by Showhart for the control of quality of manufactured products, are applied to the control of Geiger-Miller counting instruments. Experiments are reported to show the use to the Control Chart method for detecting disturbances in instrumental behavior and for detecting radioactive effects so weak that they are near the limit of detection of the instruments. As a corollary, the control chart can be used to reduce to its practical limit t… more

Effects of Urbanization on Floods in the Dallas, Texas Metropolitan Area

Description: From abstract: The analyses indicate that in a fully-developed residential area, the flood peaks with be 1.2 to 1.4 times those from an undeveloped area; and the annual direct runoff will be about double that from an undeveloped area. Data were not sufficient to determine the increase in runoff from a highly industrialized area where the effective imperviousness approaches 100 percent.

Projected Effects of Proposed Chloride-Control Projects on Shallow Ground Water--Preliminary Results for the Wichita River Basin, Texas

Description: From purpose and scope: The purpose of this report is to present preliminary results of the study by the Geological Survey on the following: (1) The existing ground-water conditions in the shallow fresh-water system in the vicinity of the proposed Truscott Brine Lake (figure 1) and (2) the projection of the post-construction effects of the proposed Truscott Brine Lake on the fresh-water aquifer, especially in relation to changes in hydraulic head but also with respect to possible changes in the… more

Analog-Model Simulations for Secondary Canal Controls and Forward Pumping Water-Management Schemes in Southeast Florida

Description: From purpose and scope: The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate, through electrical analog model simulation, the effects of two specific water-management proposals in Dade County. Proposal one is the installation of a secondary control on Snake Creek Canal and proposal two is the forward pumping scheme.

A Stormwater Management Model for the West Branch Brandwyne Creek, Chester County, Pennsylvania

Description: From introduction: This report describes rainfall-runoff modeling for three subbasins of the West Branch Brandywine Creek basin. Effects of increased runoff from continued urbanization of the basin and of proposed flood-control structures for both the present and projected population are evaluated for the West Branch Brandwyne Creek at Coatesville and Modena and for Sucker Run at State Route 82.

The Effects of Highway Construction on Sediment Discharge into Blockhouse Creek and Steam Valley Run, Pennsylvania

Description: From abstract: This report presents data collected between October 1972 and September 1977 to find "the effects of highway construction in the thirty-eight square mile Blockhouse Creek basin" in Pennsylvania. It contains sketches, graphs, photographs, and tables.

Low-Flow Characteristics of Wisconsin Streams at Sewage-Treatment Plants

Description: Abstract: Low-flow characteristics of Wisconsin streams at 415 sewage-treatment plants are presented in this report. The low-flow characteristics presented are the annual minimum 7-day mean flow that occurs on the average of once in 2 years and the annual minimum 7-day mean flow that occurs on the average of once in 10 years. The low-flow characteristics at most sewage-treatment plants were determined by correlating baseflow measurements at the sewage-treatment plants to the concurrent daily me… more

Effects of the Urbanization on Floods in the Houston, Texas Metropolitan Area

Description: Abstract: Rainfall and runoff data from drainage basins in the Houston metropolitan area and a 60-year rainfall record for the National Weather Service station, Houston-City, were used to simulate 60 annual flood peaks at 26 sites. Selected frequency characteristics, based on these simulated annual peaks are related to drainage area and percentage of impervious area. These relations which may be used to estimate the flood characteristics at ungaged sites, indicate that in the Houston metropolit… more

Low-Flow Characteristics of Wisconsin Streams at Sewage-Treatment Plants and Industrial Plants

Description: From abstract: The purpose of this report is to present low-flow characteristics of Wisconsin streams at sewage-treatment and industrial plants. The low-flow characteristics are needed to implement water-quality standards for all surface waters of the State. Water-quality standards in Wisconsin are based on the annual minimum 7-day mean flow below which the flow will fall on the average of once in 10 years.
