Transfer measurement statistics derived from Purex Processing Measurements` Quality Control Program

Description: The Purex Processing Measurements Quality Control Program was designed to provide for orderly accumulation of measurements data suitable for statistical evaluation and to identify those elements of a measurement which, if improved, would result in significant reduction in overall measurement variation. This report gives an analysis of the audit data obtained at four transfer stations: L9 plutonium product loadout, K6 uranium product to storage, F15 salt waste to F16 and D5 dissolved feed to pro… more

Reactivity balance and associated reactor physics data, December 1964

Description: Data in this report are significant to Pile Physics calculations and are submitted by the Area Physicists at the respective reactors. Reactivity in non-uranium charges and in radial and spike enrichment is calculated either by one-group diffusion theory as described in HW-60439, or by the simpler flux-squared weighting method. The former method provides a more accurate evaluation for larger enrichment inventories; the latter method is sufficient for radial enrichment of less than about 0.25 per… more

Blisters in BDF-type control rods: Engineering final summary report

Description: The scope of this report defies a concise abstract. In lieu of an abstract, the following topical outline will both indicate the subjects covered and show how these subjects are organized. Part I, Engineering Aspects: Blister Formation, Temperature Effects, Cooling Effects, Drive Connections, Housing Effects, Housing Materials, Radiation Effects. Part II, The Behavior of Boron Carbide-Aluminum Poisons: Swelling, Swelling Rates, Restraint, Material Behavior.

Production Test PT-IP-810 installation of flat aluminum horizontal control rod, D Reactor

Description: The two small reactors (B and D) currently utilize a flat aluminum horizontal control rod consisting of three cooling tubes surrounded by boron carbide-aluminum neutron absorber rings and an outer casing of aluminum. Two adverse and complementary characteristics of these rods have served to limit the functional reliability of the rods under current and anticipated reactor operating conditions. The construction of the rod presents a relatively high resistance to transfer of heat from the sheath … more

PT IP-754 physics testing of H Reactor: Final report

Description: Significant changes in fuel design, operating levels, loading geometry, and moderator condition have taken place since the Hanford reactors started operation. Changes which affect nuclear safety parameters require continuing analysis of the possible effects on safety system strengths and maximum potential reactivities. For this reason the shutdown of a Hanford reactor offered an excellent opportunity to measure many of the above factors without a significant production loss. Therefore a test pr… more

Horizontal control rod renovation program all production reactors

Description: The purpose of this document is to outline the proposed implementation of engineering program results to remedy the major horizontal control rod (HCR) problems at Hanford production reactors. K and C Reactors currently use a water cooled, round, aluminum control rod packed with boron carbide powder, B and D Reactors use a water cooled, flat, aluminum rod made up of sintered boron carbide-aluminum rings strung on three cooling tubes, all of which is encased in an outer aluminum shell. The nature… more

Control Drum Bearing Vibration Test (EML-85)

Description: A series of vibration tests were run at reactor temperature conditions to determine whether the control drum bearings could withstand wthe critical axial vibrations that might occur during ground tests of the NRX-A reactors. Additional tests will be required to evaluate the bearings under space operating conditions.
