ANHARMONIC POTENTIAL CONSTANTS AND THEIR DEPENDENCE UPON BOND LENGTH

Description: Empirical study of cubic and quartic vibrational force constants for diatomic molecules shows them to be approximately exponential functions of internuclear distance. A family of curves is obtained, determined by the location of the bonded atoms in rows of the periodic table. Displacements between successive curves correspond closely to those in Badger's rule for quadratic force constants (for which the parameters are redetermined to accord with all data now available). Constants for excited el… more

Supporting Analysis for Thermal Suitability of Fuel Elements for SM-1A Core I Loading

Description: A recommended SM-1A Core I loading chart was derived from available, metallurgically acceptable elements at the SM-1A and SM-1 sites. The derivation was based on local thermal and hydraulic considerations of minimum elementto- element coolant channel clearances. These clearances were determined from field inspection measurements of outer fuel plate spacing, as modified by analytical calculations of plate ripple growth during exposure to reactor operating thermal stresses. Chemical Technology Division, Unit Operations Section Monthly Progress Report, June 1961

Description: An interfacial viseometer was built for use in an interfacial phenomena study. Installation of a 6-in.-ID foam separation column system was completed. The dispersiondrying-sintering characteristics of six low-nitrate batches of thoria sol material were studied. The average effective porosity of the CuO pellets used for reactor helium purification was determined to be 0.0545 for H/ sub 2/ transport and 0.0526 for CO transport. In continuous Zirflex dissolution studies, no H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ decomp… more

The Effects of Irradiation on Some Binary Alloys of Thorium-Plutonium and Zirconium-Plutonium

Description: A specimen of cast thorium-5 wt% plutonium and one of thorium-10 wt% plutonium were irradiated to total atom burnups of 1.9 and 2.6%, respectively, at maximum fuel temperatures of approximately 450 deg C. Both alloys displayed excellent dimensional stability with volume increases of 0.8 and 1.2% per atom per cent burnup, respectively. Three cold-rolled specimens of zirconium-5 wt% plutonium and one cold-rolled specimen of zirconium-7 wt% plutonium were also irradiated. The zirconium- plutonium … more

Configuration Management Program Plan

Description: Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC) has established a configuration management (CM) plan to execute the SRS CM Policy and the requirements of the DOE Order 4700.1. The Reactor Restart Division (RRD) has developed its CM Plan under the SRS CM Program and is implementing it via the RRD CM Program Plan and the Integrated Action Plan. The purpose of the RRD CM program is to improve those processes which are essential to the safe and efficient operation of SRS production reactors. This docume… more

Boundary element formulation for planar time-dependent inelastic deformation of plates with cutouts

Description: A boundary element formulation for planar, time-dependent, inelastic deformation problems for bodies with cutouts is presented in this paper. A stress function description for these nonlinear problems leads to a nonhomogeneous biharmonic equation for the stress function rate. An integral representation of the solution uses modified kernels which guarantee that the cutout boundary is traction free for all time. This incorporation of the effect of the cutout on the stress field into the kernels l… more

Cost Function Studies for Power Reactors

Description: A function to evaluate the cost of electricity produced by a nuclear power reactor was developed. The basic equation, revenue = capital charges + profit + operating expenses, was expanded in terms of various cost parameters to enable analysis of multiregion nuclear reactors with uranium and/or plutonium for fuel. A corresponding IBM 704 computer program, which will compute either the price of electricity or the value of plutonium, is presented in detail. (auth)

Computer program SCAP-BR for gamma-ray streaming through multi-legged ducts

Description: A computer program, SCAP-BR, has been developed at Burns and Roe for the gamma-ray streaming analysis through multi-legged ducts. SCAP-BR is a modified version of the single scattering code, SCAP, incorporating capabilities of handling multiple scattering and volumetric source geometries. It utilizes the point kernel integration method to calculate both the line-of-sight and scattered gamma dose rates by employing the ray tracing technique through complex shield geometries. The multiple scatter… more

New Solutions of the Boltzmann Equation for Monoenergetic Neutron Transport in Spherical Geometry

Description: Solutions of the Boltzmann equation for monoenergetic neutron transport in spherical geometry are derived which are respectively singular and regular at the center of the sphere. A few specific partial singular solutions are presented. The regular solutions in spherical geometry are constructed by superposition of solutions in plane geometry which belong to the same k. Finally, the solutions are compared with their representations by a series of spherical harmonics. (D. L.C.)

KINETIC EXPERIMENTS ON WATER BOILERS-"A" CORE REPORT-PART II. ANALYSIS OF RESULTS

Description: The status of the analytic portion of the KEWB program at the time of completion of the spherical core experiments is summarized. Three computer programs were developed for use in this analytic effort. The first reassembles and smooths three decades of reactor power data read separately from oscillogram records of reactor excursions. It then computes the logarithmic derivative of the power, energy release, fuel solution temperature, and temperature compensated reactivity. The second program uti… more

Transient Temperature Distributions in a Thermally Orthotropic Plate With Non-Uniform Surface Heating

Description: ent temperature variation in a thermally orthotropic plate which is subjected to an arbitrary heating rate distribution along one face with all other surfaces being insulated. Dimensionless temperature histories and distributions determined from this solution are presented for the special, but representative, case of a linearly varying heating rate distribution on plates with varying degrees of thermal orthotropy. These results establish quantitatively the value of a material with high planar a… more

Toroidal plasma equilibrium with gravity

Description: Toroidal magnetic field configuration in a gravitational field is calculated both from a simple force-balance and from the calculation using magnetic surfaces. The configuration is found which is positionally stable in a star. The vibrational frequency near the equilibrium point is proportional to the hydrostatic frequency of a star multiplied by the ratio (W/sub B//W/sub M/)/sup 1/2/ where W/sub B/ is the magnetic field energy density, and W/sub M/ is the material pressure at the equilibrium p… more
