Kinetic and Chemical Mechanism of Pyrophosphate-Dependent Phosphofructokinase

Description: Data obtained from isotope exchange at equilibrium, exchange of inorganic phosphate against forward reaction flux, and positional isotope exchange of 18O from the (βγ-bridge position of pyrophosphate to a (β-nonbridge position all indicate that the pyrophosphate-dependent phosphofructokinase from Propionibacterium freudenreichii has a rapid equilibrium random kinetic mechanism. All exchange reactions are strongly inhibited at high concentrations of the fructose 6-phosphate/Pi and MgPPi/Pi subst… more

Stability diagrams for fourfold coordination of polyvalent metal ions in molten mixtures of halide salts

Description: The stability of local fourfold coordination for divalent and trivalent metal ions in liquid mixtures of polyvalent metal halides and alkali halides is classified by means of structural coordinates obtained from properties of the elements. In parallel with earlier classifications of compound crystal structures and molecular shapes, the elemental properties are taken from first-principles calculations of valence electron orbitals in atoms, in the form of (i) the nodal radii of Andreoni, Balderes… more

Annihilation Momentum Density of Positrons Trapped at Vacancy-Type Defects in Metals and Alloys

Description: Positron annihilation, especially the angular correlation of annihilation radiation, is a powerful tool for investigating the electronic spectra of ordered as well as defected materials. The tendency of positrons to trap at vacancy-type defects should enable this technique to study the local environment of such defects. However, we need to develop a theoretical basis for calculating the two-photon annihilation momentum density rho/sub 2gamma/(p-vector). We have recently formulated and implement… more

The two band model for halogen-bridged transition metal linear chain complexes

Description: Halogen-bridged transition-metal complexes have been of interest to chemists for many decades as dyes and strongly dichroic materials. However they have only recently begun to receive detailed consideration in the physics community. Their potential important arises because of: the increasing appreciation of strong, competing electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in low-dimensional materials and the consequent need to expand many-body techniques. The MX materials offer a rapidly exp… more

Electrodeposition of aluminium, aluminium/magnesium alloys, and magnesium from organometallic electrolytes

Description: The electrodeposition of aluminum, magnesium, and the combination of these metals from nonaqueous media is discussed. Plating baths for depositing Al/Mg alloys or for plating essentially pure Mg were developed. These solutions contain alkali meal fluoride or quaternary ammonium halide/aluminium alkyl complexes and dialkyl magnesium dissolved in aromatic hydrocarbons. Alloy deposits over the whole composition range can be plated from these solutions by varying the relative quantities of the alum… more

Ab initio studies of transition-metal dihydrogen chemistry

Description: Examples of transition metal complexes containing dihydrogen ligands are investigated using ab initio electronic structure calculations employing effective core potentials. Calculated geometrical structures and relative energies of various forms of WL/sub 5/(H/sub 2/) complexes (L = CO, PR/sub 3/) are reported, and the influence of the ligand on the relative stabilities of the dihydrogen and dihydride forms is studied. The possible intramolecular mechanisms for H/D scrambling are investigated i… more

Direct Catalytic Conversion of Methane and Light Hydrocarbon Gases Quarterly Report: Number 6

Description: The goal of this research is to develop catalysts that directly convert methane and light hydrocarbons to intermediates that later can be converted to either liquid fuels or value-added chemicals, as economics dictate. During this reporting period, we synthesized several phthalocyanine catalysts supported on magnesia (MgO) in Task 3. In Task 4 we have tested these catalysts for oxidation of methane and did a number of blank experiments to determine the cause of the low methanol yield we have ob… more

Nuclear reorganization barriers to electron transfer

Description: The nuclear barrier to electron transfer arises from the need for reorganization of intramolecular and solvent internuclear distances prior to electron transfer. For reactions with relatively small driving force (''normal'' free-energy region) the nuclear factors and rates increase as intrinsic inner-shell and outer-shell barriers decrease; this is illustrated by data for transition metal complexes in their ground electronic states. By contrast, in the inverted free-energy region, rates and nuc… more

Hydrogen-related effects in crystalline semiconductors

Description: Recent experimental and theoretical information regarding the states of hydrogen in crystalline semiconductors is reviewed. The abundance of results illustrates that hydrogen does not preferentially occupy a few specific lattice sites but that it binds to native defects and impurities, forming a large variety of neutral and electrically active complexes. The study of hydrogen passivated shallow acceptors and donors and of partially passivated multivalent acceptors has yielded information on the… more
