A method to estimate the concentration of elements in smoke from burning vegetation growing in contaminated soil

Description: The Savannah River Site has areas where soil is contaminated with metals and/or radionuclides. Many of these areas are surrounded by native vegetation which is growing adjacent to the area and where the roots have penetrated into the contaminated soil of the area. In some cases vegetation has actually invaded the contaminated area. Even though the volume of contaminated vegetation is small, there are problems associated with its disposal. Vegetation decomposes quickly after burial and the volum… more

Design charts for spacing of vacuum line supports

Description: This paper presents design tables and graphs to aid engineers and designers in the selection of support spacing for vacuum beam lines and other vacuum pipes. This data applies to support spacing for thin wall pipes and tubes under an internal vacuum (or open to atmosphere) and subject to external atmospheric pressure. Data is generated from the equations for a simply supported thin walled pipe or tube of circular cross section. These tables and graphs indicate what the minimum spacing of suppor… more

Localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking of candidate materials for high-level radioactive waste disposal containers in the US: A literature review

Description: Container materials may undergo any of several modes of degradation in this environment, including: undesirable phase transformations due to lack of phase stability; atmospheric oxidation; general aqueous corrosion; pitting; crevice corrosion; intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC); and transgranular stress corrosion cracking (TGSCC). This paper is an analysis of data from the literature relevant to the pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of these alloys. Th… more

Chemical compatibility of tank wastes in tanks 241-C-106, 241-AY-101, and 241-AY-102. Revision 1

Description: This report documents the chemical compatibility of waste types within tanks 241-C-106, 241-AY-101, and 241-AY-102. This information was compiled to facilitate the transfer of tank 241-C-106 waste to tank 241-AY-102 utilizing supernatant from tank 241-AY-101 as the sluicing medium. This document justifies that no chemical compatibility safety issues currently understood, or theorized from thermodynamic modeling, will result from the intended sluice transfer operation.

The Savannah River Site`s Groundwater Monitoring Program: Third quarter 1992

Description: The Environmental Protection Department/Environmental Monitoring Section (EPD/EMS) administers the Savannah River Site`s (SRS) Groundwater Monitoring Program. During third quarter 1992, EPD/EMS conducted extensive sampling of monitoring wells. Table 1 lists those well series with constituents in the groundwater above Flag 2 during third quarter 1992, organized by location. Results from all laboratory analyses are used to generate this table. Specific conductance and pH data from the field also … more

Pile water modifications at DR and H Areas for increased production facilities

Description: A detailed study was undertaken to investigate the feasibility of modifying the front and rear face piping at DR and H Areas to permit increased production rates. This study is in conjunction with a larger investigation concerning methods of increasing plant production facilities. The results of the subject study indicate that approximately one year would be required for the design, procurement, and delivery of critical materials, and that the estimated construction shutdown time to complete ea… more

Compilation of data on 51 ruptured slugs

Description: The following tabulation includes information on all uranium slug failures which have occurred through September 26, 1951. The four suspect slugs which are listed were discharged from tubes which gave strong indication of containing ruptures. Although no obvious rupture could be found among the slugs from these tubes, the listed pieces exhibited defects which may be incipient ruptures.

Stress analysis of shielded receiver lifting frame for core sampler truck {number_sign}2

Description: This analysis evaluates the structural design adequacy of the shielded receiver lifting frame (SRLF) for the rotary mode core sampler truck number 2 (RMCST{number_sign}2). The analysis considers the loads expected during operation of the SRLF. Most of the existing welds were not in conformance with those specified on the drawings, H-2-91715 and -91716 (RHO 1988a and RHO 1988b). Stress analysts and engineers examined the configuration of the welds connecting the frame members of the SRLF and tho… more
