Measurements of the dependence of damage thresholds on laser wavelength, pulse duration and film thickness

Description: Results of three experiments will be described. We used 351-nm and 355-nm pulses with durations of 0.6, 1, 5 and 9 ns measure thresholds for a variety of anti-reflectance and high reflectance coatings. The functional form t/sup m/, with t the pulse duration, was used to scale fluence thresholds measured at 0.6 ns to those measured at 9.0 ns. Values of the coefficient m ranged from 0.10 to 0.51. The average value was 0.30. In the second experiment, we measured thresholds at 1064 nm, 527 nm and 3… more

Cadmium sulfide/copper sulfide heterojunction cell research. Final report, February 26, 1979-July 15, 1980

Description: Extensive modifications were made to the multi-source deposition apparatus. These include the installation of a larger vacuum chamber on the existing system. The new chamber provides improved inter-source shielding, an improved substrate mounting and heating system, and a vacuum interlock for introducing substrates. CdS resistivity control by both In doping and off-stoichiometric deposition has been investigated. Indium doping has been achieved both by diffusion from a pre-deposited In layer an… more

Energy Program annual report

Description: The national economy is particularly dependent on efficient electrical generation and transportation. Electrical demand continues to grow and will increasingly rely on coal and nuclear fuels. The nuclear power industry still has not found a solution to the problem of disposing of the waste produced by nuclear reactors. Although coal is in ample supply and the infrastructure is in place for its utilization, environmental problems and improved conversion processes remain technical challenges. In … more

Coal Technology Program. Progress report for November 1977

Description: A block of Pittsburgh seam bituminous coal and a block of Wyodak subbituminous coal were pyrolyzed under reducing gas in support of in situ gasification. Information from previously completed block pyrolysis of bituminous coal under an argon atmosphere show that differences in evolved gas result from differences in heating rates. Compared to block pyrolysis at 0.3 C/sup 0//min, block pyrolysis at 3 C/sup 0//min produces less gas but gas with a higher heating value, yielding a higher overall pyr… more

Protective coatings and sealants for solar applications

Description: An aging study has been completed which evaluated a number of polymeric materials for potential use as (1) protective coatings for back surfaces of mirrors and (2) solar heliostat edge seals. These investigations were conducted in an artificial weathering chamber that accelerated thermal cycling. The primary mirror failure mode was observed to be silver corrosion resulting from moisture exposure. To increase mirror longevity in current heliostat designs, intimate bonding at all the composite in… more

Development of passive electronic components for instrumentation of improved geothermal logging tools and components. Annual progress report

Description: Short term objectives for well-logging instrumentation are circuits which can operate at temperatures in the range 275/sup 0/C to 350/sup 0/C; the medium term goal is operation up to 500/sup 0/C, and the long term goal is to achieve operation at 1000/sup 0/C. It is apparent that useful electronic circuits will require the combination of both passive components and active devices. In order to meet the compatibility requirements, the basic technology which has been selected in this project is the… more

Ceramic technology for Advanced Heat Engines Project

Description: Significant accomplishments in fabricating ceramic components for advanced heat engine programs have provided evidence that the operation of ceramic parts in high-temperature engine environments is feasible. However, these programs have also demonstrated that additional research is needed in materials and processing development, design methodology, and database and life prediction before industry will have a sufficient technology base from which to produce reliable cost-effective ceramic engine… more

A design of experiment study of plasma sprayed alumina-titania coatings

Description: An experimental study of the plasma spraying of alumina-titania powder is presented in this paper. This powder system is being used to fabricate heater tubes that emulate nuclear fuel tubes for use in thermal-hydraulic testing. Coating experiments were conducted using a Taguchi fractional-factorial design parametric study. Operating parameters were varied around the typical spray parameters in a systematic design of experiments in order to display the range of plasma processing conditions and t… more

A replaceable reflective film for solar concentrators

Description: The 3M Company manufactures a silvered acrylic film called ECP-305 that is regarded as the preferred reflective film for use on stretched-membrane heliostats. However, ECP-305 will degrade in time, due to both corrosion of the silver layer and delamination at the film's silver-to-acrylic interface, and will eventually need to be replaced. 3M uses a very aggressive adhesive on this film, and once it is laminated, replacement is very difficult. The purpose of this investigation was the developmen… more

Array automated assembly: Phase 2. Quarterly report

Description: An analysis was made of cost trade-offs for shaping modified square wafers from cylindrical crystals. For reasonably expectable silicon and sheet costs, the optimum shape will be nearer a circle than a square. Tests were conducted of the effectiveness of texture etching for removal of surface damage on sawed wafers. Four glass systems have survived preliminary screening tests for use as edge masking dielectrics. These include beta-spodumen, MgO-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ borosilicate, baria and titania … more

Radiographic detection of 100 A thickness variations in 1-. mu. m-thick coatings applied to submillimeter-diameter laser fusion targets

Description: We have developed x-ray radiography to measure thickness variations of coatings on laser fusion targets. Our technique is based on measuring the variation in x-ray transmission through the targets. The simplest targets are hollow glass microshells or microballoons 100 to 500 ..mu..m in diameter, that have several layers of metals or plastics, 1 to 100 ..mu..m thick. Our goal is to examine these opaque coatings for thickness variations as small as 1% or 0.1%, depending on the type of defect. Usi… more

Study of particle rebound characteristics and material erosion at high temperature

Description: In this research an investigation was conducted to study the ash particle rebound characteristics and the associated erosion behavior of alloys and coatings which are widely used in gas and steam turbines. A three-component LDV system was used to measure the restitution parameters of 15 micron mean diameter coal ash particles impacting superalloys and coating at different angles. The presented results show the variation of the particle restitution ratios with the impingement angle for the coate… more

The electrical insulation of the DIII-D advanced divertor electrode

Description: The electrode for biasing experiments on the DIII-D tokamak was installed in the summer of 1990 and biasing experiments have shown positive results. For the electrode, electrical insulation had to provide voltage standoff in the DIII-D divertor environment of neutral pressures in the range of 10{sup {minus}8} to 5 {times} 10{sup {minus}2} torr, variable magnetic fields, and in the presence of ionizing radiation. The electrical insulation system was designed and tested in air and vacuum for volt… more

Poly(lactic acid) degradable plastics, coatings, and binders

Description: Biochemical processes to derive value from the management of high carbohydrate food wastes, such as potato starch, corn starch, and cheese whey permeate, have typically been limited to the production of either ethanol or methane. Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) believes that lactic acid presents an attractive option for an alternate fermentation end product, especially in light of lactic acids' being a viable candidate for conversion to environmentally safe poly(lactic acid) (PLA) degradable … more

Phase 2 of the array automated assembly task for the Low Cost Solar Array Project. Final report, October 1, 1978-October 30, 1979

Description: The process sequence for the fabrication of dendritic web silicon into solar panels has been modified to include aluminum back surface field formation. Sputtering is the preferred method for depositing the aluminum. Plasma etching has been shown to be a feasible technique for pre-diffusion cleaning of the web. This would replace wet chemical cleaning. Several contacting systems have been studied. The total plated Pd-Ni system (Motorola Process) is not compatible with our process sequence; howev… more
