Everyday Performances in U.S. Household Kitchens

Description: BMA Innovation Consulting is committed to serving consumers products that can play a more meaningful role in household cleaning. So far, their innovation department has used psychology-based principles and approaches that have helped them understand consumers’ preferences, attitudes and claimed needs in household cleaning. That said, little information has been collected on the active role that products play or could play as participants in the everyday dynamics of US consumers. An anthropologi… more

Analysis of Pulse-jet Cleaning of Dust Cake from Ceramic Filter Element

Description: In this study, behaviors of released dust and pressure inside and outside the filter element were observed very precisely. Based on the observation, a simple model correlating between momentum acting on released dust, pressure and, shear and tensile stresses has been proposed. Then its validity was discussed by comparing calculated and experimental results.

Design of a Monitoring System for a Plasma Cleaning Machine

Description: Plasma cleaning is the most effective dry process to remove surface contaminates from a SAW (Surface Acoustical Wave) device. Consistent gas pressures, flows, and good electrical connections between the chamber shelves are necessary for the process to function predictably. In addition, operation of the monitoring system must be transparent to the plasma cleaning unit. This thesis describes a simple solution to the complex problem of monitoring a plasma cleaning system. The monitoring system use… more

EUV mask surface cleaning effects on lithography process performance

Description: The reflective, multilayer based, mask architectures for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography are highly susceptible to surface oxidation and contamination. As a result, EUV masks are expected to undergo cleaning processes in order to maintain the lifetimes necessary for high volume manufacturing. For this study, the impact of repetitive cleaning of EUV masks on imaging performance was evaluated. Two, high quality industry standard, EUV masks are used for this study with one of the masks under… more

CAN SORBENT-BASED GAS PHASE AIR CLEANING FOR VOCS SUBSTITUTE FOR VENTILATION IN COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS?

Description: This paper reviews current knowledge about the suitability of sorbent-based air cleaning for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air in commercial buildings, as needed to enable reductions in ventilation rates and associated energy savings. The principles of sorbent air cleaning are introduced, criteria are suggested for sorbent systems that can counteract indoor VOC concentration increases from reduced ventilation, major findings from research on sorbent performance for this ap… more

The Transient Regeneration in the Patchy Cleaning of Rigid Gas Filters--Comparison of Modeling to Experiment

Description: The experimental investigations performed within the scope of the present contribution are carried out in a lab scale filter test rig, which is built according to German VDI guideline 3926. The filter coupon (15 cm diameter) under investigation is mounted parallel to the crude gas channel which enables cross flow filtration as experienced in filter housings. Besides the photometric concentration monitor and the control device, an optical measuring system is mounted on the filter test rig opposi… more

Novel Laser Ablation Technology for Surface Decontamination

Description: Laser ablation for surface cleaning has been pursued for the removal of paint on airplanes. It has also been pursued for the cleaning of semiconductor surfaces. However, all these approaches have been pursued by laser ablation in air. For highly contaminated surface, laser ablation in air can easily cause secondary contamination. Thus it is not suitable to apply to achieve surface decontamination for DOE facilities since many of these facilities have radioactive contaminants on the surface. Any… more

PROGRESS RELATING TO CIVILIAN APPLICATIONS DURING MARCH 1959

Description: S>In the program on the use of radioisotopes for quslity control in the cement industry, experiments were performed on the determination of Ca by EDTA titration using a radiometric endpoint, on sulfur analysis by radiometric endpoint, and on sulfur analysis by rsdiometric titration with Ba/sup 140/ ae BaCl/sub 2/. Work on the survey and evaluation of various industrial processes which might utilize intrinsic radioisotopes in process control was completed. A study of the solidification of U cast… more

Measurement of Local Frequencies of Filter Regeneration and their Effect on Successive Operating Cycles

Description: Stable operation, characterized by a succession of uniform filtration cycles with acceptable duration and pressure increase, remains a key issue in high temperature gas filtration. Ceramic filters are known to sometimes become instable. This is somehow related to ''patchy cleaning'', but cause-and-effect relationships have been difficult to identify. The objective of this contribution is to investigate incomplete regeneration patterns in detail, to try to classify them, and to identify relation… more

Ceramic Hot Gas Filter with Integrated Failsafe System

Description: In order to integrate a failsafe system and to improve the cleaning intensity a new cleaning method was recently developed, the CPP (coupled pressure pulse) cleaning (Heidenreich et al. 2001). For the CPP method the cleaning system is directly coupled with the filter candles. One feature of this new technique is that the cleaning gas pressure exceeds the system pressure only by 0.05 to 0.1 MPa, whereas in case of conventional jet pulse systems two times the system pressure (at least 0.6 MPa) is… more

Catalysis of Reduction and Oxidation Reactions for Application in Gas Particle Filters

Description: The present study is a first part of an investigation addressing the simultaneous occurrence of oxidation and reduction reactions in catalytic filters. It has the objectives (a) to assess the state of knowledge regarding suitable (types of) catalysts for reduction and oxidation, (b) to collect and analyze published information about reaction rates of both NOx reduction and VOC oxidation, and (c) to adjust a lab-scale screening method to the requirements of an activity test with various oxidatio… more

Atmospheric-Pressure Plasma Cleaning of Contaminated Surfaces

Description: Project was to develop a low-cost, environmentally benign technology for the decontamination and decommissioning of transuranic waste. With the invention of the atmospheric-pressure plasma jet the goal was achieved. This device selectively etches heavy metals from surfaces, rendering objects radiation free and suitable for decommissioning. The volatile reaction products are captured on filters, which yields a tremendous reduction in the volume of the waste. Studies on tantalum, a surrogate mate… more

Ultrasonic Cleaning of Fuel Elements Components

Description: Ultrasonic cleaning uses high-frequency sound waves to induce cavitation within a cleaning, medium. During cavitation, millions of small bubbles form and collapse, resulting in agitation proportional to the energy put into the solution. The making and breaking of these bubbles produce the scrubbing action associated with ultrasonic cleaning.

Further development of the cleanable steel HEPA filter, cost/benefit analysis, and comparison with competing technologies

Description: We have made further progress in developing a cleanable steel fiber HEPA filter. We fabricated a pleated cylindrical cartridge using commercially available steel fiber media that is made with 1 {mu}m stainless steel fibers and sintered into a sheet form. Test results at the Department of Energy (DOE) Filter Test Station at Oak Ridge show the prototype filter cartridge has 99.99% efficiency for 0.3 {mu}m dioctyl phthalate (DOP) aerosols and a pressure drop of 1.5 inches. Filter loading and clean… more
