Stress corrosion cracking of uranium--niobium alloys

Description: The stress corrosion cracking behavior of U-2/sup 1///sub 4/, 4/sup 1///sub 2/, 6 and 8 wt % Nb alloys was evaluated in laboratory air and in aqueous Cl/sup -/ solutions. Thresholds for crack propagation were obtained in these environments. The data showed that Cl/sup -/ solutions are more deleterious than air environments. Assessment of the risk of transporting liquid chlorine by rail

Description: This report presents the risk of shipping liquid chlorine by rail. While chlorine is not an energy material, there are several benefits to studying chlorine transportation risks. First, chlorine, like energy materials, is widely used as a feedstock to industry. Corrosion problems in Ti/KC1O/sub 4/ loaded devices when subjected to humid environments

Description: A piston motor/igniter loaded with a Ti/KClO/sub 4/ pyrotechnic and sealed with a silicone adhesive exhibited serious corrosion problems during aging. Five 24-hour thermal cycles between room temperature and 71/sup 0/C at 90% relative humidity resulted in extensive surface corrosion of the Kovar pins and severe stress corrosion cracking of the Kovar pins in the vicinity of the bridgewire weld. Determination of light elements in amalgam restorations. [Dental amalgam]

Description: Rutherford backscattering has been used to measure the major elemental compositions in the near-surface regions of freshly prepared and used samples of dental amalgam. Comparison of phosgene, chlorine, and hydrogen chloride as reagents for converting molten CaO. CaCl/sub 2/ to CaCl/sub 2/

Description: One method at Los Alamos for preparing impure plutonium metal from the impure oxide is by batch reduction with calcium metal at 850/sup 0/C in a CaCl/sub 2/ solvent. The solvent salt from this reduction is currently discarded as low-level radioactivity waste only because it is saturated with the CaO byproduct. Description: Experiments have been initiated which are designed to measure the time release characteristics of stable ion implanted species from selected refractory target materials which are potential candidates for forming radioactive beans at the proposed Oak Ridge Exotic Beam Facility. Description: Research progress is reported in three areas. The first area concerns the chromatography of copper organic complexes. This work is a continuation of study from previous contract years. Investigation of hydrogen and chlorine at the SiO/sub 2//Si interface

Description: Silicon oxides thermally grown in H/sub 2/O, O/sub 2/, HCl/O/sub 2/ and Cl/sub 2//O/sub 2/ ambients were analyzed, via /sup 1/H(/sup 19/F,..cap alpha gamma..)/sup 16/O nuclear reaction and SIMS, for the presence of hydrogen. In addition, those oxides grown in HCl/O/sub 2/ and Cl/sub 2//O/sub 2/ ambients were analyzed with SIMS for the presence of chlorine. Description: Caustic half cells are described and data reported for tests run to evaluate the technology involved in the operation of air cathodes for the Caustic-Chlorine Industry.
