The Chlorination of TO₃

Description: Abstract: The applicability of specific mixtures and organic chlorocarbons in general toward the chlorination of TO₃ has been tested by means of reactions is sealed glass tubes. The results show that thionyl chloride mixed with tetrachloroethylene or a bromothane of the tyoe CHBrC12 will produce TCI4 directly. This same result is produced by CBr2C12 alone.

The Determination of Organic-Bound Chlorine Levels in Municipal Wastewaters After Treatment with Heavy Chlorine Doses

Description: The development of an analytical method for the determination of total organic-bound chlorine (TOCl) produced during the chlorination of municipal wastewater effluents is presented. Sewage effluent from the Denton, Texas municipal treatment plant was chlorinated at high chlorine doses (1000 - 4000 ppm), as well as typical treatment levels. Chlororganics present in the wastewater, before and after chlorination, were concentrated by adsorption on Amberlite XAD-2 macroreticular resin, followed by … more

Progress Report - Project 31: Vapor Phase Chlorination of TO₃

Description: "This work is a continuation of an investigation begun in January, 1945, on a laboratory study of various methods for the chlorination of TO3. The work carried out this month deals entirely with gas phase chlorination, the liquid phase chlorination of TO3 having been turned over to Miss Hubbard. Gas phase chlorination of TO3 by means of CCl4, S2Cl2, SOCl2, SO2Cl2, and Cl2 have been carried out under varying conditions in the several different types of reactors."

Separation of Tuballoy From Tantalum by Chlorination Distillation Process

Description: Abstract: Tuballoy can be effectively separated from tantalum filaments by chlorination of the filaments and subsequent distillation and condensation of tantalum chloride. Apparatus for chlorination of filaments and distillation separation in one unit is under consideration. Chemical methods of separation of tuballoy from distillation residues are being tested.

TO₃ Reduction and Chlorination in the Experimental Glass Fluidizer

Description: Abstract: "Temperatures above 400 C are required before reduction will take place with AH3. Above 500 C, a pyrophoric product was obtained. The chlorination temperature should be about 350 C initially and above 450 C at the end of the reaction to achieve 99% chlorination."

AN OXYHYDROCHLORINATION PROCESS FOR PREPARING URANIUM-MOLYBDENUM REACTOR FUELS FOR SOLVENT EXTRACTION: LABORATORY DEVELOPMENT

Description: A flowsheet, based on laboratory-scale data, is presented for oxyhydrochlorination of 90% uranium --10% molyhdenum alloy with 15% HCl in air at 4OO deg C in 18 hr. Up to 90% of the molybdenum is volatilized during oxyhydrochlorination and another 3 to 6% is removed by a 2-hr treatment with pure hydrogen chloride at 400 deg C. Residual chloride is removed by a 4-hr treatment with moist air at 400 deg C, and the product uranium oxide is dissolved in 4M nitric acid to yield a stable solvent extrac… more

GC/MS Analysis of Chlorinated Organic Compounds in Municipal Wastewater After Chlorination

Description: A study has been conducted for the qualitative and Quantitative analysis of chlorinated organic compounds in water. The study included the adaptation of Amberlite XAD macroreticular resin techniques for the concentration of municipal wastewater samples, followed by GC/MS analysis. A new analytical method was developed for the determination of volatile halogenated organics using liquid-liquid extraction and electron capture gas chromatography. And, a computer program was written which searches r… more

Recovery of Uranium From Beta Salvage Residues by Vapor Phase Chlorination With CCl₄

Description: Abstract: A simple process to recover the bulk of the uranium from ignited beta salvage residues was sought. In preliminary experiments a vapor phase chlorination with CCl₄ for about four hours followed by water and nitric acid leaching was found adequate. Recoveries are estimated at 60 to 90% of the total uranium content.

A PRIORI PREDICTIVE METHODS OF ASSESSING HEALTH EFFECTS OF CHEICALS IN THE ENVIRONMENT

Description: Passage of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) last year emphasized the urgent need for the formulation of viable criteria and interim standards limiting the exposure of increasingly large segments of the U.S. population to environmental chemical toxicants. Unfortunately, current methods of developing these standards are both time-consuming and costly. The resulting need for a priori predictive techniques to assess the inherent potential of chemicals, such as the halocarbons found in chlori… more

Oxidation Behavior and Chlorination Treatment to Improve Oxidation Resistance of Nb-Mo-Si-B Alloys

Description: This thesis is written in an alternate format. The thesis is composed of a general introduction, two original manuscripts, and a general conclusion. References cited within each chapter are given at the end of each chapter. The general introduction starts with the driving force behind this research, and gives an overview of previous work on boron doped molybdenum silicides, Nb/Nb{sub 5}Si{sub 3} composites, boron modified niobium silicides and molybdenum niobium silicides. Chapter 2 focuses on … more

The Chlorination of Amino Acid in Municipal Waste Effluents

Description: In model reaction systems to test amino acids in chlorinated waste effluents, several amino acids were chlorinated at high chlorine doses. (2000-4000 mg/1). Amino acids present in municipal waste effluents before and after chlorination were concentrated and purified using cation exchange and Chelex resins. After concentration and cleanup of the samples, the amino acids were derivatized by esterification of the acid functional groups and acylation of the amine groups. Identification and quantifi… more

ANFOL synthesis. [Quarterly report], April--June 1971

Description: A new method was developed for chlorination of 4,4-dinitropimelic acid with PCl{sub 5} using a Soxhlet extraction apparatus as the addition vessel. Acid used was that reclaimed from the purification of the crude acid chloride of 4,4-dinitropimelic acid supplied by LRL. Synthesis of FEFO plasticized AFNOL has been scaled up to a nominal 30-pound batch. Small batches and cure tests were run prior to the scaleup. Cure rate of the AFNOL system was followed by infrared spectrophotometry. The tempera… more
