Radiation protection: an analysis of thyroid blocking. [Effectiveness of KI in reducing radioactive uptake following potential reactor accident]

Description: An analysis was performed to provide guidance to policymakers concerning the effectiveness of potassium iodide (KI) as a thyroid blocking agent in potential reactor accident situations, the distance to which (or area within which) it should be distributed, and its relative effectiveness compared to other available protective measures. The analysis was performed using the Reactor Safety Study (WASH-1400) consequence model. Four categories of accidents were addressed: gap activity release acciden… more

Evaluation of the distribution of absorbed dose in child phantoms exposed to diagnostic medical x rays

Description: The purpose of this study was to determine, by theoretical calculation and experimental measurement, the absorbed dose distributions in two heterogeneous phantoms representing one-year- and five-year-old children from typical radiographic examinations for those ages. Theoretical work included the modification of an existing internal dose code which uses Monte Carlo methods to determine doses within the Snyder-Fisher mathematical phantom. A Ge(Li) detector and a pinhole collimator were used to m… more

Evaluation of models for assessing compliance with environmental radiation regulations

Description: The use of environmental transport and dosimetry models to predict the consequences of radionuclide releases from nuclear facilities is discussed. It is pointed out that many input parameters, and hence the predictions, of these models have a high degree of variability. The determination of the uncertainties of the predictions of these models is essential for assessing the adequacy of their use to ensure compliance with radiation protection standards. Estimation of the depletion of an airborne … more
