Preliminary investigation of water coagulation characteristics as affects reactor effluent radionuclides

Description: Several theories have been advanced regarding the structure and characteristics of the aluminum hydroxide molecule when produced from alum in the water treatment process. The Water Treatment Task Force initiated this test to exploit a theory that increased adsorption of soil-leached elements, present in Columbia River water, by the floc particle would occur when the precipitate vas formed in its terminal pH state. This report discusses a half-plant test which was initiated at E Reactor Plant wh… more

Interim report II: Production test IP-634, half-plant low pH test water treatment at D Reactor process tube examination results

Description: Two half-plant tests were conducted at D reactor to evaluate the effect of process water pH on corrosion of aluminum process tubes and fuel elements. The first test demonstrated that a reduction in coolant pH from 7.0 to 6.6 reduced aluminum corrosion by a factor of between 2 and 3. Fuel weight loss data from the second test indicated that reducing coolant pH from 6.6 to 6.2 would result in an additional factor of 2 to 3 reduction in aluminum corrosion. This report presents the results of ex-re… more

Thorium processing nuclear safety review

Description: A review of the nuclear safety aspects of a proposal to process about 150 to 250 tons of thorium containing about one kilogram U-233 per ton has been made. The review was made at the request of the Chemical Processing Department in whose Purex plant the thorium processing will be carried out. The review group finds that the proposed operation can be conducted with no more risk of criticality than attends the standard plutonium processing in Purex, provided the safeguards planned by the Departme… more

Production Test IP-728 half-plant sodium silicate test: Interim report 1

Description: The radionuclides in reactor effluent are produced almost exclusively from the irradiation of patent elements which are adsorbed on the film which forms on the in-reactor surfaces. The nuclides are subsequently desorbed into the effluent water, one of the areas of activity in the research and development program directed toward reducing reactor effluent radioactivity has been to find some means of minimizing the adsorption of parent materials and/or desorption of radioisotopes. In the course of… more

Reactor effluent analytical data: October--December 1964

Description: This report continues the tabulation of reactor effluent data for record purposes. During this report period, al reactor coolant had sodium dichromate added to a concentration of 1.0 ppm. coolant for both of the K Reactors was treated with liquid alum at a rate of about 12 ppm. Bauxite was used at all other reactors to provide a nominal alum concentration of 18 ppm during treatment. The coolant pH at DR, F, KE, and KW was reduced from 7.0 to 6.6 on October 23, October 29, December 5, and Decemb… more

Production Test IP-745: Half-plant validity test, Final report

Description: Half-plant production tests have been used for many years to evaluate changes in water treatment processes. Since some conjecture existed regarding the validity of this test concept, it was decided to employ a tracer element. Bromine was chosen as the tracer element due to its absence in raw water, the short half life of its radionuclides, and its compatibility as a potable water treatment chemical. The parent production test was run for four days, but the scatter in the data indicated equilibr… more

A TOTAL BURN SPECTROGRAPHIC DETERMINATION OF SILICON IN PLUTONIUM

Description: A total burn-spectrographic method has been applied to the determination of trace concentrations of silicon in plutonium. The sample is oxidized to plutonium dioxide, mixed with a germanium dioxide-graphite mixture containing tin internal standard, packed into cupped graphite electrodes, and burned to completion in a high amperage direct current arc. Plutonium spectral interference is minimized by optical means and by use of a less intense silicon line. The sensitivity is thereby decreased but … more

Conceptual engineering design and economic evaluation of the burn-acid- leach aqueous process and of the burn-fluoride-volatility process for recovering spent Rover fuel at the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant

Description: Declassified 24 Sep 1973. Two detailed, conceptual process, equipment, and plant designs were prepared for facilities for recovering spent Rover fuel (highly enriched uranium-graphite) at the Idaho Chemical Processing Plart. The results of the study indicate that the fluoridevolatility process is preferred on both economic and technical grounds. Both processes employ a comnion fuel shipping, storage, and charging system and use continuous, fluidized-bed oxidation of the fuel as the first step o… more

Compatibility Studies of Anion Exchange Resins. Part I. The Compatibility of Dowex 1 X 4 Nitrate Form Anion Resin With Nitric Acid and Oxides of Nitrogen

Description: The compatibility of Dowex 1x4 nitrate form anion resin with nitric acid, and the compatibility of several types of plastic tubing with nitric acid were investigated. Ignition properties of resin extract, treated resin and mixtures of tubing extract with either resin extract or treated resin were also investigated.
