A Review of the Utilization of Fission Fragment Energy for the Fixation of Nitrogen

Description: Report issued by the Brookhaven National Laboratory discussing methods of nitrogen fixation, and their economic impacts. As stated in the introduction, "studies are described on circulating dust fuels, as well as fixed plated, porous bed, and other types of fuels as the basis for chemo-nuclear reactor designs, and the various fuel systems are compared on a technical and economic basis" (p. 3). This report includes tables, and illustrations.

Agriculture Biotechnology: Background and Recent Issues

Description: This report discusses issues regarding the impacts of GE crops on the environment and food safety, and whether GE foods should be specially labeled. Underlying these issues is the question of whether U.S. regulation and oversight of biotechnology—with responsibilities spread primarily among the U.S.

Statistical methods for environmental pollution monitoring

Description: The application of statistics to environmental pollution monitoring studies requires a knowledge of statistical analysis methods particularly well suited to pollution data. This book fills that need by providing sampling plans, statistical tests, parameter estimation procedure techniques, and references to pertinent publications. Most of the statistical techniques are relatively simple, and examples, exercises, and case studies are provided to illustrate procedures. The book is logically divided into three parts. Chapters 1, 2, and 3 are introductory chapters. Chapters 4 through 10 discuss field sampling designs and Chapters 11 through 18 deal with a broad range of statistical analysis procedures. Some statistical techniques given here are not commonly seen in statistics book. For example, see methods for handling correlated data (Sections 4.5 and 11.12), for detecting hot spots (Chapter 10), and for estimating a confidence interval for the mean of a lognormal distribution (Section 13.2). Also, Appendix B lists a computer code that estimates and tests for trends over time at one or more monitoring stations using nonparametric methods (Chapters 16 and 17). Unfortunately, some important topics could not be included because of their complexity and the need to limit the length of the book. For example, only brief mention could be made of time series analysis using Box-Jenkins methods and of kriging techniques for estimating spatial and spatial-time patterns of pollution, although multiple references on these topics are provided. Also, no discussion of methods for assessing risks from environmental pollution could be included.

Bisphenol A (BPA) in Plastics and Possible Human Health Effects

Description: Bisphenol A (BPA) is used to produce certain types of plastic. Containers made of these plastics may expose people to small amounts of BPA in food and water. Some animal experiments have found that fetal and infant development may be harmed by small amounts of BPA, but scientists disagree about the value of the animal studies for predicting harmful effects in people. This report discusses this issue and relevant legislation, as well as inquiries into studies currently underway to determine the true harm inherent in BPA and the degree to which people are regularly exposed to BPA.

MATHEMATICS OF INTERMITTENT IRRADIATION

Description: Initiation of reactions by intermittent irradiation is frequently encountered in physical, chemical, and biological systems. Mathematicai expressions for transient and steady state concentrations of reactive species in these systems are useful for predicting performance and for research purposes. A general method of formulation of the intermittent irradiation problem is presented herein, and illustrative solutions are obtained for radioactive decay chains and for the rotating sector method. 20 references.
