Physical properties of halthane series adhesives, part 2 of 2. Period covered: October--December 1976. [Urethanes: tensile adhesion; bulk viscosity; hardness]

Description: The Halthane series of urethane adhesives have sufficient adhesive strengths and cure times for most assembly processes at Pantex. The efficiency of preparation and handling of the three systems are nearly equal. Physical properties are more consistent between samples for the 87-1. The 73-18 system is ranked in the middle and 73-14 as the least consistent. The 87-1 system is high in viscosity and adhesive bond strength. The low viscosity of 73-18 and 73-14 allows more consistency in bond thickn… more

Assessment of the theory and hypotheses of the acidification of watersheds

Description: This report documents and critically assesses the evolution and status of the scientific understanding of the effects of acidic deposition on surface waters. The main conclusion is that the dominant theory of surface-water acidification fails to adequately incorporate many important factors and processes that influence surface water acidity. Some of these factors and processes are not well researched or recognized as being important by most scientists in the aquatic effects research area. 258 r… more

Physicochemical Studies of the Carbamate-CO/sub 2/-Solvent System

Description: The formation of carbamate from CO/sub 2/ and the various amine solutions has been investigated for the purpose of elucidating the structure of the species generated in the reaction. The amine solutions used were 1 and 2 molar solutions of di-n-butylamine (DNBA) in triethylamine (TEA), pure DNBA and pure TEA. It has been found that the nonaqueous solvent participates in the formation of carbamate in 1 and 2M-DNBA/TEA solutions as a proton acceptor in DNBA-carbamate formation. However, due to th… more

Corrosion testing of urea-formaldehyde foam insulating material

Description: Two tests of the corrosiveness of urea-formaldehyde (UF) foam insulating materials were compared. One test, the Timm test, had test coupons foamed in place. In the second, the Canadian test, blocks of foam already set were placed in contact with test coupons. The Timm test uses 10 gage thick coupons, while the Canadian test specifies 3 mil thick ones. Two samples of UF foam were tested by the Timm and the Canadian tests. The electrical-resistance probes showed that the corrosion rate against st… more

Improved bondability of molded rigid urethane form by plasma treatment

Description: Most mold releases, including so-called nontransferring releases, interfere with bonding of molded urethane foam. Water-washable mold releases are not readily removable from urethane foams cured at elevated temperatures. Plasma treatment in either argon or oxygen improves the bonding surfaces of molded urethane foam. Comparable bonding results can be obtained with RF (13.6 MHz), AC (20 kHz), or DC-plasma treatments. The plasma-treated foam surfaces will retain the improved bondability for a con… more

Catalytic hydrogenation of carbon monoxide

Description: This project is focused on developing strategies to accomplish the reduction and hydrogenation of carbon monoxide to produce organic oxygenates at mild conditions. Our approaches to this issue are based on the recognition that rhodium macrocycles have unusually favorable thermodynamic values for producing a series of intermediate implicated in the catalytic hydrogenation of CO. Observations of metalloformyl complexes produced by reactions of H{sub 2} and CO, and reductive coupling of CO to form… more

Recovery of anaerobic digestion after exposure to toxicants. Final report

Description: The concept that methane fermentation cannot tolerate chronic or slug doses of toxicants has almost totally precluded methane fermentation as a viable contender for the treatment of industrial wastewaters. This study assayed a wide variety of toxicants, heavy metals, inorganic salts, organic chemicals, solvents, and antibiotics which are used in industrial processes and, therefore, appear in the industrial wastewaters therefrom. Toxicity was related to the reduction in methane production of a c… more

Effect of fluoride, chloride, bromide, and thiocynate on potentiometric titrations of iron(II)-tin(II) mixtures with cerium(IV)

Description: A two-step curve is expected in the potentiometric titration of Fe(II)-Sn(II) mixtures with Ce(IV) in H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/. Each end point should indicate the respective oxidation of Sn(II) and Fe(II). However, experimentally only one end point was found; it corresponded to the total oxidation of Sn(II) and Fe(II). When this oxidation-reduction reaction was carried out in the presence of Cl/sup -/, the theoretical behavior was observed. The present study was done to ascertain if monovalent anions … more

Integrated dry NO sub x /SO sub 2 emissions control system

Description: This project's goal is to demonstrate the removal up to 70% of the NO{sub x} and 70% of the SO{sub 2} emissions from coal fired utility boilers. It will establish an alternative emissions control technology integrating a combination of several processes, while minimizing capital expenditures and limiting waste production to dry solids that are handled with conventional ash removal equipment. These processes include low-NO{sub x} burners, NO{sub x} ports and urea injection for NO{sub x} control,… more

State-of-the-art report on low-level radioactive waste treatment

Description: An attempt is made to identify the main sources of low-level radioactive wastes that are generated in the United States. To place the waste problem in perspective, rough estimates are given of the annual amounts of each generic type of waste that is generated. Most of the wet solid wastes arise from the cleanup of gaseous and liquid radioactive streams prior to discharge or recycle. The treatment of the process streams and the secondary wet solid wastes thus generated is described for each type… more

Transition metal activation and functionalization of carbon-hydrogen bonds

Description: We are investigating the fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic factors that influence carbon-hydrogen bond activation at homogeneous transition metal centers and the conversion of hydrocarbons into functionalized products of potential use to the chemical industry. Advances have been made in both understanding the interactions of hydrocarbons with metals and in the functionalization of hydrocarbons. We have found that RhCl(PR{sub 3}){sub 2}(CNR) complexes can catalyze the insertion of isonitrile… more

Stress relaxation of cellular silicone material

Description: Stress relaxation information for cellular silicone materials formed with urea leachable filler is being gathered. Two types of polymers are used in the test: equilibrium type (random copolymer) and condensation type (block copolymer). Each of these was compounded to provide finished materials with nominal apparent densities of 0.34 and 0.52 g/cm/sup 3/. Three sample variations of 1.17, 1.52, and 2.54 mm nominal thickness were prepared from the lower density product, and two sample variations h… more

Reduction of carbon monoxide. Past research summary

Description: Research programs for the year on the preparation, characterization, and reactions of binuclear tantalum complexes are described. All evidence to date suggest the following of these dimeric molecules: (1) the dimer does not break into monomers under mild conditions; (2) intermolecular hydride exchange is not negligible, but it is slow; (3) intermolecular non-ionic halide exchange is fast; (4) the ends of the dimers can rotate partially with respect to one another. The binuclear tantalum hydride… more
