Description: The metabolism and toxicity of 3-methylfuran (3-MF) are described. The major product of metabolic activation of 3-MF appears to be disemicarbazones. Cursory description of toxic effects of 3-MF on lung and kidneys are provided. 18 refs.

Physical properties of halthane series adhesives, part 2 of 2. Period covered: October--December 1976. [Urethanes: tensile adhesion; bulk viscosity; hardness]

Description: The Halthane series of urethane adhesives have sufficient adhesive strengths and cure times for most assembly processes at Pantex. The efficiency of preparation and handling of the three systems are nearly equal. Physical properties are more consistent between samples for the 87-1. The 73-18 system is ranked in the middle and 73-14 as the least consistent. The 87-1 system is high in viscosity and adhesive bond strength. Corrosion testing of urea-formaldehyde foam insulating material

Description: Two tests of the corrosiveness of urea-formaldehyde (UF) foam insulating materials were compared. One test, the Timm test, had test coupons foamed in place. In the second, the Canadian test, blocks of foam already set were placed in contact with test coupons. The Timm test uses 10 gage thick coupons, while the Canadian test specifies 3 mil thick ones. Improved bondability of molded rigid urethane form by plasma treatment

Description: Most mold releases, including so-called nontransferring releases, interfere with bonding of molded urethane foam. Water-washable mold releases are not readily removable from urethane foams cured at elevated temperatures. Plasma treatment in either argon or oxygen improves the bonding surfaces of molded urethane foam. Comparable bonding results can be obtained with RF (13.6 MHz), AC (20 kHz), or DC-plasma treatments. Comparison of phosgene, chlorine, and hydrogen chloride as reagents for converting molten CaO. CaCl/sub 2/ to CaCl/sub 2/

Description: One method at Los Alamos for preparing impure plutonium metal from the impure oxide is by batch reduction with calcium metal at 850/sup 0/C in a CaCl/sub 2/ solvent. The solvent salt from this reduction is currently discarded as low-level radioactivity waste only because it is saturated with the CaO byproduct. Effect of fluoride, chloride, bromide, and thiocynate on potentiometric titrations of iron(II)-tin(II) mixtures with cerium(IV)

Description: A two-step curve is expected in the potentiometric titration of Fe(II)-Sn(II) mixtures with Ce(IV) in H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/.
