Energy Program annual report

Description: The national economy is particularly dependent on efficient electrical generation and transportation. Electrical demand continues to grow and will increasingly rely on coal and nuclear fuels. The nuclear power industry still has not found a solution to the problem of disposing of the waste produced by nuclear reactors. Although coal is in ample supply and the infrastructure is in place for its utilization, environmental problems and improved conversion processes remain technical challenges. In … more

Effects of atmospheric variability on energy utilization and conservation. Final report, 1 November 1976--31 October 1977

Description: A space-heating energy-consumption model for Greeley, Colorado for the winter of 1976-77 was within 98.9 percent of actual natural gas consumption for that city. Modeling of Cheyenne, Wyoming, including the testing of a new statistical scheme to develop the building census required by the energy consumption model, has progressed to the point where reliable natural gas consumption estimates can be made with the model for that community. A detailed study of temperature and surface wind patterns i… more

Natural repository analogue program. Progress report, July 1-September 30, 1981

Description: A report on the immobilization of uranium in the earth's crust has been completed. Techniques have been developed to do a comprehensive mass inventory of the Oklo reactor zones. These techniques were applied to a compilation of data from Oklo zones 2 and 3-4. The study shows large deficiencies of neodymium, ruthenium, and mass 99 elements (/sup 99/Tc or /sup 99/Ru) in the reactor zones. The extent of these deficiencies are correlated with the intensity of the nuclear reactions. Analyses of ores… more

Effect of market structure on international coal trade

Description: This paper is concerned with the determinants of international steam-coal trade. Most work in projecting coal trade has been either qualitative (a consensus of experts) or, if quantitative, has been based on competitive spatial-equilibrium models. Unfortunately, the competitive model of trade does not appear to account for observed and anticipated trade flows. This is consistent with findings in the commodity trade literature that, although markets may behave in a rational economic fashion, mar… more

Depositional and diagenetic history of the Edgecliff reefs (Middle Devonian Onodaga Formation of New York and Ontario)

Description: The study of the depositional history of the Edgecliff reefs is complete. Major results include: the identification of the Edgecliff and its reefs as the product of carbonate deposition in a temperate water environment, modes of reef growth, description of the nature of pinnacle reefs, and the basinal dynamics and distribution of pinnacle reefs. A trend was found of increasing number and size of stromatoporoids westwards from the vicinity of Albany, NY (where they are rare and small) to Hagarsv… more

Description: Phase IA of this project consisted of developing and testing the Sonic Mapping and Caliper (SMAC) Tool in both an oil and a geothermal well. The first field test of the SMAC was successfully run in an oil well located in Edmonton, Canada. The well had an inner diameter (I.D.) of seven inches and was cased to 3300 feet. An additional 120 feet of the well was open hole. The log from this test recorded each collar location, the casing conditions, and the fracture zone in the open hole. In the cour… more
