State Measurement Laboratories

Description: Abstract: The National Bureau of Standards receives repeated requests from industry and Federal agencies (e.g. , Department of Defense, Nuclear Regulatory Commission) for information about the capabilities of and services provided by State measurement laboratories. This directory is a compilation of such information by State, including a description of the services available and fees charged. The directory will be updated annually in January of each year to coincide with the issuance of annual … more

AC-DC Difference Calibrations

Description: Abstract: This publication collects and summarizes the specialized information needed to operate the ac-dc difference laboratory and calibration service at NIST (Gaithersburg). It also serves as a convenient reference source for the users of this calibration service and other interested people by documenting the service and its underlying background in considerable detail. It contains the following: an annotated table of contents, a topical index, and a glossary of common ac-dc acronyms; an ove… more

Precision Measurement and Calibration: Electricity: Selected Papers on the Realization and Maintenance of the Fundamental Electrical Units and Related Topics

Description: Abstract: Selected publications of the National Bureau of Standards technical staff in the field of electricity were first compiled in 1962 as a volume of the NBS Precision Measurement and Calibration Series (Electricity and Electronics, Handbook 77, Volume I); this compilation was extended in 1968 by the compilation of an additional volume in the Precision Measurement and Calibration Series (Electricity-Low Frequency, NBS Special Publication 300, Volume 3). The present volume, a further extens… more

Mass Calibrations

Description: Abstract: The NIST calibration service for standard masses is described. Weights which are accepted for calibration range in nominal values from 1 mg to 13,600 kg (30,000 pounds). We also accept weights used to generate standard pressures in piston gages. Cleaning procedures used on weights prior to calibration are described. The measurement algorithms (including density determinations of single-piece kilogram weights) and the uncertainties assigned to calibrated weights are discussed. We also … more

Test definitions for the evaluation of infrasound sensors.

Description: Most test methodologies referenced in this Test Definition and Test Procedures were designed by Sandia specifically for geophysical instrumentation evaluation. When appropriate, test instrumentation calibration is traceable to the National Institute for Standards Technology (NIST). The objectives are to evaluate the overall technical performance of the infrasound sensor. The results of these evaluations can be compared to the manufacturer's specifications and any relevant application requiremen… more

Quantification of uncertainty in machining operations for on-machine acceptance.

Description: Manufactured parts are designed with acceptance tolerances, i.e. deviations from ideal design conditions, due to unavoidable errors in the manufacturing process. It is necessary to measure and evaluate the manufactured part, compared to the nominal design, to determine whether the part meets design specifications. The scope of this research project is dimensional acceptance of machined parts; specifically, parts machined using numerically controlled (NC, or also CNC for Computer Numerically Con… more

Exploration of new multivariate spectral calibration algorithms.

Description: A variety of multivariate calibration algorithms for quantitative spectral analyses were investigated and compared, and new algorithms were developed in the course of this Laboratory Directed Research and Development project. We were able to demonstrate the ability of the hybrid classical least squares/partial least squares (CLSIPLS) calibration algorithms to maintain calibrations in the presence of spectrometer drift and to transfer calibrations between spectrometers from the same or different… more
