Comparison of Methodologies for Assessing the Risks From Nuclear Weapons and From Nuclear Reactors

Description: There are important differences between the safety principles for nuclear weapons and for nuclear reactors. For example, a principal concern for nuclear weapons is to prevent electrical energy from reaching the nuclear package during accidents produced by crashes, fires, and other hazards, whereas the foremost concern for nuclear reactors is to maintain coolant around the core in the event of certain system failures. Not surprisingly, new methods have had to be developed to assess the risk from… more

An experimental evaluation of the instrumented flux synthesis method for the real-time estimation of reactivity. Final report

Description: One method of determining the flux density is flux synthesis which approximates the flux in the core by linear combinations of precomputed shape functions. In traditional flux synthesis, the unknown mixing coefficients are determined using a weighted residual method of solving the diffusion equation. In the instrumented synthesis method, the mixing coefficients are determined using count rates from neutron detectors in the core. In this way the mixing coefficients are linked to conditions in th… more

Unitarity-based techniques for one-loop calculations in QCD

Description: Perturbative QCD, and jet physics in particular, have matured sufficiently that rather than being merely subjects of experimental studies, they are now tools in the search for new physics. This role can be seen in the search for the top quark, as well as in recent speculations about the implications of supposed high-E{sub T} deviations of the inclusive-jet differential cross section at the Tevatron. One of the important challenges to both theorists and experimenters in coming years will be to h… more

A quantum mechanical investigation of positively charged defects in SiO{sub 2} thin film devices

Description: Ab initio Hartree-Fock and second-order Moeller-Plesset theory calculations have been performed to investigate the stability of triply-coordinated O{sup +} centers in the Si-O-Si network of amorphous SiO{sub 2}. The calculations reveal that the H{sup +} ion binds with a bridging O center to form a very stable (D{sub e} > 6 eV) trivalent O complex. Capture of an electron by the positively charged protonated complex, however, is predicted to immediately lead to the dissociation of the O-H bond. A… more

Phase diagram of imperfect ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic-bilayers

Description: The phase diagram for ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic bilayers with imperfect interfaces is calculated, using a Ising spin-1/2 model which is solved numerically in the mean field approximation for finite temperatures. We identify 3 stable phases: domains in the ferromagnet, domains in the antiferromagnet, and domain walls near the interfaces with homogeneous order within the layers. Phase transitions between these phases occur as a function of temperature, relative film thicknesses, and step de… more

Electronic structure and phase equilibria in ternary substitutional alloys

Description: A reliable, consistent scheme to study phase equilibria in ternary substitutional alloys based on the tight-binding approximation is presented. With electronic parameters from linear muffin-tin orbital calculations, the computed density of states and band structures compare well with those from more accurate {ital ab}{ital initio} calculations. Disordered alloys are studied within the tight-binding coherent-potential approximation extended to alloys; energetics of ordered systems are obtained t… more

Application of Simple Numerical Techniques for Increasing the Efficiency of a Forward-In-Time Shallow Water Code on a Sphere

Description: Atmospheric motions contain signals such as gravity waves and/or sound waves which usually have little influence on the actual weather. These signals do however have an effect on atmospheric models which predict the weather; the signals require the use of small time steps for numerical stability. Two explicit numerical techniques, time-splitting and temporal averaging, are described in this paper which help increase the efficiency of atmospheric models which contain fast signals. An interesting… more

A Spectral Function Method Applied to the Calculation of the Wake Function for the NLCTA

Description: The equivalent circuit representation of the dipole modes of the SLAC damped detuned structure (DDS) which is being fabricated at LAC has been analyzed by three different methods. The first two are based upon a modal analysis: in the first, damped modes are found by a first order perturbation in the cell to damping manifold coupling strength; while in the second, preferred when the coupling strength is large (as is the case for the SLAC structure) they are determined exactly (a time consuming p… more

Using BRDFs for accurate albedo calculations and adjacency effect corrections

Description: In this paper the authors discuss two uses of BRDFs in remote sensing: (1) in determining the clear sky top of the atmosphere (TOA) albedo, (2) in quantifying the effect of the BRDF on the adjacency point-spread function and on atmospheric corrections. The TOA spectral albedo is an important parameter retrieved by the Multi-angle Imaging Spectro-Radiometer (MISR). Its accuracy depends mainly on how well one can model the surface BRDF for many different situations. The authors present results fr… more

Analytical expressions for maximum wind turbine average power in a Rayleigh wind regime

Description: Average or expectation values for annual power of a wind turbine in a Rayleigh wind regime are calculated and plotted as a function of cut-out wind speed. This wind speed is expressed in multiples of the annual average wind speed at the turbine installation site. To provide a common basis for comparison of all real and imagined turbines, the Rayleigh-Betz wind machine is postulated. This machine is an ideal wind machine operating with the ideal Betz power coefficient of 0.593 in a Rayleigh prob… more
